in What Web Frameworks Are Missing on pl patterns
credit card payements are tied to a merchant account in a bank, and each payement gateway has its own methods and frameworks.
but this is right. I envision a startup providing this kind of service, acting as a middle-man who'd ease the setup and make it transparent

Just read it, it's a very good wrap up of 2008. You're absolutely right, the Internet is still the most exciting technology around. The amount of services and innovations that grew on top of it is absolutely fantastic.

re: Asia
you should definetely have a look at Asia, esp. South Korea, China, Japan, and South-East Asia
Asia is where the growth is, especially for the Internet. Did you know that 8 of the top 20 "most connected" countries are now in Asia. I wrote a blog post about this from collected stats http://blog.iweb.com/en/2008/12/the-exponential...

in louisgray.com: 10 Predictions for 2009 In the World of Tech on louisgray.com
1. Twitter will introduce plans for businesses wanting a presence (pages, management of followers, stats)
2. Wave after wave of phones supporting Android, none of them as good as the iPhone but collectively a better offer for consumers
3. Microsoft buys a major stake in Facebook for very cheap
4. Yahoo fails, Yahoo Japan becomes independent
5. omnipresence of facebook, every platform out there supports Facebook Connect. It's the new Yahoo
6. SAI bought by new york times

I like your predictions, especially 1-4. I think #6 is unlikely, as
Blodget and SAI clearly dislike the NYT and look like they want it to
fail.

in Google Is Looking to Run Native Code on the Web on Fred Brunel
it would mean you could use the CPU to do things like user-generated movies :-) but having access at the same time to the web.

Fred Brunel
Well, we'll see how it can be used and what kind of API they provide. I've seen Quake running in the samples, so I guess there is a sort of "framebuffer" API.
We're also looking for a way to accelerate movie generation using the user CPU but it's not that easy. Even with a plugin there will be a lot of data to transfer to the client in order to render anything -- so for now, the best is to download an app.
We'll see what Google come up with.

in Change.gov is coming — and has Obama picked his CTO? on VentureBeat
I disagree.
Maybe you see what's happenning at popular crowd-sourced websites such as digg.com, with sensationalist stories; but downplaying a member's vote is not the way to go. People will feel alienated and won't participate.
What I've done (on http://techentreprise.com for instance) is a mix between crowd-source algorith + authorative editorial team. that is a core team which sets the original vision, but still accepts feedback and issues coming from all members.

because everyone (well bloggers) in the US says the american startups are busted? why put yourself in the same sinking ship?
(yeah ok, that was a bit harsh, but I'd really like people to pause a little and think before jumping on the bandwagon)

this seems to be unrelated, but also I think there should be more ways than just building on ads.

Unrelated?
The credit crisis means less money, it means less "risk taking" cash in the system. Compound this a US and European economy compressing and consumer spending drying up and you have Startups that need to address burn rates. What is the quickest way to reduce burn, spend less, therefore merge complementing technologies than building them out yourself...this is creative given this is not the norm in the start-up world.
Being creative means thinking out of the box. It means looking at both the Revenue and Cost lines. Merger addresses the cost equation. Revenue is addressed simply by either charging for your service or giving it away and making money through affiliate/advertising relationship e.g Ryan Air. If European and North American consumers are slowing down spending, and you have a web based business targeting these consumers (who have PC/Internet at home) what do you do? Go to China and India where your service is not relevant or your medium (the PC) is second to mobile? More likely you will be better off becoming commercial sooner by using less cash.
Cheers,

I know the current state of the Canadian tech sector and I know the primary market is the US
My point was that it should be diversified. So that when the US catches a cold, we have at least a minimal room for manoeuvring

Garage Canada also announced at one time an investment here
http://montrealtechwatch.com/2007/10/11/garage-...
it turned out that they didn't do a serious due diligence, turned out after the investment that the CEO frauded with false accounting books and figures.
also see here http://dawalibi.blogspot.com/ a few weeks ago, when I added the blog to MTW's blogroll, the author presented himself as a partner at GarageCanada and now it's just "VC whisperer"
this is sad, they used to sponsor democamps and barcamps.

i disagree, the sky is not falling. this post is more alarming than it should be, especially in the beginning. most canadian companies and banks have been conservative, compared to the US, and you can't just tell them to be even more conservative.

The idea that because our banks are stable we won't feel the punch is a fallacy. There has always been a tight squeeze on capital in Canada, and now it is going to get even tighter.
Perhaps you know something I don't, but I think we are in for some belt-tightening for at least a few years.
That said, the point of the post is that this is an opportunity for Canadian startups, which I cover at the bottom of the post.
