in The New York Times Asks: “Would You Pay to Read Us Online?” on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
There's a major difference between the WSJ and NYT. Serious stock investors view the WSJ's modest annual fee as an investment that earns itself back many times over by providing them immediate access to market moving news. While NYT has a decent business section, far fewer people rely on NYT for information and advice on financial matters. And while the most ardent newsies and political wonks will pay $5 a month for access to the NYT, a good majority of its readers will decide they can do without it. The NYT's many, many missteps, and compromised objectivity, in recent years assure this will be so.

good point re: WSJ vs NYT .... judging from tweets though, it sounds like at least some would pay for the crossword puzzle, hehe

in Wikia Kills its Google Killer on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Wales caught lightning in a bottle with Wikipedia by harnessing the idealistic tendencies of a global army of contributors. This idealism was absent with Wikia Search, and, unlike with Mahalo, FindingDulcinea (www.FindingDulcinea.com) and other human-powered search alternatives, there was no core of paid contributors to create a critical mass of content, upon which others may have built.
