in S60 Issues Updated Touch UI Video on Symbian in Motion
There are various shots of the top of the phone here that make me think that this prototype is a "slider" which would lead me think that it still has a physical keypad. This would be a huge plus in my eyes. I have played with friends iPhones and no doubt they are nice, I just HATE not being able to no-look one handed type on the phone. I do this all of the time be it while driving (I do try to minimize this) or in class.
Said shots can be seen at the following time stamps:
0:31 - Right after the phone rings there is a close up of it next to her face. There is a clearly defined "ridge" of negative space about 2.5mm below the screen's surface.
0:45 - As she is interacting with the device it is visible again, it appears to go all the way around the phone.
1:25 - As the phone is flipped to silence the alarm this "ridge" is again visible
Other than that, Zach I agree about the web page scrolling in the wrong direction. The one thing I will say about that it is that it is pretty clear to me that the these screens are 100% simulated and that the device being held isn't actually functioning. I just hope that particular interaction was animated improperly when they generated the simulated output.
I guess time will tell. For all we know this is a dummy device (looks VERY much like an N96 to me, minus the screen-side surface). In fact watching the video again I believe that is exactly what this is. We might have all seen an N96 prototype long before we even knew it. ;-)

in The Eagle has Landed… With an N78 on Symbian in Motion
Hows the build quality?
My N73 creaked like an old floorboard, yet I LOVED that phone. My N95-2's slider slid loose, I taped it up, its loose again (though not as bad), I still LOVE this phone. I just am starting to lose hope for a properly built phone. These high end handsets should be built accordingly... Nokia, you're just lucky I <3 you.

The build quality, for better or worse, is typical Nokia. The N78 is a bit on the lighter side but it's still pretty well-built and solid. Sqeeze the sides though and it's squeak-central. Loud and consistent creaks a plenty...
Barring the N95 8GB NAM, I've yet to come across an Nseries that didn't creak. Actually, the N81 I had breifly didn't creak very much. If build quality is a huge issue for you and S60 is your flavor of choice: E61i, N95 8GB, E71 and possibly the N81 are where you should be looking. I must admit though, that the N78 is growing on my a bit. It will never replace my N95 8GB but I'm getting used to it...

I like how you chose Psiloc's Reflect theme for the first screen shot too. Great theme, first one I ever bought.

in ExtGPS by Symarctic: Use your Phone as a Bluetooth GPS Receiver on Symbian in Motion
Can someone, anyone, comment on if this works to use your N95's GPS with your N800? I have the N800 firmly in my sights, but the GPS features of the N810 are somewhat tempting. If this works, N800 here I come!

in More N95 Accelerometer Love: Y-Inclinometer by Jukka on Symbian in Motion
Zach, thanks for the response.
I just now wonder if developers are going to start making use of this feature in a meaningful way. Sure we see RotateMe kicking things off, and in a VERY useful way. I just wonder how many other apps can benefit from this feature w/o the developers going way out of their way to include it (not saying its hard to include, but rather to find a good use for it, and then limiting that function to the N95 only.)
I am getting a N95-8GB for Christmas, that is if I was a good boy this year. I would like to see it included in some more things, perhaps we as a community need to reach out to the developers with ideas we would find useful and present them to them as feature requests. One idea that comes to mind off hand is, admitidly stolen, to have one of the many multi-alarm programs to incorporate the "flip to silence an alarm" feature which many of us saw on the S60 TouchUI marketing video.
Perhaps I'll start a thread on HoFo and see if some of the fellas there can come up anything good, meanwhile suggestions here would be encouraged as well (at least by myself).

Seeing as how I don't yet have my N95 I was wondering how often this program updates the screen. I know alot of what I do off roading changes the angle of the vehicle rapidly. If this only updates one a second or so its of limited use. If it ran at 30FPS or so, which I could easily see being possible, then it would be very useful.
Zach, not sure if you have it installed or not yet, or anyone else care to share this information?

in Is Symbian Trying to Kill Off Small Developers? on Symbian in Motion
Well I can see the draw back of including features developed by others into future feature packs, I don't want to have to pay for things that should be standard. Autolocking of the keypad, something I've used since WAY back and its not on my N73... kinda unacceptable to me. I know that there are third party programs that do this, but why should I pay for something that should be standard. (Sorry to the third party guys there). I guess it comes down to creativity, if its an original idea, I am far more likely to pay for it. If its just coding up something I'm far less likely to. Also I do like being able to install a new firmware and not have to install 30 small apps (exageration) afterwards for features that can be easily incorporated into the OS. I think that Nokia should look into compensating those who develop original ideas which it wants to include into future feature packs. I would only compensate the original versions and not the copy's of such work unless a significant improvement was made. Basically its a delicate and it needs to be treated as such. Developers are a very important resource, but at the same time you have to balance out the needs of your consumers. Eventually as the market matures people aren't going to want to have to spend $500 on a phone and only find out they need another $40 of software for some features that by all means ought to have been in the OS in the first place. It would be smart to be ahead of the curve here and work this situation out now instaed of waiting years and bleeding developers to other platforms in the mean time.

@JonnyBruha
While I have yet to do any sort of extensive testing on this I can't imagine this having much impact. I know the N95 is squeezed for power as it is, but I would think this would work just fine. Most screensavers that suck battery are using alot of power to draw something "pretty". That takes processing power to do, this shouldn't draw anymore than the default screensaver seeing as how it prety much uses the exact same resources (a bit more ram though, but the power draw created by memory is pretty small compared to processing).

The webdragging thing could, presumably, easily be a user configurable thing.
