in what is a smartphone? - mediabistro.com: MobileDevicesToday on mediabistro.com: MobileDevicesToday
A smartphone to me is basically a pocket computer, as you alluded to in an earlier post. The problem is where do we draw the line? My mums cheap and cheerful Samsung phone allows you to run java apps and games and plays MP3s. Is it a smartphone?

in The iPhone arrives tomorrow: I don’t like it already. on Mobile Industry Review
Its free on £45. £99 on the £35 contract.

Entirely reasonable.

Plus you get unlimited internet usage in that, so perhaps you will finally get a decent mobile web experience.

But good luck. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

in Is Twitter losing it? on Mathew's comments
It might be the best option. From what Steve Gillmor was saying yesterday, Twitter can't be fixed as it stands.

If I was Ev i'd be looking to sell immediately and cash in.

in Is Twitter losing it? on Mathew's comments
If there was an easy way to move my contacts over, i'm gone. I don't have a Windows machine so that app for it is no use to me.

If FriendFeed was smart they would build a contact importer of their own, that crawled your Twitter contacts to see if they were already on FF. And if they weren't, it would set up Imaginery Friends with the appropriate Twitter account added as a feed so that you would still get all of your contacts Tweets in FF.

Then once you are on FF, you find that comments start to ween you off the need to Tweet.

mathewi I was thinking the exact same thing, Jamie -- if there was an easy way
to set up Twitter friends in FriendFeed I would do it (Internet Duct
Tape has a way, but it's a Windows program and sounds complicated).
As it is, I'm considering setting up imaginary friends (I love that
term) for those people I really want to follow from Twitter and axing
the rest.

in Why FriendFeed will go mainstream (Part II) on Scobleizer
@Earle

You can't really compare the situation two years ago with what is happening now with the site. Since being bought by Google, Jaiku is effectively dead - so it is no wonder why you are having problems.

in 2008/05/20/facebook-traffic-decline/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I am looking at other Nielsen country data for Facebook and the trend is still upwards.

UK for instance went from 9.8m > 10.2m

I think that all we can conclude is that the huge growth has slowed down and these small changes month on month will become the norm, as everybody who wants a Facebook account has one.

in Why FriendFeed will go mainstream (Part II) on Scobleizer
Pretty much the entire feature set of FriendFeed was available in Jaiku two years ago, plus more.

Yet you dismissed it, saying that you prefer the simplicity of Twitter over a feed aggregator.

What changed?

in New Google Reader on iPhone? Bah! on Scobleizer
Hmm .I think you rushed this post Robert. I have been playing with it for a few hours now and its pretty amazing. Particularly for those of us who maintain a folder/tag structure. The way you can expand on the fly without reloading the page is superb.

And when you expand an item there is a Share button right there. Seeing as you need to actually click on an article to read it, I don't see the problem you are stating with Share.

in Google ruining Christmas? Get a grip on Mathew's comments
Finally, an opinion that matches my own. The current whinge mentality of the blogosphere is kinda starting to piss me off.

Lets refresh our memories of what shared items are, in Googles own words, inside Reader when you click on it.

"Your shared items are publicly accessible.
They are available as a page at http://www.google.com/reader/shared/xxxxxx (and there's a feed too) "

Are people seriously going to argue that Shared items are anything but? Its crystal clear. Black and white.

If people want a private bookmarking service, use the Star or create a tag of your own. Click Settings > Tags and you will see that you can make any arbitrary tag public or private.

in Google Reader needs GPC on Scobleizer
@miketheatuary

you already can create ad hoc feeds. Click Settings > Tags. Every tag you create can be made public or kept private.

When reading a feed you want to tag say "close friends", type gt, and then choose the tag you want. Very quick. Very simple. Very flexible.

in Google Reader needs GPC on Scobleizer
I say its #1. On the settings > tags page, Shared Items clearly states that they are shared and that there is a public page for them.

If people wanted a private bookmarking service, they should use the Starred items.

The settings do not need to be any more granular.
