Um, isn't this your deal MS? The fact that you have literally nowhere else to go and no means to get another apartment by yourself (at 34!) is pretty telling.

Also, "I'm used to being the only person I know who is not allowed to hurt others without consequence" - that is quite a martyr complex. In my experience most Americans assume our Thanksgiving is the same as theirs.

Regardless, surely anyone can see why she brought up the Canadian thing - it clarifies why this already pukey discussion is actually even more loathsome.

Re: STFU, Marrieds - “These people are Canadian, so I’m not sure why...

I don't really see why it's ignorant - November Thanksgiving = not a Canadian holiday. October Thanksgiving = not an American holiday. Therefore, N is talking about a holiday that doesn't exist for them.

I don't see anything in what Lea said that makes me think she doesn't know about Canadian vs. American Thanksgiving.

Re: Come & Live

No suggestions on new organizations, but I'll definitely check out Come & Live! I've met the guy before and he is very nice--often making jokes at his cousin's expense. The “Jayhawk People” were very gracious, the “eats” were yummy, and seeing the people enjoy the “United Plates of America” far outweighed my expectations. The visiting with old friends, meeting new ones warmed my heart, and the memory of the evening is PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!! The idea of every age enjoying the project was evidenced by watching a 95yr old lady as well as a toddler looking at it…….smiling. Bringing pleasure to others through your talent has to be the greatest motivator ever for future projects….and along with that, allows you to feel such a sense of accomplishment!

Re: Arizona

I agree!

Re: New Hampshire

classy!

Re: North Carolina

Now every time I look at NC I'm going to see cherry pie... haha! [Matthew 15:23]

This post is a travesty of the teachings you attempt to pervert.

Even if what you say is true, even if, you completely forget the story of the good Samaritan. Off the top of my head, a lawyer of the Torah asked Jesus to define what he meant by neighbor.

Jesus response was:
"A certain man fell to thieves while making a journey to Jericho. They stole his clothes, hurt him bad, and ran off. By chance, a priest passed him on the road, seeing the traveler hurt, and went on his way. A Levite passed him in the same way. But a Samaritan passed and saw this man. He wrapped his wounds, took him to an inn and payed the innkeeper to take care of him. Which of these three do you think was the traveler's neighbor?"

The lawyer replied, "The Samaritan that showed mercy, of course."

Jesus responded, "Go, and do likewise."

Whether or not the quote is a "mistranslation," as you put, matters not. Jesus taught us to love everyone as our neighbor.

Re: Full Zunar eclipse

Why does that 4% number sound familiar? I like reading manga, translated. Although it might be useful later on (it might, I don't know, I'm not there yet) -- you know, when you can actually read most necessary kanji, it might help to increase your reading speed / context comprehension -- otherwise, I have found manga completely useless as a learning aid so far. Although it's fun to notice how you pick up sentences you didn't before in anime, they're really just about as useless.

Re: RYBEL - om en tjockis som gillar kläder

Det ser faktiskt jävligt mycket bättre ut än mycket annat. This fast talking spanish real estate agent sold him a house
(Really a converted chicken coop), got him to sign all the documents, and remember this is an illiterate peasant, and then walked. Mario was doing okay until the
25th month when the payments kicked up. He was doing okay renting a place, now he's packing out ahead of foreclosure with wrecked credit. Was he stupid? sure,
but he's also a peasant.

2) Pretty much everybody who got a 110-125% mortgage. Lets be real, the only reason to sell a 110% mortgage is to increase the front fees to the broker.

3) Subprime mortgages in the inner city. These were people who should have been renters entirely.

I"m smart, I hate bankers, so, i'm okay, but, when i bought my house at closing, there were just these miracle junk fees. I raised hell and they took them off, but
for someone less savvy? they'd be screwed.

Re: As Pentagon chief, Cheney proposed big Pentagon cuts

cheney also ruthlessly slashed procurement,
he cancelled the Navy A-10 Attack bomber then when the
navy bucked him, he cancelled the A-6 aircraft right
off the carriers, he actually had them fly the airplanes
still in service to scrap fields where he had the wings
carved off with torches.

Why? with
Natural Gas powered Hybrid SUV's that would be a
big opportunity for Detroit.

USPS runs a nationwide fleet, it's big enough to justify
a decent well in dropping mail, and most of these are
available in right hand drive versions anyway
and if you made them dual fuel, you could manage through
any gas price spikes.

there are about 45000 zip codes, so figure 20 vehicles
per post office, and you are talking almost a million vehicles.
that's a decent production Not just another browser, which of course could be nice, why not. But there are more fundamental things like a local file manager which lets you store files you download from the web or transfer from the computer, such that you can read them, maybe attach them to an email you send, upload them to some webpage etc....
Why shouldn't all this be possible?? I just don't understand the reason for not implementing such a file system manager. And that's the thing which makes be a bit upset. I mean I like my iPhone, it's cool, there are hundreds of apps available for it, but these things are just limiting its usage.

Re: Warning: This Post Contains a Discussion of Public Reason, Which is Just a Theory

Will, you're mistaking opinion for science. Yes, there is a gap between the left and right's viewpoints. Yes, there is room for reasonable disagreement on a lot of things, from abortion to gun control to cultural mores.

But there is not room for such disagreement in a science classroom. The scientific method has led us to certain conclusions, and if people reject them they're indulging in intellectual cowardice, plain and simple. No "viewpoint" is being forced on these people -- it's their own damn viewpoint! They drive cars, take drugs and use electricity. They live and enjoy freedoms in a country formed upon enlightenment principles. If they want to move to Pennsylvania and start building furniture, they can be my guest. Otherwise it's time to admit that science works, secular discourse has gotten this country where it is, and you don't get to pick and choose elements of either to believe in unless you have very good reasons.

Instead, any caveat mentioned by scrupulous scientists about the bounds of induction is pounced upon by folks who deduce a false equivalence and conclude that, shucks, reasonable folk can disagree. Well, I suppose they can, but to do so in this case they have to throw away six or seven of the most important centuries of human intellectual progress. If people insist upon doing that I guess it's their prerogative, but they shouldn't expect the rest of us to accomodate their views and give them respect they don't deserve according to the standards of the intellectual framework that was developed and confirmed to work within our shared history.

If I wander off the visitor's tour at Cape Canaveral and telling the first person I meet that I have some interesting ideas about rocketry (I don't), should they indulge me? No! Doing so would be ridiculous.

American students are bad enough at science already, thank you very much. Until the Old Testament starts helping us build more powerful microprocessors or lifesaving drugs, it needs to be kept out of the lab.

Re: Warning: This Post Contains a Discussion of Public Reason, Which is Just a Theory

That one belief is mere opinion, while another is solid truth is not obviously relevant to the political point

Will, if that's true, then we are in serious trouble. I understand your point, and I think you're correctly characterizing the way this conflict is viewed by the religious right. But that doesn't mean we should indulge them.

We will never find an acceptable middle ground with the evangelical school board members. I think the only bloc genuinely in play here is the next generation. We should win the majority of those kids: science works, mysticism isn't logically consistent, and the city's more fun than the farm.

I don't think that granting a false equivalency in this argument for the sake of politics helps with the larger effort. It may seem like it will allow for a short-term resolution, but really it just makes the know-nothings' position seem more tenable to their kids.

I think we need to be clear and firm: science is true. There are benefits to a secular society. (It is worth repeating, in almost as loud a voice, that no, this doesn't mean you have to stop believing in God.)

I don't see what's to be gained politically by ceding ground on the fundamental point here. The way science is taught doesn't seem to have swung the last election, after all, although certainly the debate is a symptom of a contributing phenomenon. Are you arguing for a basic change in the left's dedication to secular humanism in order to appeal to fundamentalists? I agree that we need to meet America halfway on a lot of things, but this doesn't seem like one of them.

Re: Go Blue DS

Don't feel bad that you borked up the colors. It's the only part in the stack that's actually worth something, and is quite a remarkable software engineering achievement, all things considered. Still not as cool as the NT kernel (which never got, and still does not get the cred it deserves, for some weird reason), but definitely better than the well-tuned architectural abomination that powers OSX. Of course in the warped zealot's mind it's always been perfect since the 0.1 release, but in the real world they gradually improved it, and by now it's really pretty decent. It's already into a lot of hardware, and that will only skyrocket with UMPCs, Android and stuff. Together with Firefox and Apache, I'd put it in the 'rare example of good FOSS' bin.

The real pain starts as soon as you enter userland - abandon all hope, ye who dare. I chose the minimum partition size proposed, and the installer poof-crashed before the end, trashing the XP MBR in the process without installing GRUB (deleting the original boot sector long before installing yours is a stroke of genius, but I digress). I cursed, shrugged, recovered the XP install with another PC, and submitted the bug. After a few months of being ignored, a genius wrote to me that I should have included a log, and since I didn't he closed it. Basically he asked me to trash my system a second time on purpose. There are more secure, less obvious ways to disseminate information if the agent's computer can be counted on to run a client-side app (and obviously there are a lot of reasons why an agent would only use a secured agency computer for that sort of thing -- keyloggers and tampering with the certificate authorities being just two).

I suspect this is born of the CIA being used as a pretext for some phishing scams. This approach is pretty much all they can do about it: turn on SSL and issue a press release telling the public to look for the little lock in their browser whenever they think they're visiting cia.gov.

Re: Amazing Gains in Digital Storage Technology

I feel bad for storage researchers -- sounds like we're only counting milestones every three orders of magnitude. That's a pretty high bar.

This post is appropriate, since just yesterday the first HD-DVD appeared on BitTorrent, and with it the next frontier in consumer storage needs. Still, HD video only represents a one OOM (or so) increase in size. We're pretty close to getting our home theaters' bandwidth to match our optic nerves'. Once that's accomplished I can't think of the next major consumer bandwidth application that we're likely to see -- until immersive 3D environments and/or Smell-O-Vision arrive, anyway. Either way, it seems likely that the current paradigm of magnetic storage technology is going to be able to be pushed beyond consumer needs for a lengthy period.

Re: Video Games and Movies without Copyright?

Tim & Adam:

I think you're taking me to have a stronger opposition to copyright than I actually have. Yes, I'm very optimistic about technology lowering barriers to entry in various creative fields. But I still believe in the need for copyright. I think that we need to reform it to shorten its term, deal with orphan works and expand fair use, but none of those changes really apply to this argument.

My point was that even under the current copyright regime, piracy is going to exert a transformative effect on these industries — but that this doesn't mean we're not going to be able to watch movies or play games. Here's the paragraph that followed the ones Tim quoted:

Piracy's going to continue to be effective. It's also going to become much more accessible to people without soldering irons and Linux servers. The industry will respond by chasing ad revenue; by adjusting the cost:benefit ratio for piracy by making smaller, cheaper games; and by continuing to move toward service-based offerings (e.g. subscription fees in MMORPGs). For Madden devotees, this is bad news. For those of us bored by the industry's addiction to big titles and consequent inability to innovate, it's not a bad thing at all.

Adam, I assure you that I do understand what goes into game development. And I expect many big franchises like Madden to continue to thrive. But piracy and increased ease of distribution will change the sorts of games that are most profitable, and that'll change what sorts of games are made — in the same way that Hollywood stopped making sprawling historical epics and extravagant musicals (although digital effects have made the former cheap enough to produce once again). You can already see this happening in the runaway success of many smaller games on Xbox Live Arcade.

If you're dead-set on the enormous franchises Adam cites, then yeah, I think you'll be disappointed to find that you have a smaller selection of them in the future (relative to the overall size of the market, anyway). But there's no reason to think that the current trend in game budgets is sustainable as the predominant model for the industry — people like John Carmack and J Allard have acknowledged as much. So have the folks at Nintendo, whose latest console represents a conscious retreat from the graphics arms race. I'm looking forward to an era of smaller, cheaper, riskier games; I can understand that others might not. But I think it's going to happen either way.

Re: Why Does FCC Spending Keep Growing?

I'm not sure I understand your argument. As you might guess, Lowe is more sympathetic to the idea of applying IP to nature than you or I might be inclined to be, but it's definitely a thoughtful take on the subject and an interesting read.

Re: The Technology Liberation Front » Archive » Explaining Our Knee-Jerk Opposition to Wireless Regulation

Thanks for the response, Tim. I should offer a couple of clarifications: you're right, one of the actions that freeconference.com is asking its customers to pursue is contacting the FCC. And I'm actually not at all convinced that the carriers blocked this number maliciously -- I think it's just as plausible that it's a screwup of some sort. Finally, I suspect you're right that the FCC has the power to correct the problem (although obviously having to beg your customers to entreat a regulatory agency is a slightly crazy thing for a business to have to do).

I don't really want more FCC regulation, either. My point (which I could have made more explicitly) was simply that the cell phone market in the US is working *terribly*, and it's silly to pretend otherwise. When mistakes like this incident arise the market can't select against the companies perpetrating them, as Steve points out.

I get frustrated when I read arguments against intervention in this arena that hinge on allowing the market to function naturally. It seems clear to me that it's not working very efficiently right now, and that capital costs are too high for new players to enter the market. There are plenty of egregious examples: did you know that you can't offer an SMS-based service that uses obscenity (including clinical references to anatomy)? Or that it isn't possible to use premium SMS to raise money for charity in the US? Or that if you have a commercial premium SMS application, you'll be lucky to be able to collect even half of the revenue it generates? Or that if you encourage your customers to use the SMS-to-email gateway functionality that they've bought from their carrier to use your service, you'll get blocked and charged a toll if you have even mild success? And that's just in the text-messaging space.

I agree that ad-hoc regulation isn't the way to solve these problems. But they are problems, and they're not going to be resolved until customers are able to exert pressure on the carriers more often than once every 12 or 24 months. I don't know any way to make that happen other than regulatory intervention.

Re: Patents vs. the Rule of Law

It certainly seems like the chemical formula of a drug would offer an good way to draw the clear lines that are essential for any genuine property right.

It's not just the formula, though. It's frequently specific steps in the synthesis, as well.

At any rate, the vast profitability of the pharmaceutical industry relative to other patent-using fields strongly implies to me that the balance between innovation-spurring patent protection and commons-benefiting public domain releases may be more out of whack than usual in this arena.

Re: Just a Number

Thanks for the link, Tim, and the thoughtful commentary. I'm not sure I agree with all of it, though.

First, I worry about any kind of length-based criteria for granting copyright. Are visual works going to be treated as bitmaps or vector art? If the latter, some minimalist artists are going to be in trouble. Will poets start worrying about increasing the average entropy of their stanzas?

Second, I think this quote gets at the root of the problem with Felten's argument:

...asserting ownership of a 16-byte number is still dramatically different than asserting ownership over a thousand-byte (text), million-byte (music), or billion-byte (movies) number.

I think the confusion comes from the implication that the AACS LA is asserting ownership -- it isn't. You're still perfectly welcome to use those numbers for other purposes. You just aren't allowed to redistribute them for a specific purpose that victimizes the AACS LA. The analogy I drew in Felten's comments is to a neighborhood association asking a store to restrict the sale of spray paint to minors. It's not asserting ownership over the paint, just restricting its distribution for a particular use.

With that said, I think that the idea of suppressing information because of what *could* be done with it is inherently problematic, and that the DMCA is bad policy. But I don't think the number-ownership argument makes a lot of sense.

Re: Just a Number

I would argue that most of the current distribution of the key in question is NOT for circumvention purposes, but rather as a statement of opinion about such distribution. Just wanted to add that I think this underscores the need for metered bandwidth. The current "all you can eat (but not really)" system creates perverse incentives for the ISPs. To maximize profitability they need to provide the absolute minimum amount of service that their customers will tolerate while still paying the one-size-fits-all rate. That's not a good situation for consumers.

ISPs should be *happy* when people use (and pay for) more of their network services -- those are the conditions under which competition and innovation will flourish.

Re: Encrypt Your Stuff, People

Doug: I've seen this story several times with different ISPs, but here's the first thing that Google turned up:

Rogers Fights BitTorrent by Throttling All Encrypted Transfers

Needless to say, telecommuting VPN users are not pleased by this development.

MikeT raises an interesting point, although of course filesharing means that metered bandwidth would really just intensify the already-present incentive for locking down your wifi. I'd be sorry to see the availability of open APs decline, but one can imagine projects like NoCatAuth or La Fonera offering functionality that would require payment for high-traffic use while allowing lighter-weight apps like VoIP or web access through. La Fonera in particular already has a system in place to encourage this sort of altruism. And Busboys & Poets, a coffeeshop not too far from my house, already offers free-bandwidth-to-a-point, with the limit determined by total transfer volume (each user gets a daily allotment).

Re: The Technology Liberation Front » Archive » TCP/IP “More or Less by Fiat?”

A great point, and more than I knew about TCP/IP's birth, to be sure. Still, if you saw improvements, then my congratulations.

I would suggest, though (as I see others have), that people facing the same problem have a look at simply gzipping their text-based output at the webserver level. Since the action's probably happening on the webhead either way, it's unlikely to be much more costly in CPU terms, and it's even simpler to implement than your solution (it typically just takes a line or two in .htaccess if you're using Apache). Great work!

Dan, I'm going have to dig up that Bazin essay that talks about the "amalgam" created by professional and non-professonal acting.

Re: Atheros: driver ath9k open source

Sarebbe bello se funzionassero pure...

Re: Redfin Secures Another $12M in Financing

I wanted to respond to the comment by April. If you really believe in a 'right to choose', why do realtors protect access to information about listings so carefully? Why are you being sued by the DOJ? The MLS is a closed, uncompetitive marketplace that only benefits agents. Try and imagine if stocks were bought and sold like houses. The SEC would never allow the games you play.

The bottom line is realtors will do *anything* to protect their undeserved 6% commission.

Re: TV Recap: Big Brother 11 - Week 4 Nominations

Great article. Kelly and Kendra are bland and boring. Without sounding mean, Kendra isn't attractive enough to warrant much much press attention. And her interview style is mostly pre-rehearsed answers and distractingly poor elocution. She doesn't seem very intersting, funny or charming - which really is what the apprenticeship is all about. Publicity and wooing the press. Bill does it well. It's junk like this that drives me to the liquor store in the first place. Tetra Paks are here to save us because they weigh less, so less climate-changing diesel fuel is required to lug them across the ocean from Australia. Dear God, where to start?

First, even if you can get the drunkards off their lazy asses to join the mere quarter of the North American population that recycles, few places recycle Tetra Paks. Second, the places that say they recycle Tetra Paks are liars. What does "re" mean? It means again. Can a Tetra Pak be made into another Tetra Pak? No. Tetra Paks are seven incomprehensibly thin layers of paper, plastic and aluminum. The poor suckers who try to recycle them use giant blenders to mush the paper pulp off the plastic and metal, then they need to separate the plastic from the metal. What idiot thought this would be a better idea than washing a bottle and refilling it?

But the biggest problem is actually the same problem -- jackasses. When did it become okay to destroy the climate and kill 50-90 per cent of living species so we could drink imported wine? How did it become possible for us to think we could have whatever we wanted wherever we wanted it? Do you really want to try to look your children in the eye and explain that they have to eat jellyfish gumbo because you couldn't resist that lovely imported shiraz?

Re: @ MidemNet: Google's Eun On Music: Some Labels Too Defensive

Classic google, screwing others for their benefit while not letting anybody get a hair from them. well done warner, I'm looking to see all others follow them so that goog does not build an empire of wealth based on others content.

Re: @ Dealmakers Summit: Chris Saridakis, Chief Digital Officer, Gannett; Focus On Demographics

What a big bag of wind!

Re: SpinVox Paying Staff In Stock To Save On Costs

blah blah

Re: Nasri Breaks His Leg: – Do We Need More? - Eduardo, Arshavin & Fabregas Possess Greater Footballing IQ Than Any Other Players In The League

Why not console yourself about having the three cleverest players and forget non of them physical presence, the loss of Adebuymore has taken out all the physical presence in the front end of the pitch, unless Bendtnar can come good this season and Le boss buys a beast of a DM (I don't see him buying another defender).Adebayor was useless last season and he obviously didn't care, I'm not backing the guy but over 20 matches as a long striker because the midfield was incapable of matching other teams will demoralise anyone, you would understand if you played football. Remember Drogba plays as a lone stricker but theres always two wing forwards working with him lets not forget the ubber physical and solid 3 midfielders behind them .this is surely another trophy-less season. bottom line is Arsenal have become the morden day Ajax, only without the trophies and maybe if the fans were not riding Adebuymore's back so much, the board would not have a reason to cash in on him, like they do every year. We have become a selling club and are content to be in the top 4, its a business no doubt but when all the board is not ambitious the team will die because the fans will leave. Its not wenger who does not want to buy players, the board say one thing and do the opposite.

Re: Roman Pavlyuchenko to Arsenal for £6mil? - Video of Player

you people make me laugh, Roman Pavlyuchenko = sqaureroot(adebayor's talent), but yet you fools are excited.

Re: Ricky Gervais Live at LA’s Kodak Theatre July 11 and 12

fucking joke. he just played MSG in New York and did the SAME gig word for word he did a year ago. Bigger screen, higher DPI, better haptic feedback, additional sensors and maybe who knows, a hardware keyboard, a stylus or whatever will be trendy in a few years.

And because of all these restrictions that are currently seen as a feature of the current iPhone, Apple will have to fight an uphill battle to evolve.

Android took a risky bet by being very flexible, but it will pay off in the future, and Gartner seems to agree with that analysis.

Let's talk again in a couple of years.

Re: 40K EDITORIAL: To much of a good thing?

Know your army and play it often.
