I never quite made it round to see the interactive white board in action - perhaps this Tue as a few pupils are out on trips? I've enjoyed reading your contributionsand. Cheers, Alan

Re: Music Camp

Hi Robert,

It was good to have you there. Thanks also for showing me the Glen Bay Pipe. As a return favour, I've sent pdfs of the Kesh Jig (mandolin notation with tab) in the keys of A, D, E, & G to your NBHS address. Enjoy your holiday!

Re: Blogs I Miss

Hi Robert,

Here are a few I have in my feed reader. I don't read all of them every day, but there is frequently interesting stuff. If you're wondering where all the education ones are, I know you'll have them already. Most of the urls give away enough to guess what they're about.

http://blog.ted.com/

http://www.oed.com/

http://www.primary-teacher-uk.co.uk/

http://mtblog.typepad.com/rsa_networks/

http://www.therestisnoise.com/

http://jamesfrankel.musiced.net/

http://theovergrownpath.blogspot.com/

http://www.overcomingbias.com/

http://stephenfry.com/blog

http://mikewadejournalist.blogspot.com/

http://ebbolles.typepad.com/babels_dawn/

http://www.mindhacks.com/

http://www.sharpbrains.com/

http://www.newscientist.com/news.ns

http://science-community.sciam.com/forum.jspa?f...

http://neuropsychological.blogspot.com/

http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/

http://www.omniglot.com/blog/

http://www.sciencedaily.com/

Re: Students 2.0

Hi Robert,

I have, from time to time, complimented adults on the quality of the writing which seems, to me, a separate skill from the coherence of the argument or the ingenuity of ideas, connections etc. I hope it doesn't seem patronising. There seem to be four types of post:

dull topic - dull writing
dull topic - lively writing
interesting topic - dull writing
interesting topic - lively writing

At the speed which most people assemble their posts it's difficult to hit that fourth category every time and it's nice to let someone know when they've hit the spot.

Rather unbelievably, one of my favourite writers - George Eliot - fits, in my personal view, into the second category. I'm not much bothered by the outcome of the stories but the writing is top class.

Re: Students 2.0

Bouncy and to the point! According to my birth certificate, I am neither 14 nor female. I don't even particularly like texting.

I tried Cre8txt at the Scottish Learning Festival. The predictive element of it is not the same as the T9 system on most mobile phones. I wasn't overly impressed by it - but they didn't really give me a decent shot. I'd be interested to hear how it goes in class.

Re: Texting Experiment

Very interesting points, Robert. I was about to suggest that a possible difference between shorthand and txt is that shorthand is relatively stable whereas txt is prone to change with fashions i'nit? This could create a danger when squares marking essays and exams weren't hip to the latest groovy terms like what I am, daddy-o. Then I looked up shorthand on wikipedia and was amazed at how many versions there are/have been and how complex the history is. In the light of today's technology, I wondered if shorthand didn't already exist and someone invented it - would they be taken seriously?

Re: Weighed down by Web 2.0

The oldest blog post I could find on wearnines of the new can ben found by following this link:

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ecc...

Re: Ski Trip

Break a leg - whoops - wrong venue.

Re: My first hornpipe

Nice tunes Mr Jones. Perhaps after the Spring Concert, when there are no Tuesday Guitar Group rehearsals, we could get together and run through them with some guitar accompaniment.

In the meantime, you might be interested in checking out the Listen Again of mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile on Radio 3's World Routes:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/worldroutes/index.s...

The programme opens with a nice tune from Galicia called O Santo de Polvera (perhaps a tribute to the patron saint of the dust buster?)

This is his band's website: http://www.punchbrothers.com/

Re: It’s that time again

Enjoy the trip!
