in “They become their parents.” on newcritics
I was taken abcak with the proposition, "they become their parents." I do think this film shows a segent of the sixties population such as those who worked for the USA abroad and got loaded on booze, and never took notice of the Vietnam war.
Now I mus think this film over, after having watched it so many times.

in Darling, If You Want Me To See, See Only You… on newcritics
This type of program doesn't turn me on. I will explain to you why. It's too close to home in too many ways. Here in Santa Monica we live with kids who were molested at the blue ribbon middle school. We are suburbia by the shore with tinges of pseudo-socialism and bums on the beach.
I prefer the nerdie guys in "The Big Bang Theory"-- the dialog is witty, they are great nerds, and the program ads laughter to my life, sorely in need of it.

in Bo Diddley Goes to Heaven on newcritics
I was lucky to see Bo Didley at the Santa Monica Peir in the late eighties. My friend, The Laureate Poet, Had told me about Bo. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known about him. He was right in that he didn't get enough recogntion.
I'm glad he performed for the love of music, though.

in Sydney Pollack on newcritics
The news of Sidney Pollack's death came as such a shock last night. We were used to seeing him in vignettes of older films, sharing his knowledge of film. He seemed to be etarnal.
I feel sorry there won't be any new work by Sidney Pollack.

in College is a Waste of Time 101 on newcritics
Hello There! I've had 23 years of education. My husband,31 years, which include his Ph.D. Sadly,we come to the conclusion our son isn't mature or driven enough to go to college. His I.Q. is off the charts, but Special Ed law under W. has failed him. It'been a marathon of watching, checking and hoping for a change we now see is far from reach.

in Picture of Prejudice on newcritics
Isn't it a tough life? When I arrived back to my country, in 1985, I learned wasn't really American. At USC, at the height of "Valley Girl" crowd, I was Latino. That was shocking. In Brazil, even Pelé's son was registered "white."
Barack isn't African-American to me. Raised by his Anglo parent and grandma, culturally, he's different.
Maybe USA voters like him as a novelty. I am pro-Hillary despite her miscalculations. But, anyway, I do like you!

My mother liked him; my uncle, whose memorable question was, "Jo, what if Sinatra dies?"
The videos just started. Indeed, his version of Stardust is desperate. I love older standards because of my uncle and my mother.

in The Posthumous Words of Heath Ledger on newcritics
I Ihave firends here in Greater Los Angeles who owork for the Industry. They believe there is mors than meets the eye about Heath Ledger's death. Heavier than Heaven was another fictional bio , in this case of Kurt Cobain, whose last days no one can account for.

I say R.I.P. all of them. Please.

in My One Oscar Tidbit: We Saw the Horses in Realm & Conquest, Too on newcritics
Maybe George Clooney is doomed to be overlooked by the Academy the same way Barbara Stanwick, Henry Fonda and so many others were. He's had a string of powerful performances but no Oscar®.

in Mischanneling Marilyn on newcritics
Good gracious. Marilyn was nearly forty when she died, if I'm not mistaken, and Lindsay Lohan is only 21? What happened to this young woman with all of plastic surgery available? She has no hips, no derrière, sagging tits. Lending herself to a comparison with Marilyn made her a fool, again. I do feel sorry for the chick and nauseated at the photographer who convinced her this would have been a good move for her career.

I read this post in its feed format but had to come to the real thing to leave my comment. Bill's preference brought a smile to my lips. That is a great scene. I don't really like the Wizard of Oz. The post was informative and dynamic. It was enjoyable to read. Thanks for adding more information to my brain in a fun way.

in Moliere in Love on newcritics
It's hard to comment on a review of a flm I cannot fathom. I saw "Shakespeare in Love" and enjoyed it immensely. I am very familiar with Molière's works and the feeling I get from this review is that it was a mistake to even make the picture. Whether this is true will remain to be seen prochainement sur un écrain prochain de moi.

in Atonement on newcritics
I read the e-mail feed and had to commennt. This film, from title to poster, never fooled me for a nano-second. Sorry you had to suffer the torture of a "everything you said" crummy movie. You would've profitted from a WGA strike that prevented this stuff from being made.

in Sinatra on Love Letters on newcritics
Your post is in my del.icio.us Anarchic_Universe net, which goes to Brazil and to anglophone countries. In addition, I must send the link to my cousin ao my 78-yr.old uncle can see it. My uncle and two friends in Rio de Janeiro grew up on Sinatra the broken-hearted one over Ava Gardner. My uncle and godfather came to NYC to attend all possible shows for a year. He was quite disappointed with Sinatra's hear-broken performance. That didn't change his love for the legend. One day he asked my mother, "Jo, what if Sinatra dies?
Your post will make a lot of people happy. Thank you very much.

in Waiting For Beckett: Any Godot Will Do on newcritics
It was delightful to read such a different interpretation of "Waiting for Godot." I studied the play for my degree in English and actually saw it. Your take is quite refreshing as opposed to the gloom and doom ones I studied before.
Thanks!

in The Time of His Time has Come to an End on newcritics
I am older, a baby-boomer, bi-cultural, raised in Brazil during my formative years. What I know about Norman Mailer is he was bigger than life, as you described him. His The Naked and the Dead made a dent on many regretful Stalinists in the 70s, the "New Left" older crowd, friends' parents with whom I had lunch, for example. Your piece on Norman Mailer makes me curious about The Naked and the Dead. Vonnegut is from my time. I like him. It's too bad the younger generation lacks info on our recent past so they could make their choices.
Living in Brazil gives one the perspective of more open politics and culture, in a way. On the other hand, I regret not having seen all the events you described.

Olá do Universo Anárquico. Este espanhol é tudo menos espanhol. Aprendi espanhol aqui na Grande Los Angeles. Isto é um "fake". Não merece divulgação no meu entender. Por quê o Brasil apóia o Chávez?
Deve ser petróleo. Evo Morales? O gás.
Não creio que o Brasil queira comprar briga com ninguém. ano passado, quando a Bolívia fez o maior escarcéu sobre seu gás natural, pode até ser que o Brasil teha contemplado os prós e os contras. Bem bonitinho seu blog.
