in Kiddie Parade and Street Fair on Wallyhood
The parade is great fun to watch too. All those little costumed kids are sooo cute. Our favorite was that drill team with all those tiny majorettes – adorable. Last year our baby really enjoyed watching the colorful firetrucks and buses, clowns, musicians, and the rest, and afterward there was a stellar high-school marching band performing outside Wallingford Center. I mean, they were really good, and not just in a really-good-for-a-high-school-band sort of way.

Glad to see your scorn of puns (http://www.wallyhood.org/2009/06/mad-chickens/) is not completely intransigent!

"Tree cozies." Love it. Now if only they would knit gorillas.

in Grinding Wheels of Progress on Wallyhood
My husband and I were in a similar situation a few years ago: Our landlord tried to kick us out so they could demolish our rented house and sell it to a condo developer. We discovered there are some excellent tenants'-rights laws on the books in Seattle that prevent landlords from doing such things without some compensation to tenants. We ultimately negotiated very reasonable terms (I believe we got our full deposit back and didn't pay last month's rent) and agreed to leave posthaste. Your mileage may vary (there are a lot of factors involved in how/when various laws apply), but it's certainly worth checking out the legal issues just in case.

I'd recommend starting here: http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~scripts/nph-brs.... (search for "Just Cause Eviction").

Good luck!

And, hey, if that doesn't ring your bell either, there's that pole-dancing studio a few blocks away. They say dancing with Poles is a great workout.

in Fourth of July Chaos on Wallyhood
The neighbors in our building, up north a ways from Gasworks, all sit on their balconies and watch the fireworks and ooh and ahh together. At the end, we all applaud and cheer. It's the most connected I feel to my neighbors all year. I'm with others who've said living in Wallingford is great for Fourth of July. It's all the people who have to drive into our neighborhood from elsewhere who've got it bad.

in Zoo Tunes Kid Drop-off on Wallyhood
Rob, we usually get to at least one ZooTunes show every summer, and you're right, they are uncommonly family-friendly. Loads of little ones are always there, enjoying a picnic with mom and dad and then running up and down the little hill off to the side of the meadow. The concerts are quite early too, so they don't mess with bedtimes too much. I'm kind of surprised the zoo is offering childcare, but ZooTunes would be a fun kid-free date night too, so sure, why not?

We took our five-month-old last year, and she lay on the blanket and dug the Indigo Girls. This year, we expect she'll boogie to Ladysmith Black Mambazo . . . and then run up and down that little hill.

So . . . I know I could just Google this, but it occurs to me that other Wallyhood readers might want to know too: What, really, is the Wallingford Community Council anyway?

in Caspar Babypants report on Wallyhood
Locavore-music tip: Those who enjoyed Mr. Babypants live should check out the CD "Sing with a Child," a collection of quirky tunes for little ones that features Chris Ballew (aka Caspar Babypants) and friends. Sales of the CD support PEPS, a nonprofit helping families that's based right here in Wallingford.

Sing with a Child: www.amazon.com/Program-Early-Parent-Support-PEP...

If you're a parent, you might have heard about PEPS's terrific newborn groups. PEPS's mission is to provide "community-based programs that enable parents of infants and young children to meet the challenges of parenting through mutual support and shared information."

Re: Margaret's comment: Actually, you can also still get free delivery by spending $75 on a given order. They're test-driving the $400/month thing to see which model makes more sense. Meanwhile, if you ever don't qualify for free delivery, the charge is only $5, which as I recall is cheaper than Safeway's delivery fee.

I have been loving Amazon Fresh for the past couple of months here in 98103 because a) it means I don't have to grocery shop with my toddler, b) my mother-in-law has discovered it's a fun way to send celebratory birthday meals, c) their natural/organic and meat selections are way better than QFC, which is the only competition in my walking radius, and d) it saves time. I don't work for Amazon, nor does anyone I know, by the way. I'm just seriously pleased with the service!

Cool! I will definitely try the ice cream (and perhaps let my one-year-old sample it as well, for your photo has inspired me!).

It's funny that you mention bees. When you complained of not having fruit on your trees, I was going to suggest that you look into mason bees but never got around to it. I guess you know all about them already!

Is Hive Mind Honey available anywhere in the 'hood? Honey happens to be on my grocery list this week. Sure, Amazon Fresh has it, and so do my CSA folks (Full Circle Farms), but it'd be great to get it even closer to home.
