Maybe you could tie it in with the "Simpsons" episode on "Faking It".<br>Actually, I suspect many people are faking it as far as religion is concerned, but for many different reasons. I had a pastoral counselor once who said that most ministers are faking it, too (belief in a god, the bible, etc.) She encouraged me to attend a church anyway for the social aspects--I was living, lonely, in a very isolated part of the country. So, I faked it for a while because I love hymn-singing! Fake books are just fine with me, though I don't even need that for "Onward, Christian Soldiers", "Holy, Holy, Holy", or "Hear the Pennies Dropping". Quiz: in which sect was I raised and in which era?

Re: No, really &#8212; what would Jesus do?

It's a journal, and it happens to be in an electronic format. I read so little of it before it did a masterful disappearing act from cyberspace.<br><br>I gave up all cable TV on Jan. 30, 2001, as a temporary austerity move. It's still missing from my mothly bills, as the price rises to astronomic heights. A broadband connection means much more to me. Broadcast channels are sufficient, though I miss the SciFi channel still. It's often difficult to get that spooky, weird, space fix from the mainline.

Re: Whence the novel?

As I beat my daily round of blogs, this is one I feel is a treat to visit. The only other ones I anticipate with warm fuzzies are also by writers. For your sake, don't self-publish fiction in a hard copy book form! You have lots of questions that need to be answered, but first take a step back and a deep breath. Examine your desires, your expectations about this novel. Do you only want to be known as an Author and all the accoutrements you fantasize that means? Do you know the realities of getting from a quickly written ms. to a published book? Are you aware of all the stresses and drawbacks of sustaining the sales efforts required to just make your investments break even, let alone actually make money on a book? You need to do some soul search as well as research before making the next move.

Re: More on Hitchhiker&#8217;s

I wondered about that as I read your casting kudos. I was unaware of any two-headed actors, although I've heard of few of those mentioned. As much a fan as I am of Adams' books, I think I can wait a while (FOREVER?) to see this movie. I'm still yearning for someone to extend the Dune phenomenon. The two versions made pretty much covered the same "ground" and barely scratched the original trilogy.

Re: If I do say so myself

I wish I'd known! I can't even follow what's happened in "Enterprise" and never enjoy Scott Bakula as an actor (he's so 'dead'), so I'm glad to hear the misery has ended. I'd be happy if someone would digitally remaster the original series (if that's possible) and broadcast it on a a network I can receive well (one of the original three, please!) I've watched the complete original series at least six times (including the first broadcasts) and never cease to feel my heart catch at the theme music, nor do I care as a feminist that Capt. Kirk says they go "where no man" went before. They took me away regularly to the escape I enjoy most and gave me the love of my life, Mr. Spock.

Re: Another take on Trek

T'Pol, romance? Get real! For reasons I don't really have to understand, the final episodes played here (San Diego) last night on the WB network. I didn't watch. I couldn't. Miss Marple was on KPBS. I guess it's the newest version from the BBC. I don't know the star's name, but I like her a lot. If I had to choose a character I want to be, it would be Miss Marple. When, exactly, did you see "a crucial plot twist coming"? I thought the writing pretty transparent, although it differed from all the other oh, so very predictable episodes. I was just thinking the other day how I can never get enough Star Trek, especially the original series and cast. I thought that if there's yet another incarnation, I wish they would go back to the original premises. Heck! For a dyed-in-the-wool diehard fan like me, they could use the same scripts, maybe just updating with a touch, just a touch mind you, of special effects (more than transporter fizzies). I just know there are contemporary actors who could recreate the dynamics among the original characters. Hmmm. Now, let's see. Who would play the love of my life, Mr. Spock? Pierce Brosnan? Tom Cruise? How about that cocky little kid who starred in the Titanic for Capt. Kirk?

Re: The living word

People who rely on translations as being accurate are only fooling themselves. For some words, some phrases, there is no translation into another language. Sometimes the same word or phrase translates into many words, each with a differing nuance. <br><br>I'm with you on the paraphrases offering insight. Some of the most profound ones I've experienced come from Mary Baker Eddy's interpretation of the Bible, especially part of The Lord's Prayer, where she paraphrases "Give us our daily bread" as "Feed the famished affections". Realizing that people's feelings are about as important as real food is a powerful insight.

Re: Legal Guide for Bloggers

Have you read this? I remember shivering in the basement of Bethlehem Lutheran listening to the visiting missionaries describe their work in Africa. They'd tell all about the needs of the natives and little about themselves. When did mission work become all about what it can do for the missionary? I thought the point is to help others. And don't give me a "yes, but ..." response.

Re: Questioning short-term missions

Good response, John. The study cited bolsters the position I think I stated to you in private correspondence about probability that the money being spent for these "short term missions" would go a lot farther (do more good) if spent at the site of the needs. It is difficult for me to believe that there aren't Africans who already know how to make soap who could teach other Africans to do the same. Also, they'd know local sources for needed materials, obviating the need to drag pots and pans halfway across the world. I am NOT slamming your good intentions and desire to help others, more like exploring my own understanding of the situation and checking out assumptions. Thanks!

Re: More about short-term missions

Umm, forgive my density, but is she saying that only white people know how to make soap? Human beings developed in Africa! I honestly can't think that soap-making didn't develop until we spread to the northland and turned white! What were the natives using when the colonials invaded their country? Or is it only whites who have this cleanliness fetish? Actually, more like only Americans. Usually it's the poor people who haven't lost such knowledge (them and back-to-the-landers like me). I don't want to get hung up on the specific skill set, thought. I thought the point was to give the poor a trade, which involves far more than production. I maintain that Africans know better how to market and distribute products in Africa. Of course, I can always be wrong, too!

Re: Shameless self-promotion

Sorry I missed this post when it was fresh --congrats! Don't know if that's a teaser, but I'd never go back. What you get really depends on your phone line. You can buy DSL service from any company that leases the local phone lines. Here it's old SBC lines. The service was soooo slow and glitchy. I am quite happy with Time Warner's RoadRunner cable modem service, even though it goes out occasionally. If you do a lot of work online like building websites, uploading files, downloading large image files, music, movies, then cable is the only way to go!

Re: Mission newsletter

Send me the raw newsletter and I'll convert it into a new.PDF file for you with the whole last sentence.

Re: A theological question

Must not be because I've been eating avocados with a spoon for many years and not smote dead yet. I really liked it better than ice cream and, of course, it was low-cal when few thought about calories.

Re: Typos

Amen to that, Brother! If I wanted to detect soemthing like this, I'd put the suspect text into an HTML file and upload it to my server temporarily. Try it twice with and without your name included. This is more effective than Google, I think, because it doesn't return all the distractions!
