in The #1 Value that Underlies Everything I Do on Finance Your Freedom on Finance Your Freedom
Judy: Yay, very well-put.

Dan: Money may bring a certain kind of freedom, but it does not bring "liberation" (Clay's word, not mine). In my experience this is common confusion and a trap. If you want "liberation" (a life of meaning, purpose, passion, and connection) then pursue passion and meaning, not money. Money is a by-product of passion, as demonstrated by Clay's success with this blog.

in If I Could Re-Murder My Day Job . . . on Finance Your Freedom
Clay,
the plain common-sense in the things you write sometimes just blows me away. NETWORKING is where it's at. I want to point out that this is the exact same advice offered by Richard Nelson Bolles in his bestseller series "What color is your parachute", and it's called the Informational Interview. Bolles is, to my mind, the grand-daddy of "Lifestyle Design" and was doing this when Timothy Ferriss was nothing but an idea in the mind of God :). I talk much more about this and related issues on my own site http://lifestyledesignschool.com.
Keep up the good work!

Ok, I am one of the "nay sayers" (sort of :). I certainly support Clay's decision to emphasize the "Freedom" (yay Clay) and also "enter the conversation that the readers are having". AND there are a few things that need to be said.
1)The psychologist Martin Seligman has proven in his research that happiness and money are COMPLETELY UNCORRELATED. No relationship, zip.
2)In my experience money is about 10% of the problem of freedom (or liberation). I work a 40 hour job that is far from inspiring to me, but I live a very rich, fulfilling and meaningful life. Why? Because my fundamental human needs are being met (need for connection and for contribution) and because I have a PLAN that I know I won't be working this job forever. Freedom is a self-created, moment-to-moment experience. IT DOES NOT REQUIRE ANYTHING
3)Clay himself didn't start out this site with the goal of making money (correct me if I'm wrong, Clay). He did it because it was his passion, he was inspired to write, it was a joyful and fulfilling process for him, and he's a damn good writer, presenting inspiring and thought-provoking pieces.
I write a lot more about this at http://lifestyledesignschool.com.

in The Ego Economy: Why the Freedom Economy Is Passing You By on Finance Your Freedom
Clay, your posts are always thought-provoking and vaguely disturbing (in a good way). Quick response

1)Blogging can have the goal of making money but also of spreading an important message. If a blog does not make money it doesn't mean its all "vanity" (not that I believe that is your meaning, I just wanted to make the observation)

2)The whole topic of making money online, ooof... has become the obsession of a generation of Americans. People need to keep in mind that the goal is personal fulfillment, pleasure, authentic meaning and passion, all of which can be achieved without a lot of money. That is what I teach and coach anyway.

Please keep on writing your thought-provoking articles and we are all trying to achieve the same thing here whether we agree on the process steps or not...

in Work from Home & Lifestyle Design Renegades: Chris McCombs on Finance Your Freedom
Hey Clay,

First of all I want to thank you for this great information and for inspiring me to start my own blog on similar issues to the ones that you talk about (www.manifesting.net).

You know my feelings about all this as we've had some email exchanges but I would like to comment also for the sake of your readers. You say you are going to write about "The logistics of liberation" (great title btw), but "liberation" is 10% about money and 90% a state of mind. People are becoming obsessed with "passive income businesses" (so-called "make money while you sleep") and this has spawned a whole class of "internet marketing gurus" who make more money than 99.9% of the businesses that are spawned by their hapless clients. I have a whole article about this on my blog:
http://manifesting.net/2008/09/introduction-to-...
and while I don't want to discourage anybody from making the attempt, my feedback is that the pursuit of money for the sake of freedom is, in most cases, not a winning cycle. Much better is to find something that you love to do on the internet and do it (and maybe if you're lucky you will able to monetize it); and failing that, just resolve to live your life as passionately, as meaningfully and openly as you can within your current contrainsts and see what develops. I am currently working a 40 hour job that does not enthrall me, but the financial security and stability that has resulted (after being broke for four years) has freed up an enormous amount of creative energy that has totally transformed my life.
