in Save Time Everyday with These 23 Mac OS X Keyboard Shortcuts [Mac Tip] on Zaphu Forum
@Matt - Are you running Tiger or Leopard? Spotlight changed with Leopard to highlight the first result - making it a great way to launch applications. Quicksilver is very nice and much more powerful than Spotlight but if you only use it for launching apps or opening files, why install extra software that you don't need?

in How to Encrypt Your USB Memory Stick in Case of Loss or Theft [Mac Tip] on Zaphu Forum
@J.J. - I agree completely in the case of a windows machine. For a Mac I use a combination of filevault, 1password, firefox with noscript, firewall turned on of course, and little snitch. With that combination I feel pretty secure. However, I would be hesitant to enter passwords or private information on someone else's Mac.

Also I am very nervous connecting a computer directly to the internet, I feel much better from behind a NAT device with UPnP disabled. You can use the GRC port scanner to test your firewall at https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 . If you are serious about security you should listen to the 'Security Now' podcast as well.

guest u r crazy dude... seriously crazy! do you work for NASA? do you wear a tin foil hat?...
Ric You really are biased towards windows... security in Windows or Mac is on the same level. Firefox, noscript, firewall, passwords, filevaults all exist in both systems.
If you want to do a serious analysis you mustn't constantly imply mac is better. Because, it's all the same.
The major flaw in security is the user. Not the OS.

in How to Encrypt Your USB Memory Stick in Case of Loss or Theft [Mac Tip] on Zaphu Forum
@J.J. - You might consider running portable applications from a flash drive, for example keep firefox and thunderbird on a flash drive and carry that around in order to check the web and email from any mac. You can find out more here,
http://www.freesmug.org/portableapps/
Check carefully about where your passwords are stored before using this solution. There are also windows versions available here,
http://portableapps.com/

Is this more to your liking? I simply don't know of a version of roboform2go for the mac, sorry.

@J.J. - Upon further investigation I'm finding that IronKey's Linux and OS X features are limited, see https://support.ironkey.com/article/50150000000... and https://support.ironkey.com/article/50150000000... . Let me know what you think of the IronKey features.

in Use SSH to Create Secure Tunnels for File Transfers (SFTP), Remote Desktop (VNC), Subversion (SVN), and Firefox Traffic on Zaphu Forum
@Sniper Fox - Very very good point. I guess I am most concerned about securing traffic such as banking and email when in a hotspot (e.g., starbucks, panera). If someone is concerned about an outside party knowing which sites they are visiting they should use a HTTP poxy as you suggest.

in Use SSH to Create Secure Tunnels for File Transfers (SFTP), Remote Desktop (VNC), Subversion (SVN), and Firefox Traffic on Zaphu Forum
@Philip - Thanks, however, if someone is using port forwarding (i.e., a port other than 22) to get through a firewall I don't think svn+ssh will work. If anyone knows of how to specific a port number in the svn+ssh command let me know.

@Mark - I had trouble figuring out how to specify a specific port number with svn+ssh. I have to poke through a firewall to reach the svn server. If you know of a solution please let me know.

in How to Encrypt Your USB Memory Stick in Case of Loss or Theft [Mac Tip] on Zaphu Forum
@polo - If you are trying to create an encrypted volume on a 4GB USB drive you will probably have to create a volume that is around 3.8GB. Check the actual (not the commercial claim) volume for your memory stick and you should be able to create a custom sized encrypted volume of the appropriate size. Let me know if that works for you ...

in How to Sync Mac Address Book via Yahoo without .Mac [Mac Guide] on Zaphu Forum
@Sam - Ok I started from scratch on a new machine to try and figure out your problem. During step 2, when you have iSync open. Go to iSync preferences and check the 'Enable syncing on this computer' as well as the 'show status in the menubar' option. Close the preferences window but NOT iSync, check the menubar icon to confirm a 'Sync Now' option is available. If it isn't open preferences again and toggle the 'Enable syncing on this computer' option off and back on. Close the preferences window and check the menubar again. Repeat this until you get a 'Sync Now' option, took me a 3 times (some sort of bug). Make sure you quit iSync before you select Sync Now though. Good luck, let me know if it works for you.

@Brian - Try reseting the sync history. To do so, go to the iSync.app - Preferences and click reset sync history. Quit iSync and try a fresh sync from the menubar.

@Christy - Good point! I guess I have always viewed Aperture as more of a competitor to Adobe's Lightroom than Photoshop. Since I haven't tried either Lightroom or Aperture I can't comment on functionality differences. I started using Pixelmator and have been quite happy with it.
