However there is an incredibly long way to go with this.

As an example, I arrived in school today to find that Google Docs is blocked for staff. I asked for it to be unblocked for staff and pupils (pushing my luck I know!) to be told that it was not possible as it is a 'security risk'. When pushed it was explained that as private pupil data could be copied onto GDocs and shared it was a risk. I was offered the opportunity to have the specific url of my spreadsheet unblocked after it had been vetted. This logic seems to wipe out the use of the entire read/write web in my school :( For anyone interested here is the sheet I am trying to share with my class, I think it's use is fairly self explanatory: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pi_Ik07y...

A small example of what we're up against!

Back to your idea, as others have said I think you need to start small. And above all I think that expectations on the volume of reporting by staff should be made as clear as is possible. Parent's will expect a lot otherwise and if limits are not set at the start you may run into trouble.

Best of luck and keep us updated!
Dan

Re: Plan, Tweet, Teach, Tweet, Learn, Smile

Great stuff Tom, I'm planning to send a tweet or two out next week with a link to a google form (as per some of your earlier work) for a data collection project. I think I will try and start something similar in my new school after Easter. Keep us updated on how it's going. I'm particularly interested how having one account for the whole school goes. At Secondary level I'm worried it could get 'too big', maybe one account per department might work for us. If the departments were set up in the network you could still tag stuff for:English for example.
Hmm, lots to think about - thanks!

Re: 3 Conversations: #1 del.icio.us

Anna, if you enter two words in the search box the default action is to bring up all the links that include BOTH tags. At present we plan to model a mini-lesson ourselves with staff as pupils, displaying as many board-skills as possible. We then intend to split staff into groups to plan a lesson together. I'm not sure whether to give them a lesson topic or to choose one themselves, the teachers will all teach different subjects. I like the idea of brainstorming it on bubbl.us and sharing ideas - thanks!
I'm also going to supply staff with a list of online resources that they can try out, flickr, bubbl.us etc etc. I'll post that up here when it's done.

Re: Do Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs) Work?

I'm still waiting on a list of attendees, once we have it we'll see best how to split into groups. I then left them some hints as to where to take their games to next.

Didn't get round to uploading their games, I'll try and do it when back in school.

Instructions I used are here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/5236778/Scratch-Maze-...

Re: Are half of us rubbish?

Thanks Doug, in reply:

1. It's a fair point ;) Ourselves and English are, for the time being at least, flavour of the month. We all know the reason for this at present. I think it's a shame so much emphasis (and lets be honest, funding) is placed on us at present to the detriment of other subjects.

2. Let's hope so!

I think it's interesting also that the 40% of lessons deemed 'satisfactory' are in fact being classified as not good enough. Another way to look at the statistics would be to say that despite the chronic shortages in many areas only 5% of teaching has been deemed 'unsatisfactory'. Perhaps Ofsted need a new word to describe that calibre of lessons?! Lies, damned lies and statistics :)

Re: Doing things differently…

Yes, both are great, I hope to make time to move this blog in the direction of discussing teaching rather than the tools, especially as my attempts to use web2.0 at school are constantly thwarted by our IT!

Re: Help! - A plea to bring sanity to my attempts to use the Web at school

I know, I don't want to get into a moan about the 'someones' on a public blog, I do have a good working relationship with the IT department and senior leadership, I just need to change their ways!

Re: Help! - A plea to bring sanity to my attempts to use the Web at school

Doug, I'm going to run into that argument, and I can see the point. How does one explain the benefits of putting stuff onto the whole web, not just inside the VLE? Especially when I haven't had the opportunity to extend any of my projects to include collaboration with people outside of our school. Principle is not reason enough I fear.

No gmail access, thank god for iPhone! When I get back from my hols in Feb with a new laptop from NYC I am tempted to jailbreak my iPhone and use the 3G with my personal laptop to bypass all filtering when in school.

Rob, you can indeed but it is at least seen to be auditable, as would google docs, but thats beside the point!

Thanks for your comments.

Re: Help! - A plea to bring sanity to my attempts to use the Web at school

great minds!

Re: Help! - A plea to bring sanity to my attempts to use the Web at school

I couldn't agree more Michelle.
