in Warp Speed Fat Loss Day One on Healthy Simple Living
Hey Lilla,

I agree with Suzette, you've gotta have some time off every so often, to chill relax and really let the body recover. The trick is to get going again after a week or 2 off, you gotta keep going!!!

Are you still training for the half marathon?

Take care...

1.) yeah, that was definately the plan. did that seriously work?

2.) your not just now noticing that americans tend to have a floating definition of winning. (MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!)

3.) i couldnt get CBC's coverage like i did when i was growing up and NBC was trash so i didnt see much of the olympics. I despise flowerey political speeches so ill just keep watching cartoons.

4.) beautiful, intelligent, confident, no prominent features for caricture artists to make fun of over and over. Barrack better keep an eye on that one.

5.) McCain had his chance back in 2000 to win me over. pardon the expression, but i dont want no sloppy seconds after what bush did to him and the rest of us.

6.) the idealistic viewpoints that the green party bring into the national discussion are necessary (though the media doesnt seem to think so...). To expect more than that out of them or a vote out of me is expecting too much.

7.) i still despise flowery political speeches.

8.) i would be so disapointed in you if you were ever satisfied with blind allegiance. yours is to question and challenge, even the people you are proud of.

9.) i expected you to be cautiously optimistic, i mean, the dude is still a politician.

10.) tough one. im in a happy little rut here. Am i willing to give that up to see the things I have professed to work so hard toward come to be? I like to think if its something i TRULY believe in, I would.

in I Won the Turbulence Training Video Contest! on Healthy Simple Living
Congratulations Lilla.

I did not know about the TT competition but your entry for it is great. You have put together an excellent video and shown us all the power of daily photographs.

I just hope I can put together something half as good when I reach some milestones.

A fun evening indeed; thanks for hosting.

I must say that I found the video 'extras' rather distracting from the main event. Maybe if I was at home with my multiple monitor setup it would have been beeter - twitter on one screen, video on the other...

in I’m still here… and over there too on Uptown Notes
cool interview dumi,

i couldnt seem to get a comment in on Mr. Boyle's article so ill weigh down your blog again :P

anyway, what i think Mr. Boyle was terming "reperations" for tribes is actually an acknowledgement of treaty obligations. Most recognized tribal sovereign nations traded massive parcels of land in exchange for the promise of medical care and education. (or some variation) These, mostly, created massive bureaucracies that kept much of that aide from actually reaching the people. To my knowledge, no money has been placed in the hands of a tribe to apologize for past wrongs. Only by irrefutable legal documentation are the tribes able to gain funds and only through HORRIBLE bureacracy and by toeing the government line.

those communities that have reaped economic benefit from casinos and the like have not become a utopia of native prosperity... what do you think comes from well funded boredom? ever watched what an 18 year old does with $100 that he didnt have to work for? try $70,000/year.

I would be careful what you wish for. if the US Gov mailed checks to every person that was maliciously wronged during this country's history you would be looking at disaster.

Now, if you are talking reperations in the form of sweeping educational reform, scholarships, community reintegration programs (ie, send kids to college and BRING THEM BACK TO HELP THIER COMMUNITY), access to healthcare, behavioral health, anncillary care, disability and handicapped assistance, elderly assistance, business loans, economic assistance, housing etc etc etc. you might be better off. however, these programs are just as susceptible to corruption and cronieism as all the others have proven to be.

a fair and just way to distribute "reperations" to all those that diserve them would be a complex problem to solve. (tax holiday does very little to help the unemployed, under employed, disabled etc.)

I think the best thing the government could do would be to acknowledge past wrongs and the despair it has brought about for so many, and set aside grant endowments with the names of what they are trying to repay on them. a rotating board of grant reviewers choose programs and institutions with stated missions of providing some good and a proven ability to do so (maybe limit to medical, behavioral and educational?) to the target community to fund for a set number of years. No indians or whites allowed on the board deciding on who gets the grants for boarding school reperations. no blacks or whites on the board deciding who gets the grants for slavery reperations.

more random ideas on how to at least begin to address complex issues. Obama would be a fool (politically) to bring it up before he is elected, the word reperations sends some running for the hills and as you said, post election, politicians tend to shy away from contentious issues even AFTER they have won. id definately be down to join a grassroots movements to prod him if we could come to an agreement on what we need to push for.

Rain on a car window is a bit of a weather news cliche, sure, but so are some of the greatest pop songs ever (just to cite one obvious example). I don't recall ever seeing such a photo with stop signs reflected in every drop... cool shot even if you did cop the idea elsewhere, and I second the thought. We could do with a wee drought about now.

in How Raw Are You? on Healthy Simple Living
Hi Lilla

I have been eating a predominantly raw diet since starting my transformation. I think that eating this way has returned some of my health and that in turn has allowed me to lose fat.

I say 'predominantly' because I don't care much for labels and I don't think my body cares that much if I eat some chicken or noodles once in a while.

I think if my body has survived through all the awful junk food I used to feed it the occasional piece of meat or cooked food will go unnoticed. Eating raw is not a competition but a source of nutrition and health.

I have never eaten raw fish - urghh!! Perhaps it is nice, I don't know.

you get my attention when you mention health disparities. I wont get in to how infuriating this kind of misinformation is to somebody who works at a health clinic focussed on closing the gap for the Native community in Detroit. (i know, i know, "indians in Detroit!?" 40,000 self identified, in our 7 county service area). what is thier explanation for us? side effect of surviving the plagues?

anyway, the list of causes nearly mirrors what researchers are finding for the native community with one difference sticking out. surveys of clients are showing a lack of trust amongst natives of western medicine, white doctors, government funded...anything and this is causing them to, on average, to SEEK less medical care, even if it is available.

I wonder if this is unique to natives. is there a significant number of black folks who refuse to see a doctor who has no ties to the black community? we see a large number of clients who would not go anywhere else. not all of our doctors are native, but clients are willing to see any doctor at a clinic they perceive to be in touch with thier community. since we have introduced traditional and holistic aspects to the care we give, even people with health insurance, who could go to a high tech facility in the burbs, or get into the systems of one of the major hospitals are headed to SW-D to our relatively ramshackled facilities to recieve care.

I have no illusions that we are much more than a band-aid on a shotgun wound. But, as the evidence piles up, our access to funds becomes greater, as we can prove that we can provide something that other health centers cannot. Are other minority groups able to provide such evidence and perhaps field and fund smaller, community based organizations where there is a greater amount of trust and thus a greater percentage of people SEEKING the care they need?

in 227 - Repurposing my Ashtanga Yoga Book on Healthy Simple Living
Hi Lilla

I have used WordPress on a few of my blogs and love it. I fall in to the same trap as you making extra work for myself. There are always so many more things that you can add to a blog (especially WordPress).

I am envious of the flexibility you have on the photo on your blog. I have so little flexibility in my hips and hamstrings and don't really know where to start.

luckily the 'lets talk about babies' stuff quickly re-turned to more manly topics of conversation!

A great evening and super to meet up with you again. My lamb course suited the Musar perfectly by the way.

Realise you are heading to the conference (which I am really annoyed at not being able to attend despite all attempts) we should try and organise a bring-a-bottle wine tasting this autumn.

in Bad Air Days on Off Track

Skig (may I call you Skig?), first of all I'm sorry that your comments got canned as 'spam.' I fixed that. Second, you're a dope. Decompostion does not cause smog. I never said anything about the air in 1970; it would surpise me if it isn't cleaner now, given better regulations, but that doesn't change the fact that air pollution still kills people... lots of people... and it would be better for our health and our economy to seek out cleaner sources of energy. Environmental groups are shoe-sting operations compared with the multinational corporate propaganda machine, and health care and labor costs are the reason most businesses site for moving elsewhere, not environmental regulation.

I am blessed with quite a fast internet connection so this specific site loads fast. It offers me nothing however - why would I be interested in an exhibition that ended a month ago? More importantly where are the details of the wines - the composition, the posh food to accompany etc?

Flash intros I skip (they are but barriers to the content) but that doesn't mean I dislike flash. I love the animations, the little buttons that do stuff but unless it leads to the info I am looking for it is pointless just like this site!

in Bad Air Days on Off Track

It is a particularly sad and irksome fact that air pollution travels (by air, no less), so that our national parks sometimes have some of the worst air in the country. The air is often unhealthy to breathe in many places around the world, to the point where air pollution literally is killing people. It is also a fact that deniers such as Skiggley are among the reasons why it remains such a problem. Equating pollution regulations with an attack on personal liberty is simply nuts, unless you are such an anarchonihilst that you claim a right to harm others.

in 218 - wanna start a shredder+ challenge? on Healthy Simple Living
Hey Lilla,

I've been thinking about this a lot over the past couple of weeks and it is pretty tricky to set a single goal that hits everyone.

Definately we should set-up a team for Shredder + and do a collective mileage over a month and then the following month we have to beat that mileage, that would be goo accountability, the whole group would need to commit.

I think the challenge should be for a month as this is nice period of time.

As for the actual challenge it's a tough one, we really need one that pushes each Shredder out of their comfort zone and something that will hold them accountable to achieving.

I'm happy to join any challenge that is set-up. Or am happy to set-up.

Take care...

in 212 - Weekly Nutrition Tip: Good Fats on Healthy Simple Living
Hey Lilla,

Have a great time at the concert, I have a John Meyer album and it's great for chilling out too!!

I will run with you Wednesday, in mind that is, I am upping my distance today to 10kms which is 6.25 miles and then Wednesday will go to 13kms which is just over 8 miles. I have run that far for quite a while but thought I would offer as much support as I could as I know that it can be very lonely running these distances.

Good luck...

in 211 - My first marathon training…maybe? on Healthy Simple Living
Hey Lilla,

Well martohon training is sure thing for losing fat. My friend has run 3 now and she lost a stack of weight, not that she was fat before hand. Trouble is you will more than likely loose some muscle too due to the miles you will get through. Good on you, I have done a half marathon and that was tough but I did not train properly for it.

I think marathons are 80% mental 20% physical. You need the right frame of mind and concentration to get through those 26 miles.

Just keep focused on the 8 miles nad try to chunk it up into shorter strips so you can focus on each part. Makes it a bit more fun!!

Good luck and take care...
