in Liberals first to go neg via proxy? on Stephen Taylor - a blog about Canadian politics
In this post 9/11 world, everything has changed. Conservatives make it up as they go along.

"But in this latest post-Dion, post-economic collapse round of the war where everyone is supposed to rise above, if the Conservatives are holding their fire so they won’t be blamed"

Why do I have a ten percenter Conservaspam from Stephen Harper (himself) since Ignatieff came to power then? Hmm?

It's frustrating to see Canadian culture go underrepresented on the WWW. The NFB is barely releasing some of its content online. If it werent for overly restrictive copyright law, ordinary Canadians with VHS or reel tape in hand could be digitizing our cultural film history and putting it on YouTube for the world to access.

I know you to be a partisan too, and you should also know that it's ludicrous to suggest the Liberals have done "nothing" for troops. If sending them to Afghanistan is "nothing", then perhaps.

Yes, what he said was inappropriate. He said the Liberals have done nothing to support the troops, which is of course an incorrect opinion at best.

Stephen Taylor Saskboy, please provide a factual basis for your assertion that the statement was wrong or inapproriate. Just saying it's wrong makes me suspect that you do so from a partisan position rather that an intellectual one since I know you to be a partisan.

in Green Party releases platform on Stephen Taylor - a blog about Canadian politics
After 3 more years of Conservative delay, it may indeed NOW not be possible. Of course they'd compare to the Conservative year of 2050, so people don't have to do conversion math in their heads.

The GST raise would go to municipalities; it sounds like a good idea.
Income tax exemption should have been $20,000 a decade ago.

I have to laugh at the people who say it's not a balanced plan, or that it would collapse the economy !!!11! Jaccard Report? Heard of it? No? Conservative like it that way.

southernontarioan Here are a few of the costs that are unbalanced/balanced

Carbon tax balances off against income tax cuts, income splitting, income tax exemptions for those under $20 000/year, etc.. Now, many people will be paying more, in fact a lot of middle class people will be paying a lot more, but in and of itself these balance out.

Corporate tax cuts: Using the Green party targets and their announced $100/tonne tax reduction it would cost $3 billion/year for the first 10 years.

GST increase/ Infrastructure investment balance out against one another

Foreign aid: Based on our GDP ($1trillion) and the proposed targets (0.7% from 0.3%) it would cost $5 billion annually.

Student loan forgiveness: Based on Stats Can this would cost roughly $500 million/year to do.

Already you are $8 billion over and I haven't even started calculating the health care costs, the costs for twinning the CP rail lines, etc..

But what you and the Green party are forgetting is that you plan on reducing carbon emissions by ~90%. That means your carbon tax will produce less and less money each year. So the Green party estimates that the carbon tax will bring in $35 billion/year in the first year. But by 2020 it will only be bringing in $24 billion. That's a $12 billion shortfall that will have to be made up by increasing taxes or cutting costs somewhere. But instead in the Green Party budget, revenue from the carbon tax increases each year.

I could go on but the claims that the Green party budget is 'balanced' is laughable. The only way it is would be if May is lying and the carbon tax is not going to be revenue neutral and instead will generate loads of cash for the government.

Well, at least those signs were PROBABLY bought with Liberal money. What excuse do the Conservatives have for sending out millions of 10%er propaganda spams, including ones that were delivered after the writ was dropped? Those were paid for with taxpayer money, and were blatant Cosnervative election advertising. More ridiculous still, is that I've only got one bit of mail from the Conservatives since the campaign started, but about 10 since last year otherwise. I guess once the Conservatives realized they had to pay for their own ads, they became a lower priority.

"What is the test for leader's courtesy?"

They are a party leader?
That could be taken advantage of, so there may need to be another test.

randall g The other test has always been there - a new leader of a party that already has seats, who is running in a by-election. I have never heard of a case where the leader's courtesy was extended in a general election.

CB, May is Canadian. If you asked her, she'd identify herself as a Canadian. You don't have to be born here to be a Canadian. And she didn't call Canadians stupid, the clip was cut and we can't know what she was agreeing with in her prior comment that politicians think Canadians are stupid.

Some kind of shenanigans between Harper and the Liberals, eh?

Gabby In QC "Why have the Liberals stood down for Harper in a past election?"
Saskboy, I'm curious - which election are you referring to?

If you go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgary_Southwest#...
you will see that the only time the Liberals didn't field a candidate against Harper was in the byelection in June 2002 (on Mr. Manning's resignation, January 2002). Mr. Harper at the time was running for the Canadian Alliance.

As for Ms. May: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_North_Centr...
In a byelection in November 2006 (on Mr. Fontana's resignation, 20 September 2006), May was opposed by the Liberals, who won the riding. The Conservatives, NDP, Progressive Canadian, Canadian Action and an Independent also ran against her.

If the Liberals are claiming, like you seem to suggest, that Dion's Liberals are not fielding a candidate against her because she's the leader of the Greens, then why did they field one against her in in London-North-Center in 2006? She was already leader of the Greens by then.
Stephen Taylor's picture
Stephen Taylor May didn't have any MPs. Theoretically, any party leader (even the marxist-leninist) could run in any riding he/she chooses. What is the test for leader's courtesy?

Because satellite Internet will always be laggy and few people will want to use it as their primary connection line. It will be more than a decade until most North American people are on the speed of modern broadband.
