I'm currently reading Jacob Weisberg's The Bush Tragedy, in which it's noted that during Republican campaigns that he worked on, "there was a tendency of Rove's political opponents - and his personal enemies - to be victimized by rumours of homosexuality." For example, in 1994 in an election for the Supreme Court seat, University of Alabama Law School students were used "as unwitting conduits of rumors" to unseat a Democratic candidate who was characterized as a gay pedophile.

Reading Weisberg's and Jenning's accounts on the same day is truly disheartening. Whether the accusations are true or false, can we keep a candidate's sexuality out of politics and talk about issues that are important to the residents of New Mexico?
