Will, would love to hear your thoughts about these results in light of the new report from the Mercatus Center, Freedom in 50 States. Not a lot of overlap in the top 10.

in Morally Bogus Debates on Will Wilkinson
Which argument are you making? That harm ought always be minimized or that freedom of movement ought never be infringed upon? If the former, then you would have to be committed to reversing your opinion if it could be proven that the unrestricted free movement of individuals resulted in more harm for those individuals (I can see the graphs now), whereas if the latter it wouldn't matter how awful things got in a situation of unchecked immigration, because the right to free movement must never be violated. (Where are you deriving that right from, anyway?)

I guess I'm having trouble because you very often use words like "moral" and "right" but then end up making essentially pragmatic arguments. Perhaps I'm just not understanding you.

(I do understand, however, that often when someone makes what is essentially a pragmatic argument against your position and you call them a moral chauvinist! Not that this is what Larison was doing.)

Does your Kerry cheerleading ever pass into "transparent coalitional bias," or do you two just reason identically all the time?

Will Wilkinson KSE, Through cohabitation and constant conversation, we have reached something like Bayesian convergence. So my Kerry cheerleading is hard to separate from self cheerleading. So yes, I am biased in favor of our little coalition, and pretty transparently so. Go us!

Never thought that I'd regret buying that book, but now I do.

You ought to get John Mikhail on. His book has been forthcoming forever - try to figure out when we'll finally get to read it!

in Dreams from My Grandfather on Will Wilkinson
Things to consider:

1) How much is your "choice" not to attribute signifiance or meaning to the heritage you share with your grandfather determined by the fact that you didn't know him, as opposed to your desire (I'm assuming) to define yourself without reference to the ancestral? You might be more inclined to say you share things in common had you had a relationship with him (although empirically, as mentioned above, the amount of his natural endownment that is yours would be the same in both instances).

2) The average defensive tackle for the Michigan Wolverines today weighs 296 pounds. I hope you like creatine.

in Meditations on Collective Action and Moral Norms on Will Wilkinson
Hey Will, the previous commenters have latched onto what I think is the key passage here as well. I would find it really helpful if you could flesh out what you mean by "individual flourishing." I get that this is something to do with "being better off," but what does this entail? On what indices is it measured? If you've already written extensively about this maybe you could just point me to where those essays are located? Thanks a lot.
