You mention Israel which is an excellent example, the country is well known for its technological innovation and startups, even though there is a very small population.

I was thinking about the entrepreneurship intensity. Having entrepreneurs, investors, engineers, etc. gathered, intensly exchanging in one place, working relentelessly on new projects is what's happenning in Silicon Valley or Israel. Here in Canada, technological entrepreneurship is scattered all around the country and it's difficult for an entrepreneur to find new ideas, implement them, and get (financial) support.

Hopefully, democamps, barcamps (thanks btw), and tech blogs have the power to change this.

but this is a wild guess too.

happy 2008!

Re: http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2009/01/thoughts-on-re.html

re: Asia

you should definetely have a look at Asia, esp. FB is overrated. I realized it was worthless when I was in college. It was fun the first two months when you get in touch again with lost friends from high school but I realized it's useless in itself.

But I guess bloggers and media just need something to talk about. Just before FB, it was twitter. There were the anti-twitter and the pro-twitter. before twitter, there was joost etc. The FB hype will die the day when another startup launches something somehow "interesting", then half bloggers will all write it's the big new thing, with the rest claiming it's stupid.

Re: Vista Is Good

But Vista is still a memory and CPU hog; makes PCs run 10 times slower compared to Ubuntu or XP.

Re: Bubble 2.0

many web apps are free because the marginal cost is nearly 0.

this is the law of the market. a web company cannot charge for accessing web pages because some smart teenager is going to offer a similar service for free.

Re: Coda, a Quick Review

you should compare it to textmate

by the way, I have added your blog to
http://montrealtechwatch.com/2007/04/montreal-b...

(i am building techmeme's equivalent for montreal - will be a ruby on rails app by the way)

Re: Montreal Tech Entrepreneur Breakfast

hi
welcome aboard fred.
yes the community is smaller than in the silicon valley, but we are doing things on our scale and there are lots to be proud of.
if you came to the next breakfast or to other events, you will meet other tech people in montreal

a la prochaine

Re: Scrum and XP from the Trenches

hey you should come next week at the web development book club to present this book. i am very interested and I think everyone would be too.

Re: The Pain of Tracking Conversations

sounds like a great idea for a local startup weekend :-)

Re: Why Desktop Programming Is So Unproductive?

even adobe is thinking about bringing photoshop to the web. when we will be there, there is no point to create desktop software.

Re: Favorite Web Apps in 2007

I am using Tumblr quite a lot. The subscribed users then get the updates. exactly how you described it.

but this is flawed. why? because when you have thousands of followers, the message has to be copied thousands times. imagine what happens when another user who has thousands of followers replies back. i'm sure even smtp would also choke on that -- it's not designed for users wanting to message thousands of addresses.

that's why i think identi.ca is not better or worse than twitter. but here's one thing: users can install it on their own servers helping thus the load to be distributed. which is a great architecture design.

note: i don't necessarily have the solution though.

Re: Safari: Didn’t get it at first, but now I do

for me, safari for windows is the worst product apple has released in a couple of years. it can't handle international characters like french, italian or dutch websites. Is it because of higher margins taken by carriers? is it because they are not efficient enough (old or outdated equipment)? is it because the territory is too big, forcing them to spend more on infrastructure compared to other countries? is it because the penetration and usage rates are so low that they have to make the existing customer base pay for the service?

is there a study on this ? say comparing rogers' operating costs with those of the likes of NTT Docomo (Japan) Orange (Europe)
anyone?

Re: Need out of your iPhone contract? $1100 please

i am ok with the limitations and price but this is just too much.

the thing is, we are all sure that Apple will release a 3rd generation iPhone in one year, and another one in 2 years etc. Which means people who would get the Rogers' iPhone will be stuck with a crappy device in the 3rd year - with everyone else in the world enjoying smthg else.

might just get the iPhone with just a voice plan and the standard 1 year contract. or better yet, prepaid.

Re: Bell jacking TXT messaging fees

I was in France before Montreal, and over there, people who receive calls on their mobile phones don't pay anything.

Everybody takes it for granted since you can't control who calls you. It might be one dear friends, but also a telemarketer or someone who misdialled.

this was the most natural of things until I landed in Canada and actually learned that you have to pay if someone calls you.

I strongly believe this practice is one of the main reasons why mobile phone penetration is much higher in North America, especially Canada, compared to Europe. Over there, everyone has a mobile phone, with many of my friends having a couple or three.

Re: You can’t help yourself, you will get an iPhone

i would have gotten one even if the plan was $200 per month.

the only thing that crosses the line for me is the 3-year contract.

so yeah, I'll get the iPhone, with a standard voice plan, for 1 year.

for data & web, I'll improvise

Re: Spectrum Auction: It’s Over, Final Results of Canada’s 2008 AWS Spectrum Auction

$4.25 is a hell lot of money

Re: Dear Rogers Webmaster, Please hear of firefox. k thx.

Bell Canada is also officially compatible with just internet explorer

Re: Fido’s funny new design

fail

I'm a fido customer and I can't relate to that. looks like a sketch or a parkd site.

Re: Still time to find Coal for Christmas? the Palm Centro

one positive point (compared to the iPhone or pearl): it has a qwerty keyboard

Re: What Web Frameworks Are Missing

credit card payements are tied to a merchant account in a bank, and each payement gateway has its own methods and frameworks.

but this is right.
