Social networking activities done for entertainment then fall into that category - not much business reward or potential.

However, savvy marketers are spending time, and in 2008 predictably an increasing amount of time (per person and en masse) on social networking for as non-entertainment. And employees of companies that engage with consumers along social marketing channels certainly are doing it for business, with entertainment thrown in if that helps the brand objectives.

Individual techie developers are blending the entertainment and business parts of of social networking, and (gasp) sometimes in the same sentence or tweet! The ROI for these activities is part business, part pleasure, with little wasted.

Re: Email Becomes Center of Social Networks?

Nick - feel free to use my relevant earlier cartoon... it hints that social conversations and communications happening outside of email could possibly become the norm in the future. Maybe its just fantasy, except for people who converse via comments. And congrats on the launch of your site!

Re: Can Social Networks Be Monetized Effectively?

A monetization idea - adapted from a discussion within one of Seth Godin's books - would be for SNS's have newsletters on topics that interest members, and monetizing the (ugh) web 1.0 way.

Re: The Social Web Makes My Head Hurt

An unfortunately common thread for this year... 2 months ago it was my thought that we "perhaps are now enabled to reach and then exceed the limits of our human capability to socialize". And the Password-reset function is my BFF.

Re: Interview With Charlene Li, Author of Groundswell

Nice interview... focus on the relationship not the technology. Definitely agree that in a few years all of this "I'm going social" stuff will seem silly!

Re: A New Social Network for Russian Billionaires

Hopefully they will let us follow them on Twitter? My Russian needs practice, and is not up to speed-reading the flash intro, but I know many people who can translate. Maybe I will stream the translation on a new billionaire channel I'll be starting on Mogulus.com.

As to the concept, it's great - pompous, unique, involves fame & fortune, and exclusivity. And nobody will get to hear "You're Fired!"

Re: Developers See $12 CPMs on Facebook

Useful interview - there are some social app developers that I will be forwarding this on to.
