Justin, I so agree with you.

There are these traveling preachers who come to my campus every year at the same time.
They stand up on the main part of campus and yell at all the students telling us that we are all going to hell because of things like listening to rock-and-roll and "gangster rap," watching movies, being "whore-mongers", basically for doing anything... and people who know that I am a Christian ask me if I support them, because everyone who claims to love the Lord gets painted with the same brush (as Rob Bell puts it) after seeing these outspoken preachers on the green..
Like you said, the 'life-giving Christians' are those who are spreading the real message of hope and love. There is an old phrase about catching more flies with honey and not vinegar. There is a lot more to say about this and I didnt mean to come on here and ramble!! Just wanted to let you know that I agree with you.

Now that I think about it, are there any statistics showing how many people come to know Jesus by being scared into it like that? I would love to see something like that if you know of anything.

I did not see any urination while I was there... the only rudeness I encountered was at Katz's deli (the one where that scene from When Harry Met Sally was filmed at, but they make a mean corned beef sandwich... There is an amazing restaurant called Penelope's and it's cheep too, it's a few blocks away from Park Ave, not sure which direction, so sorry that's not much help... and then, the best cupcakes Ive ever eaten were at Magnolia's bakery, it's open late and night and there might be a short line to get in, but it's worth it.. I don't even like cupcakes, and I loved it there.. so those were my favorite places! We felt safe every place we went, so no worries!

In my telecommunications classes about the media, we talk about this a lot (sans mention of God), and all my professors and classmates came to the conclusion that culture influences media and media influences culture almost equally. Just a side note.

I have not seen the movie, nor am I planing on seeing it, but I think that the answer to your question about God playing into all of 'this,' is in a way, answered by your quote from Martin Luther. I think I remember some past blog entries about the relevance of the Gospel, and I think that that plays a big part in everything, but as you know, there is a fine line between actually being appealing and relevant and being cheesy with 'hip' lingo and the like. I digress.
Thanks for stepping out of culture to look at it critically; I strongly believe that if more people did that, there would be a lot less 'trash' saturating media today and entertainment might become meaningful.
God Bless.
