in Android netbooks on their way, likely by 2010 on VentureBeat
Netbooks are proving very popular due to the simple fact that 80% of users only need 20% of the features.. As long as there is messaging (gTalk), music (amazon MP3 in the USA), photos (picasaweb), video (youtube) and Office Apps (google Docs).. most users will be happy.

Yes, you will always be getting people saying that I need it to run PhotoShop etc.. no problems, Adobe either port it over or say, "Sorry you need a more powerful PC"
Techzeit PCs and laptps have for too long been caught in the MS-induced upward spiral of bloat and pwower-consumption. Sure, modern PCs and can run much faster than older machines, but that is because the software they use requires them too. I don't think Excel offers me any more usable functionality than I was getting from Lotus 1-2-3 20 years ago.

Bring me a lean, fast, basic OS that I can use to access the web and do some basic office stuff on, and I'l be happy. Oh, and smaller footprint OS also mean lower power consumption.
Conexion Heck, even most Netbooks can run Photoshop 7 well, and the feature difference between that and CS4 is not very significant for most users.

in Whispers of the G2 Android phone grow louder on VentureBeat
I firmly believe that there will be a whole range of Android Phones in 2009, so a Jan 26th release date isn't that unbelievable. Remember, Android is the OS.. its not like iPhone. Look at the Apple product range. They love to keep it simple, with only a few products.

in Users Fight Back Against the New Facebook on AllFacebook
totally in favour.. much cleaner. Now when I go to a friends page, I dont see rubbish apps anymore, as I never interact with the boxs page.

Nick - as you know there is a little link right at the box, that says "Back to the old version".. lets hope FB keeps that there for a while, and doesn't add any new features there!

Nick

Like Stephen says, you could change the home drive on your mac. Alterantively you could change the drive on your PC.. Just create /Macintosh HD/Users/nick/Documents/ on the PC.. go to the main My Documents link.. Right Click > properties > change this to /Macintosh HD/Users/nick/Documents

Once you have clicked Apply, and then OK, it will ask if you want to move everything from My Documents to the new folder.. Yep!

To be fair, its the first thing I do. Create new folder in C:\ and call it data. Its the new My Documents. Easy peasy file name stucture.

in The Social Platform Race to My Contact List on Social Times
The company that manages to sync contact lists PERFECTLY.. (not you plaxo) will be top of my list. Why Facebook couldnt get together with the email providers, and provide a secure API that syncs my google / hotmail / yahoo / outlook emails together, so that they all have the right info is beyond me.

I guess someone somewhere, is trying to hold onto all of that information as they see it as theres. To be fair, its not. My friends are MY friends and not facebooks. Make it easy for me FB and I will convince everyone I know to get on it, so that we all have a decent connection.

It cant be that difficult..

Looking good!! Even though TC just mentioned your a bit of a Sell Out, I think the advert you have works well...

Using FF though the Photos and about, appear below the submit comment button.. Perhaps its my 125% DPI setting on WinXP (UPDATE -- yep, quick check and it went back up)

Any chance of making the template "Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License" for other bloggers???

in Facebook Newsfeed Returns, No More Ratings on AllFacebook
I used it.. it was always a red cross if it was an application spamming my newsfeed. In all honesty, I only use Facebook for events, photos, and keeping up with friends (old and new)

I dont want the applications bugging me. Apparently they say that you can change these settings in your NewsFeed Preference Page. Well thats real easy to find.. and once you do, there is nothing there about Applications bugging me!

BTW even if you put "Less stories about this friend" .. they still come up occasionally.

Robert.

See if Disqus can do commenting for you as you wish. It would only let me use disqus for NEW comments only, on blogs without them .. but I am sure for someone like you they could find a way around it ;)

That way you can also bring your comments into FriendFeed.

Worth a try anyway.. BTW I'm nothing to do with disqus... just like what they do

in Writing Effective Blog Posts on Chris Brogan
One thing I am trying to implement in my blog (t'InterWebs) is an 'Executive Summary' that is a maximum of 255 characters. If someone adds it to del.icio.us then they can cut 'n' paste into the summary box and then add tags they think will be useful!

At the moment it's a work in progress ;)

Chris.. How about your wiki user page?? and Talk page?? some people make a lot of edits and help out with the wikipedia project..

What about ClaimID or OpenID 'about me' RSS Feeds? Yes it can be an RSS feed.. but make it look different. If you can say THIS IS ABOUT ME! or I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.. sometimes people may do a search for you online, and find stuff that is not you.

Also FF should have an editable profile page! Not too much, but some info you could add. To be fair, it really should point to your Blogs About page... but still maybe a useful feature

in Anatomy Of A Perfect Post on How To Split An Atom
Great Article.. only discovered your article through Louis Gray Shared Feed on google Reader.

I love how you should attract attention to your post.. got a couple of other points to add:

An article now should be constructed with an executive summary (less than 100 words, preferably less than 255 charcaters), and links to directly related information. If the entire article if covering a range of different topics, then it should be split into different posts. The entire Article length should not be more than two pages of A4. Otherwise it's rambling and should be split across more than one article.

This would allow the author to put his main point across sufficiently, with the reader having understanding.

sbspalding That's a really interesting suggestions. Do you find people are willing to click through to read the entire thing.

Better question. Does it matter?

in Is Education The Answer? on The Marketing Technology Blog
While I am not aware of how the US organises and provides it education system, I have some understanding of the UK system. It sucks..

Not going to go into a rant into politics, but our current government (http://www.labour.org.uk/education) want 50% of 18 year olds to achieve a degree at university (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widening_participa...) ... The problem with this?? It lowers the value of a degree.

As such a degree is becoming worthless, and its more important to achieve a credible result, so that you can study a PhD or masters.

The purpose of a degree is to give the ability to take information from many sources, and turn that into understanding. Its not what you learn, but how you do it.

Douglas Karr Jez,

That's an outstanding point. If everyone in the country got their degree - then a degree becomes the bare minimum again. Perhaps jobs that don't require a degree will require one when everyone has one.

in Attention thieves; keeping you from living a “FOOCamp life?” on Scobleizer
Great article... I realised a long time ago that t'interwebs was taking up far too much of my time. I know I have a slightly addictive nature, but I thought being addicted to information can't be too bad.. its not the worse addiction after all!

Anyway, finding something new out gives me a great feeling, and with RSS feeds I find loads of new things out everyday. But its really distracting. So I had to amend this habit, so it wasnt too time consuming!

Now I still can't actually cull the feeds, but using some shared feeds and ranking my sites ; Primary / Secondary / tertiary / personal & work, means I can spend a little free time reading my PRIMARY feed, a little work time reading my WORK and FRIENDS feed, and mark the rest as read.

gReader gives me the ability to search, so if I need to find something its my third stop - after two pages of Google & del.icio.us

I still spend a couple of hours a day on this, but now I dont feel as guilty, and actually get on with life!

As for the others, I just let gReader pick up a PERSONAL feed, and can scan what my my friends are doing, and go to the site if I need to respond.

Anyway... Like I said at the beginning "great article" .. I know it is when you can spend some time writing a comment, as it struck you in its own way. Thanks.

in 7 Tips for Fighting Information Overload (Plus: Competition Winners) on The Blog of Author Tim Ferriss
Hi Tim!

Its always good to find new ways to beat Information Overload... cutting the RSS feed seems to be the only way!

Anyway is there a reason why you have two themes in every post? Why not just have two posts?
I like some of your posts, enough to want to del.icio.us them, but generally dont as the second half was not informative enough..

MAybe its for us to read something slightly different after your post... that qould be quite clever!

###

This is something I've been fighting with and will poll all readers soon. I guess I feel that I don't want to clutter people's RSS or e-mail with separate posts just to make announcements, so I append them at the end of posts (a la "(Plus: Competition Winners)"). Thank you for reminding me to poll everyone!

in ASK: How do I hire a community manager? on Community Guy
Just discovered your website from a link from ChrisBrogan.com ... some great ideas! My company is looking at increasing our social media.. so I am going to point some other people here!

Some great ideas... liked the idea from someone else. "how do I become a Community Manager?" ...

One final thing is.... if I search on wikipedia for a Community Manager. I get a housing manager. Whats another term?

in Texting In Purchases on A VC
a great idea! its such an easy thing to set up on any online account as well.. Set up with your mobile number, Amazon / Apple send a 5 digit short-code to you, and from then on you can send requests in! A quick response with what you asked for... and its all done!

Looking at the comments, a few people mention jott (only available in USA) and mobile web browsing... I believe mobile phones and simple texting are ubiquitious and much more useful to the majority of people...

in Facebook Killer Feature Arrives on AllFacebook
Whilst I am already on FB and don't care for LinkedIn , I totally agree with @1 Jason "Show various Groups different profiles" with what could be the killer feature:

*Group A sees all (great Friends)
*Group B sees all less Group A, (good friends)
*Group C and D see only C or D (family and work)

Also FB should also make certain Apps seen by certain groups!

From what the blog at Facebook says, this 'could' be a feature we see next year!

in Should Facebook Allow Aliases? on AllFacebook
This is pretty important for me.

I use Jez XXX and I also have a work FB with Jeremy XXX ... My friends all know me as Jez and it is a recognised shortened version of Jeremy.

I set up the work FB account as I realised that letting work colleagues know what I was up to at the weekend was a bit of a no no. I don't really use it and want to get rid of it soon in favour of aliases.

Also didn't Facebook just change some back end coding that means they can now provide an individual user ID for everyone on earth and all of there pets? :)

Lets hope this means that when they bring in the much needed groups of friends feature that we could have:

Jez XXX - Friends
The most wonderful Jez XXX - great friends!
Jeremy XXX - work
J XXX - Family

Would really help things out!

in 7,200 Google Reader lockins on Scobleizer
Its definitely the best way for a linkblog, but wouldn't it be good for you to specify an address that you can share your link blog? something like www.XXX.com/linkblog ...

It must only be a setting? or a tweak?

Anyway I use Google Reader because I like the Google product set, and feel that they are the only company going into the future that can look after what I want them to look after.. mail / calendar / search / feed reader and hopefully a decent address book and to do will be coming out soon!
