Publishers can name their own CPM price and thereby receive control on yield that publishers don't get from AdSense and others.

John

Re: Powerset’s search technology scoop, may scare Google

Interesting info - and a competitor to Google in search is good, no doubt. At what point does Google try to partner with the publisher? After all, without the publisher, Google loses its almighty power. At ContextWeb, we're opening things up for the publisher. They're going to get a guaranteed CPM - the publisher tells us what CPM they want from their ad network - and they can still work with AdSense.

Re: 2007/04/20/myspace-porn/

My vote is a non-vote. The Wordpress blog is all set up to autoping. Not sure what the issue is. - It's always possible it's me, though.

Google seems to take care of itself but I don't track the pings as closely as Technorati. I still prefer Mr. Sifry's site. I agree with you Robert about the UI.. also, just feels like more of a community there. That's what I'm looking for.

My two cents.

Re: Is Microsoft bidding up acquisitions on purpose?

No doubt it's hard to say whether the rock 'n roll approach or conservative approach is the way to go. But, I know that MSFT is sitting there with 3.1 billion dollars more in cash and securities than Google is today. Google has made its gambit. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft responds... if it does.

Re: Doubleclick turned down Microsoft money?

I like the reasons you offer, Robert. Also agree with Don Dodge about no one truly knowing.

I'd add one minor point to your culture 'bullet.'

Google and Doubleclick's offices are in the same building in NYC. The merging of the cultures - to a degree - had already been successfully tested.

This sort of merging doesn't always work, though. ContextWeb (my company, an online ad network) is in the same building as Century 21 - a well-known retailer of discounted name brand clothing. Generally, I've always find their shirts a bit too tight. Therefore, no mergers in the foreseeable future.

Re: Get on ScobleShow, get fired

Harsh.. can't believe someone got fired. I take it this person didn't give anything away proprietary but merely participated in an open discussion about public info?

Seems to me someone blew an unnecessary gasket. I understand the need to control public facing messaging to a degree, though.

Re: FAST, the Comeback Kid?

Andy.. I can say that ContextWeb agrees with your assessment. We've been down that road (Fast's) and it doesn't make sense. Unless you're an enormous site... it might work BUT, you'll still have remnant AND you'll still be working with ad networks to help pay the bills.

Re: Tracking Potential Google Killers

I still get the best search results on Google. But, let me ask an SEO question.. Aren't you concerned about the shared links and excerpts getting spidered and creating duplicate content of your site? Or am I thinking too hard?

Continued success,

John Ebbert

Re: What’s Hot on Andy’s Link Blog?

Got ya, Andy. I think you've answered my question with the "snippet."

I was actually thinking more about your content.. you're publishing a snippet on your reader but the whole article, obviously, is on Marketing Pilgrim. So is there a negative SEO effect by having the snippet published elsewhere and creating duplicate content? Answer: No, not with a snippet. Am I making sense yet?

(just getting some insight from the expert - you!)

Re: What’s Hot on Andy’s Link Blog?

Now I see what you're saying - that helps immensely. ContextWeb is releasing a new exchange for publishers.. you can sign up for the beta via our April Fools day 'spoof':

http://www.slooflirpacenter.com

Re: TopRank March Madness

Hi Lee,

I always enjoying reading your work. And, I'd love to have heard your business blogs presentation. ContextWeb has just launched its own blog and the ROI discussion is ever present. Does it all come down to page views and uniques? It's a bit of a rhetorical question but perhaps we chat at SES in nyc if you plan on attending in April.

John

Re: 5 Reasons to Attend Search Engine Strategies NYC

I couldn't agree more with #5, Lee .. and I live here! No question. PHDs aren't wasted at all.

Shameless plug coming, hoping I can interest you...

Would you be interested in signing up for the beta of our new ad network at ContextWeb? Unlike Google, we're letting the Publishers set the CPM that they want to get paid - guaranteed CPMs.

http://www.contextweb.com/publishers

No rev share blackbox.

Sorry for the spam.. but I think this will be big for web publishers.
