However, I don't understand how hiring a 50 year old woman will bring younger demos, if that's indeed what CBS wants for its Nightly News. Two things have occurred regarding Couric: The Today show decided to add an additional hour and CBS decided to "soften" its news. Judging by all CBS shows including prime time, sports and news, the eye appears to have very little interest in lowering its record aging audience and is happy just having the largest one, no matter how old they are.

Re: Overnight Results 10/26: Moonlight Feels Right?

While CBS can "think" about what to do, NBC has got to be heading to repeats to stem the 40% drop from "Deal" to "Lights". I am very pleased that a show as quirky as this has found the audience that it did.

This is the kind of show that will NEVER be a huge hit. But it fits in a niche that is underserved by the procedural-bloated network programming these days. ABC deserves alot of credit for trying new things over all other broadcast nets.

Re: Top Cable Nov 26-Dec 2, NFL & Tin Man

The NFL Network rating is nothing short of amazing!

Re: Chuck: Renew or Cancel? The quality is strong, but more importantly, this is a fast-moving show that keeps building on background week after week. I started watching "Dirty Sexy Money" but stopped after the "big-picture" story has slowed to a crawl.

If the same good-humor and action of "Chuck" was in "Bionic Women", NBC would have a couple of hits this season.

Re: Nielsen Ratings Sun Feb 17: CBS Losing Badly With Younger Audiences

I guess I'm confused by your surprise. Of course CBS is losing in the 18-49 battle. In any chart I've seen since I can remember, CBS has always had the oldest skewing audience. Furthermore, CBS has the fewest "unscripted" shows of any net, 5 by my count (8 on ABC, 7 on NBC, and 7 on FOX). This is a rough guess based on shows featured on each networks web site, but I think it is evident that CBS is very dependent on scripted shows and will do very well when they come back from the strike.

Re: Nielsen Ratings Sun Feb 17: CBS Losing Badly With Younger Audiences

Yes Robert, I agree that CBS does do very well with its scripted shows. That is why, I believe, it is not doing well with the strike hurting those shows.

I was thinking that, if CBS REALLY wanted to promote to a younger audience, we'd see promos on Comedy Central, MTV, VH1 and the other Viacom networks. Even though CBS and Viacom split, Sumner Redstone still head honcho for both.

I'm convinced that CBS is playing the "high tide raises all boats" programming card trying for as many eyeballs as possible, regardless of age.

Re: Nielsen Ratings Sun Feb 17: CBS Losing Badly With Younger Audiences

Here's part of Robert Bianco's USAToday chat session today about the networks. I'd share he has a bit of a differing opinion:

"Waynesville, MO: What is up with NBC? It is amazing how much they have fallen from the glory days of Cosby Show/Cheers/Friends/early-ER. They seem to put junk on the air. I saw that there was American Gladiators and Knight Rider on last night. It this the 90's still. (There are some exceptions - 30 Rock, FNL, Scrubs, Office) Even the CW tries harder than this. Which network's higher-ups would you say are doing a good job?

Robert Bianco: Really, Waynesville - I have to thank you. If you hadn't mentioned "Knight Rider," which NBC aired without making available for review, I was going to have to find some way to work it in. I don't know when I've seen a more amateurish, inept heap of cynical junk on a major network. I'd call it a two-hour commercial, but that's an insult to commercials - most of which are better acted and constructed than this clunker. As for those two, poor actors stuck in the car for most of the movie: You can buy lox and bagels with more chemistry and more expressions. As for the question: CBS is widely regarded as the best-run network, with ABC and Fox vying for second. ABC is better at drama than comedy, and some of the decision-making, or makers, lean toward the erratic. Fox benefits and suffers from its beyond-control reality division. As for NBC - it's not just the worst managed network at the moment. It may have the worst management I've ever seen in all my years on the job."

Re: Nielsen Ratings Sun Feb 17: CBS Losing Badly With Younger Audiences

I go back to the strike and that it hurt CBS the most. There were negligible cable networks, no FOX or CW or Univision.

No internet and that short time between Atari and Nintendo where video games were on the decline and VCRs were still in the VHS vs. Beta format war and gaining a stronghold in households.

Now with population of the US increasing from 232 million to todays 302 million, an increase of 30%, the number of outlets for our daily outlets has increased from maybe 12 stations at the high end in 1982 to a couple hundred today, maybe 200% more. With those percentages, American Idol could be said to do well with 10 rating relative to today's competition.

Re: Nielsen Ratings Tue, April 8: Secret Talents of The Stars? I think it would fair well with the Pushing Daisies crowd (a much better show).

ABC is obviously trying very hard to find an audience for this show and I hope it does...but I'm not holding my breath.

Meanwhile NBC fans are again getting desperate if they see The Office as a "huge" success while finishing 3rd overall and 2nd in the demo to a true hit in CSI. For NBC, demos are enough to cheer for their only prime time success.

Re: Nielsen Ratings Thur, April 10: American Idol Back on Top With Surprise Boot

Yes, yes Robert, we all know how you feel about CBS. I forgive you your narrow minded view of The Office.

While the Office puts in a decent half hour once a week, CSI puts in twice that on Thursdays so CBS can sell its "slightly" higher demo for twice as long.

Furthermore, while The Peacock tries to toss in a few "extended" Office hours throughout the season, CSI has franchised 2 additional hours each week which also rake in the bucks.

While there is no denying that the 18-49s are the most important advertising, total eyes aren't chopped liver. The Office would have to get like a 20 in the demo to match the CSIs each week.

A hollow victory, indeed.

Re: Final Thursday Numbers: The Office vs. CSI - They’re Both Great, But..

Here is a link from Advertising Age showing ad rates for this season's shows. The only name on last weeks list was "Samantha Who?"

Now this may or may not be significant, but I find it interesting that shows then often looked to a big name (Mary Tyler More, Lucy, Walt Disney) or one lead character (Marcus Welby, Mannix, Ironside) to identify the show with.

Today these shows are "CSI" or "ER" or "Desperate Housewives"...which often split the stories among the many characters on the show. That's about a dozen shows total including what you mentioned.

Oddly enought, names are used all over the networks in 2 key areas: nightly news and late night television. PTI was created before ATH. However, since ATH is on earlier, the topics of the day are discussed over and over before PTI comes on. The scheduling is based on general work schedules of course and I understand that. If someone gets out of work at 5, they'll be home for PTI, if 4:30, then ATH.

It isn't only ATH since "Rome is Burning" and "First and 10" preceed that as well. Let's face it, the P in ESPN has become "personalities".

My schedule often has me at home during weekdays so this is when I watch these shows. Between 5-7 my viewing schedule is "It Takes a Thief" and "Mad Money" on CNBC. This is one time I have to go along with NBC though and try to dump some older shows to bring in something that might last 4 or 5 years instead of 1 or 2.

Thursday night is the one shot NBC seems to have to keep the demo rating and dumping Scrubs and ER could give newer shows a fighting chance.

Re: Nielsen Ratings for May 1: Where Are The TV Viewers Going?

Robert,

Well you could show those numbers then ;)

Less snarkily, how does Nielsen measure video games on HUT/PUT? A majority of the viewers have high incomes and advertisers will no doubt pay more to reach this very specific audience.

I'm not sure Friday is the best measurement for CNBC as well since the market is closed for the weekend when the prime time shows run. I would think it might perform better earlier in the week.

Now as a hypothesis to the other news networks. I would suggest that "conservative" viewers would be highly likely to watch FNC with more "liberal" viewers might be split between CNN and MSNBC. Yet the morning and evening news shows are so far below the competition it makes me wonder why they just don't try something new. A tie for this first-run vs. the other nets' repeats is a very costly sister-kiss. Office or L&O reruns might have garnered similar numbers with much less outlay.

Re: Daytime Ratings for June 23-27

To be fair, you might want to retitle your weekly "daytime ratings" as soap ratings since they do not include The Price Is Right, The View or hours 3 and 4 of Today.

Re: Wheel of Fortune Watched By 9.7 Million

And now Wheel is going to add a chance at a million bucks next season. Curious how he wll translate to the "show". Hope he hosts SNL next year. Wayne Journal Gazette (well, it's what I found first):

"More homes were tuned in to Monday night’s Home Run Derby than have ever watched the event. The contest on ESPN was seen by nearly 6.2 million households, breaking the record of more than 5.7 million set in 1999, the network said Tuesday.

The 6.4 rating was up 25 percent from last year’s 5.1. It was the most-viewed non-NFL program on ESPN since the Florida State-Miami football game Sept. 5, 2006."

The real problem with daily ratings is the networks have become so insignificant that they no longer represent America's viewing habits.

Re: Top ABC Primetime Shows, July 7-13

"Dancing With The Stars Shows Off to 18.4 Million"

Those pesky sub-heads.

Re: Late Night TV Ratings - July 28 - August 1, 2008

I think there's a good chance Letterman will beat Conan before Ferguson even gets the chair.
