in What’s so great about Google Talk? — Elliott C. Back on Elliott Back's Blog
Well, not every step to world domination is exciting, some are pretty minor.
I still think they should have release something like Trillian or bought this software anyway - or fused it with Skype ... now that would have been spectecular.
I would love to get rid of all these different service - and have ONE IM network. But those pesky providers won't talk to each other.

Even worse: Google only offers eMail-Accounts with the Domain @googlemail.com here in Germany. And is down a lot as well. This sucks - you are right.

in The Latest Bugs and Naming from our “friends” at Redmond… — Elliott C. Back on Elliott Back's Blog
Vistaschmista.
Vista is so 1950's.
I think the naming Windows 95, 98 and 2000 worked best (for me).

Maybe you two should have a coffe together - or a group hug.
@ Lorelle: A simple I am sorry would have done - not a big 'this is how we do' club. We are all volunteers in this life.
@ Elliot: Never mind the Borokraten - just do it again. Would be bad to loose your insights. Don't be a diva.

in Business Class Hosting Upgrade on Elliott Back's Blog
Welcome to your german overlords - 1und1 is a german company. ;-)
We now suck at building cars - but we are excellent at hosting stuff. Rented servers are incredibly cheap here in Germany.
I am only paying 39 Euro for 300 GB traffic and 80 Gbyte webspace on Suse.

in Diversity in Blogging (Again) on Elliott Back's Blog
Well, that's overall an old problem: quantity is easier measured then quality. And especially in writing/reporting quality itself is hard to judge and often a very personal thing as well.
Most A-List people of the blogosphere are writing about the blogosphere itself. Something I find highly boring. The other more prominent A-list bloggies write about american politics. Another boring topic. So? There are hardly and A-list blogs apart from fansites (Miss Spears), games (w00t!) and porn left.
Fark, slashdot, MeFi and BoingBoing are mostly link blogs with additional comments - but feature rarly any real unique content.
Even such great sites/blogs like Art & Letters Daily hardly get any coverage at all.
So where is the good content in the blogosphere apart from commentaries, news and link recycling? Or is that all that there is about blogging?

Popularity has nothing to do with either 'reporting the facts' or really having some good insights. There is also the old problem of 'group think' (joining some popular opinion, because you can't be bothered to have your own) or 'follow the leader' (wrong placed loyalty just because an external 'enemy' threatens the internal consent of the groups identity).
A-list rarly works in terms of 'enlightenment'.

in Public Blogger: Kottke on Elliott Back's Blog
If Mr Kottke wants to survive on blogging he has to write for his life. I am not a Kottke fan - but he had/hhas his audience ... but he seems to lack more and more 'beef' on his site. It is VERY hard to produce high level content on a daily basis - this is why most more popular site resert to recycling news or comment only on recent events - that's much easier.

in Will IE7 be better than Firefox? on Elliott Back's Blog
Hmmm. I am curious how standard the standard compliance will be. So far I haven't been impressed by ANY browser maker in that respect. AND I think some of these standards SUCK anyway. The whole idea of CSS is misguided in several aspects.
The thing I am really afraid of are so called 'new standards' imposed by MS on the web.
*sigh*

I could think of a few simplier things to add:
* search and replace within postings
* sort all postings by author, category or any other combined criteria
* simple switch to take the blog, comments or trackback offline
