I thought this was an unwritten rule, especially in the startup world. When something is new, it's much to easy to point out its flaws. Constructive criticism is alway welcomed, but one should provide a suggestion.

I try to keep these words in mind whenever I give someone feedback or write about a product/service.

Re: We are the water cooler we want to see: 2009 will be the end of the echo chamber.

Interesting post, but i think you missed the point. *Authority* on twitter could be useful (especially from a brand manager's pov).

I agree that many pay less attention to the "water cooler" and want unique info; not something rehashed from the echo chamber. Most social networks already have this built it. This is how I found you and your blog. Someone I trusted sent you an @ reply, then I checked your profile... For people who want unique point of views, they can easily find them.

On the other hand, if I'm searching for my brand's name on Twitter, I'd like to filter by followers or authority. As a brand manager, I'd need to talk with people who had the most followers first (being careful not to neglect anyone else.)

Greg
beYOU.tv
Coovents.com

Re: Anatomy of a Twitter Bot

Hi,

Which host are you using? I'm using GoDaddy, but I'm having some problems.

Thanks,

Greg

Re: Anatomy of a Twitter Bot

Hi Whit,

I got your Twitter bot to work! I moved from GoDaddy to MediaTemple. MT seems to be really great. I then uploaded your script and created a new database. All I had to do was config the script and wham-o - it worked!

Lessons learned: use a real host if you're going to do real web work.

Thanks for your help,

Greg

Re: Anatomy of a Better Twitter Bot

Hi,

Thanks for updatting this script. I'm running your new version but I'm getting this error: Not an ARRAY reference ... line 141.

Line 141 starts with "foreach my $item (@{$data->{status}})."

Is anyone else getting this error?

Thanks,

Greg

Re: Anatomy of a Better Twitter Bot

Thanks for the help, it works now!

Re: Social network death spiral: How Metcalfe’s Law can work against you

Andrew,

Good post. I addressed this topic on a post I wrote for Centernetworks.com about a Twitter monetization plan.

In short, I pointed out, as you do, user retention is critical. Once people start leaving, the service (Twitter, FB, MySpace, etc.) becomes less useful; this makes even more users leave.

I like your party analogy, once the cool people leave, everyone knows it's almost over!

Greg

beYOU.tv

Re: BayAreaGolf Twitter Bot

Hi Scott,

Whitney McNamara sent me to this page because I'm trying to get the lotd bot to work on GoDaddy too.

I've upgraded to a deluxe package and I'm able to run basic PERL scripts. However, I haven't got the Twitter Bot to work.... yet.

Did you get the LOTD bot working on GoDaddy? Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Greg
SoUrban.net

Re: 2008/01/02/twitter-whats-the-best-business-model/

I think placing ads on Twitter or in Twitter's stream are obvious and not original. People are so comfortable with free (ad-supported) web services, that anytime a monetization question comes up, they say "put up some ads".

Ads on Twitter.com would be fine, ads in the stream are not. I don't want to pay to receive ads, that's crazy.

Why not let businesses buy keywords and then have those keywords link back to a site? For example, I could buy "fitness video" and whenever someone typed in "fitness video" that text would link to http://www.beYOU.tv (where I work).

This is a non-intrusive and original way to generate money for Twitter.

What do you think?

Greg

Re: We're Hiring

Gregory Schnese

http://www.SoUrban.net (blog)

http://www.GregorySchnese.com (resume/publications)
