Their conference theme was "Set Sail" so I couldn't resist adding those slides towards the end. ;-)

I welcome questions if anyone has any after viewing these slides. I tend to use images with little text for storytelling purposes, but have put some captions in to help people.

Cheers!
Connie
conniecrosby@gmail.com

Re: What if I’ve got it all wrong?

It is amazing how our subconscious works, and the power it can give us when we learn to (and how to) pay attention to it. The more I read and learn in a variety of areas, the more I rely on my subconscious to process it and draw parallels and links between disparate areas.

Good for you--hope the new line of thought continues to be fruitful!

Cheers,
Connie

Re: What is a librarian’s day like?

What a great use of web statistics looking at your blog traffic! Rather, what this has done is run a search for the phrase "social media" (same as you would in http://search.twitter.com) but then put the recent hits in order of who has the most followers. You will get different results at different times.

Scoble doesn't show up simply because he hadn't used the phrase "social media" recently when you ran the search. Or possibly because he was not pulled into Twitority via the API.

Re: Top Social Media Authorities on Twitter via Twitority

Ah! It's probably just the first time it has showed up so high in your search results. Or maybe they have varied what they show a little bit (usually it comes up as "Did you mean..." at the top) Hopefully if someone accidentally spells your name as Mike Allen with an e in a search, they will see some of your Mike Allan with an a in the results, too. You might want to try googling that spelling, too, just to see.

Cheers,
Connie

Re: 1 book down, 11 to go. People posted sessions they would like to see, others posted sessions they wanted to present, and people posted into a schedule themselves. Sure, it took someone (Jay) taking the initiative to find a location and lead the way, but it was a lot lighter work than a traditional conference.

I worked on a traditional conference held last October that I spent 4 years working on. Compare that to Podcamp which we spent about 3 or 4 months working on. Comparable events, comparable size of groups attending. The difference is palpable.

To be honest, I think this "unconference" style will become more prominent. We just need our conference spaces to catch up since most don't yet have wifi capability for attendees, or not at reasonable rates at least.

Cheers!
Connie

Re: Why I’m leaving Emma

Dave:

Looks like we're on a similar trajectory (like you I have been online since 1986. People comment on liking the look of the site: colorful yet professional design. They are also excited about the messaging which we worked on together. I am pleased that the text will evolve with my business, and am looking forward to adding to the blog.

You suggested three colors for the business cards to give a "collectable" feel to them. It has certainly worked when I have handed out cards to groups, taking care to give different colors to different people. Not so much to break up cliques but to get people even more engaged. I personally felt very challenged by the last minute Pecha Kucha that we organized and wondered how we might bring that sort of immediate involvement to others using the tools we had on hand. I would be all for shuffling people up as well. I do that in the one-day workshop I teach when I split people into groups, figure a way to shuffle them up to meet new people.

Re: Scared Customers

I couldn't agree more, Bill. Not sure how to interpret this statement, though. If the most fun you are having is with social media then there is something wrong in your life? Or if it is fun you shouldn't be doing it? Social media is very much my hobby, my enjoyment. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but commenting on blog posts as part of it. I'm not that big on Facebook or Myspace myself, but if that is what my friends are using, and I want to talk to my friends, then that is what I use.

I "waste" my time taking walks, reading books (fiction even!), playing Sudoku, watching TV, listening to music, and working out at the gym. I also like to "waste" my time partaking in social networking and social media. I use social media to talk to people around the world with interests similar to mine, or with ideas that challenge mine (such as you are). We learn from each other, test new tools and ideas, share our findings. I learn about new events in my city, attend them, meet new people, some of whom have become good friends.

I have had both professional and personal opportunities come my way directly as a result of my social media participation. My career has easily accelerated by five years as a result. I am now writing, speaking and teaching as a result of my participation in blogs, wikis and other tools. I'm not sure what there is re-evaluate. I am happier, getting more job satisfaction, better pay, and *gasp* I am having fun.

Is that so wrong?

If you aren't interested in using all the tools, that is quite okay. We won't take it personally. And if your personal and professional lives hold way more fun than you can find social media, that just rocks! Maybe you will blog about it for us sometime. ;-)

Re: Why Bother Blogging Podcasting and Using Social Networks

In response to Marshal Sandler, actually no I don't have a business. Social networking has just advanced my career so that it is further ahead than where it likely would have been. My work is not related to social networking at all; social networking has just given me a higher profile than I had before. My blogging and the like is actually done outside my work.

Social networking tools are for more than just business. Quite often people use them for personal socializing too. It is more than one big market. The idea of appealing to social networks as a market or "monetizing" these tools is a more recent one.

And social media go beyond things like social bookmarking, twitter and facebook. Those admittedly are part of the "partial continuous attention" phenomenon. But we seem to be having something of a conversation here---and a blog is also social media. So is Flickr if I post photos of my vacation for my friends and family to see. Or if my book club uses a wiki to get organized.

I'm not sure people need to be told when they should use these tools. It helps to know what they are useful for, which types of projects or efforts, but people have to take responsibility for their own lives. I don't understand why others have the right to judge them as wasting time or not having meaningful interaction.

People have found lots of ways to avoid meaningful interaction long before the web.

Re: Personal Branding and Social Media

Thanks, Chris. I agree whole-heartedly with sticking with one name. Unfortunately some systems force you to choose another if yours is already taken, which has been a pain for me. Also I was waivering between whether to be semi-anonymous with a fancy handle or using my real name, and ended up with a sorry mix as a result. I have tried to back-track to put in my real name, and that has ended up awash. I may need to start again with things like Twitter and Skype. I wish systems built in easier ways to change my name!

We also learned this the hard way with a conference I am working. The conference is in a series called "Northeast Regional Law Libraries Meeting" which when working we shortened to "NE2007". This year's conference theme is "Libraries Without Borders." We advertised "Libraries Without Borders" and all the local people working on the conference (a considerable number!) didn't know what it was, didn't connect the two. Similar confusion with one of our major sponsors. If I could go back I would have thought about the branding differently on this one.

Cheers!
Connie

"connieblogger"
"conniec"
"Connie Crosby"

Re: Why LOLSaur Really is Cool

Very cool. It is about the average person making their own content. So often these industries see it as solely their own domain, and as a result tend to only talk amongst themselves, looking to each other for new ideas. It is time to look beyond the blinders and see what other people are doing with the new technologies.

Re: Starting Points for Online Presence

Thanks, Chris! I have been thinking about how folks without any web presence should get started building one, and you have given a bit of a roadmap.

In my mind, Twitter is a more advanced tool--simple but deceptively versatile. I would tend to put it in the "Bonus round" section.

Conversely, the power of photos is strong and so would put Flickr into the "Basics" section. But I suppose since Facebook is the top photosharing site, that might be seen as redundant. Still, I like the idea of posting to Flickr and reposting photos to Facebook.

What would be in the Final Jeopardy round?

Cheers!
Connie

Re: The Beauty of PodCamp

Cool. I was asked in an interview yesterday if my colleagues (law librarians) should all have blogs. I said that blogs were a big commitment, not suitable for everyone, but law librarians should have some sort of web presence. My colleagues tend to gravitate to Facebook, but that is not open to the web for anyone searching for them. For those wanting to simply put up a professional bio page, LinkedIn is perfect as a basic first step.

Re: Podcasters Across Borders- A Canadian Event With Heart

Cool, Chris. As a blogger not in the PR business, I laugh and say "why did they send this to ME? Oh, do you think they want me to blog about this topic?" It's not really obvious. For all I know, I could have just gotten on the wrong company distribution list after being on their website. I tend to file these under "bloggable" but never go back to my file.

On the other hand, I had a communications professional from one of my alma maters (what's the plural of alma mater?) notice I was blogging news about the school, so she emailed me her thanks. Voila! Instant relationship created. She now periodically sends me a note with advance notice of news going onto the website with a "deep link" to the story if I decide to blog it for when it rolls off their front page. I let her know if/when I have blogged about it. Great relationship!

To me, you can't get much more personal and relevant than this.

Cheers,
Connie

Re: Brevity

Sometimes.

Re: Am I Too Naked

I thought about this a fair bit when I first started blogging. I agree with Whitney Hoffman that people can read what you write, but only some will take what you write and apply it themselves.

There are so many others who for whatever reason--too little time, inclination, skill--will not apply it themselves and will come calling because they know you are the expert.

Yes, if you develop some proprietary thinking around a client's project, you don't want to share, but otherwise this really is the signature of what you are doing in the collaborative, open community spaces you are working in. The book Wikinomics by Don Tapscott and Anthony Williams is all about opening things up and sharing. You will get more back in return.

Without this openness you would not have created such a strong network around you. And, that is one of your greatest "secret" weapons.

Cheers,
Connie

Re: FriendFeed- The Hidden Conversation

I started a discussion with colleagues in FriendFeed to help me understand. My fave space there is the rooms, where we can have a conversation without having to follow each other as on Twitter. They pointed out other features not readily apparent to me, such as the ability to hide types of posts of others, and the "best of day/week/month" in the top right corner. All helpful.

I love twitter, but it is real-time (synchronous) discussion. FriendFeed is asynchronous (allows you to post in the same conversation at different times, as with a forum) so this helps manage your time better, you don't have to always have it "on".

I'm still learning my way around, but interested in what distinguished FriendFeed from the others.

Cheers,
Connie

Re: Why Twitter Still Wins

Just discovered I'm one of the ones who lost her account. Most of what I read is what pulls up in Google alert searches I have set up, plus recommendations via Twitter and from the blogs themselves. I periodically check in to favourite blogs, but read few consistently. This definitely keeps my reading and thinking fresh. My theory is that anything truly excellent will rise to the top and resurface again in the future if I miss it. There are just so many amazing, amazing blogs out there that to be honest I gave up trying to read or even track them all!

I do post comments on a lot of the blog posts I read, and am currently using cocomments to keep track of my comments since they are scattered so widely. That has worked successfully, and I love when blogs have the option to notify me by email when followup comments are posted.

Cheers,
Connie

Re: Secrets of the Annotated World

Nice perspective on these ideas, Chris. And don't forget, nothing beats face-to-face networking: talking to everyone you know, being yourself and letting them know you are there to help them. I opened up shop earlier this year and have been quite busy with mostly word of mouth business. And when I get a referral, I find those people are researching me on the web in advance. When they see me talking about issues they are facing, they can see we could be a good fit. So, the networking and the visibility online are working hand-in-glove.

Cheers,
Connie

Re: Guest Post - What Artists Can Teach Everyone About Social Media

Amrita, fantastic post. I believe cross-pollination of ideas from one are to another is important for creativity (or innovation, if you will). Most of my artist friends are not really online; it will be a much richer place once they are.

Cheers,
Connie

Re: Serving Suggestions

Oh, MAN!

<<>>

Re: Serving Suggestions

>>>Connie scrambles to re-write her business website<<<

Re: You’re watching my Twitter video

Thanks so much. We couldn't see it quite as well as you from our end in the room, but it was a lot of fun. Having you participate helped us show how it can make the world a little bit smaller.

Feel free to add your contact info on our new ooVoo page: http://podcamptoronto.pbwiki.com/oovoo

Cheers!
Connie

Re: Hell of a chat with Connie Crosby and Eden Spodek

It is always interesting to talk with you, Andrea.

Donna: yes, that is always an issue.
