The unenlightened masses must be protected from themselves else they tip over the apple cart of smooth functioning society. The most Brahmin among us can be unaffected by nudity in a movie, but then we are not interested in such. An interest in such is the mark that one will be negatively affected by it. All the vices lead to the decay of society, for what are likely very bio-mechanistic brain/body causes and effects and have nothing to do with any ideas about "progress" or religion/anti-religion. If we accept that we are bio-mechanisims we must repress the vices. If we accept that we have souls and gods who prefer good behavior, then we must avoid the vices.

The gifitng of the nobel prize to Pres. Obama is just one more sign of the breakdown of rationality and reason in the West due to Post-Modern relativism and addiction to material pleasures. Let us hope this event marks a low point for the West and things get better from here on. Hope? Begin by taking a step in the right direction. Example and prediction: based on how the maoists came to power in Nepal, via blind murder and violence, it is not likely there will be much improvement in the quality of life there. One evil, though a noble one, has been replaced by another, this one ignoble. On the other hand, by the merciless annihilation of the LTTE in Sri Lanka, and the merciful developement occuring now, in the near future the Tamils will enjoy a much higher quality of life than the Nepalese. I was wondering if anyone has found or made a patch that allows SIms of the same sex get married or sleep together (not that I'm wanting to see my sims fool around in the vibrating bed). If you want to take the positions:

- God doesn't speak to me, thus He does not speak to anyone.

- I didn't see the builder of the house, thus he doesn't exist, and he has no intelligence that is superior to mine.

- I won't believe the Bible because I didn't meet any of the writers, thus the Bible is false and the writers are are only legends.

- The ancient writers that support as fact the existence of God, the truth of the Bible, that Jesus is God (who became Man) who functioned as the "Extinguisher of guilt", that disciples were martyred, are all decieved, but the other writers who characterize them as charlatans, are pillars of truth and understanding, and cannot suffer deception.

- The planets and solar systems are facts, but the deduction that an intelligence beyond man's created them is an unreasonable conclusion, an assertion.

- The fluctuating tilt of the earth can't be a purposeful design, but the work of a messy God, a really inept Devine engineer.

- That the creation of these planet and star systems are the work of the "cat-warriors from the Pleiades". We need to just accept these cats as being of the type that I am familiar with, accept that they are capable of systematic war, and that they were born of the seven daughters of Atlas, or . . . they mysteriously evolved from a source we have yet to name, simultaneously from a cluster of stars, that we have named Pleiades.

It does puzzle me though, why these cat-warriors have never claimed this system of planets and stars as their own creation. In fact, only One has claimed this to be His creation. I would think the "cat-warriors from the Pleiades" would want to set Him straight.

I bet Jesus would love to have that level of faith used to follow HIm, but alas you trust in cats, (reportedly born of women) who make war, and who create the universe, though you have never seen these creatures . . . who may actually be from a cluster of stars. And you say Christianity is a farce.

- Mankind somehow allows a Deity to exist, though we die and He is eternal. It seems it is the eternal One who allows this foolishness of men.

- That it must be hypothecation if a Deity exists who does not bother to explain His origin to my satisfaction. What nerve, that this Deity dare not satisfy me as to how and why He exists. I am due an explanation since I allow Him to exist. BTW man still cannot explain the origin of light, but it exists, whether the how and why is explained to us or not, or whether the explanation satisfies us or not.

Gee, I wonder who created those electrons and protons and caused the phenomena of imbalance, where the rushing of electons to balance their number with the number of protons would create the energy that we call electricity. Must be the "big bang" theory, or the "cat-warriors from the Pleiades".

- That it makes no sense that One would pay in full, the price to create an exclusive sphere of acceptance, to retain the right that He alone chooses those included into that sphere, where they would enjoy benefits exclusive to that domain, contract (covenant) with the chosen to adhere to certain policies, that
when they did not adhere would forfeit many of the exclusive benefits until they recant their actions and apply for reinstatement (ask for forgiveness) to regain those lost benefits. (They will have the contract (covenant) eternally, which cannot be forfeited once entered.)

If men can make golf courses and yacht clubs exclusive, that once lifetime memberships were purchased, they could not be forced to forfeit, even though the club put up the membership money, I don't see what is so hard to understand about what Jesus did for His chosen.

If the member breaks the rules he agreed to, then the clause in his membership can be enforced that permits him to be suspended until a fine is paid, or until a time requirement is met for reinstatement. So what is the big deal if Jesus requires from His chosen, an apology and a request for forgiveness for the chosen to be reinstated? The offender still does not forfeit his eternal residence in Heaven, just many of his benefits temporarily on earth, until he does what is required to be reinstated.

Finally, thank you for permitting me this discourse. Yet, I have discovered a definite sadness within, that such intelligent, articulate people are so sold-out to Satan, having great faith in one that cannot save.

I have asked the Father if He would consider choosing at least some of you for salvation. I hope some of you ask Him for that blessing.

With all due respect, this is my disclaimer. You posted this, and I really enjoy reading your blog, so please don't be offended if I weigh in on old slights of the past. I am a new reader and I would like to comment on this.

I have been in a few IRF (Interracial friendships) and sadly what your husband said to you, I have had said to me countless of times "Robert, do you still love me" I find that harsh, cruel, and somewhat retarded. It comes from a place that says, black people are so immature socially and emotionally that one "dust up" will render all love obsolete.

I admire you for staying and working out your problems. But I do think for your husband to say something as juvenile as that, well, it makes me wonder. Maybe his motives were to shut up down. Get you to be silent. Move on. And then reel you back in with the "give people the benefit of the doubt."

Your husband has the benefit of the doubt to be "gracious," black people don't. And lets be real, if you did not get seated, and then lied too, why should you give anyone in that establishment the benefit of any doubt. Sigh.

Hopefully, I can join in on this conversation and not make a fool of myself. I think the problem stems from a conservative mentality that states, "pull yourself up by your boot straps." This is flawed, and it's non-sense. I do believe that American Blacks are more prone to notice "code language" and "slights" that non-American Blacks do not. For example, when a white person is overly "playful" we address. Having fun is ok, but being disrespectful is not. If we are to be idle then we let whomever take control of situations and black people can't have that happen. I do think that American Blacks have a reason to be "funny" or "different." Our sisters and brothers in other cultures are not reminded they are different everyday.

I think the biggest problem is about "comfort." For example, I suffered a spinal-cord injury when I was 13. At 21, I walk with a cane. White people have said things to me, (and yea I laughed) that they would not say to someone who was more "threatening" and hence, the "comfort." But I don't think that White people in America are bad. They just find ways to shine the light of shame on America Blacks and they do so by using non-America Blacks.

As coming from southern Germany I have to contradict and say that Aldi is much better here than Lidl (not only regarding the stuff-policy) and it's even quite comfy to shop there compared to Lidl or Plus, which is esp. for the grocery really disgusting.
On the other hand people here tend to go more to little markets with fresh & regional products.
An astonishing experience from France: supermarkets for deep-frozen products only: Picard – les surgelés.

Each day that I'm alive on this planet, my hatred for organized religion grows stronger and stronger. I'm an ex-Catholic who didn't believe as a child and don't believe as I'm heading towards 50. This world would be a better place if we all just believed that someone or something has created life but it has no bearing on our lives here. We are on our own and woshiping some imaginary friend is not the asnwer and not why we're here. This is just common sense to me and I don't see how people don't see this. I saw it at the age of 8. Grow up religious fanatics, we are not that important in the scheme of things..We matter while we'er here and alive for those lives we touch, but a supreme being didn't create us for it to be worshiped the entire time we alive..Think about it...

That's where your post starts and ends.

I personally know victims from this case and to a man all of them tell the same story. They all met this person in their early teens and they have all known since their 16th birthday (AL. Victims) what this man is all about. That's just the tip of the iceberg as far as what other things they have in common. There is evidence that shows he invested years in calculating his moves. This behavior amounts to nothing more than premeditated terror by someone you can supposedly trust. This man scientifically stalked children from an early age, cultivated relationships with their families and betrayed them in front of everyone's face. He is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Slandering his victims and denying the accusations with indignation to the bitter end. God can choose to forgive him but his consequences will be continued to be bore on this earth.

The shed blood of the executed Jesus was imputed by God to suffice as if it were the shed blood of all guilty men and women whom God chose to save from Hell.

The execution of Jesus only applies to saving the 'chosen' from Hell. It saves none of the chosen from earthly punishment. The thief on the cross was granted Paradise by Jesus, but was still executed.

Contrary to today's popular teaching, God alone calls, chooses, elects all whom He decides to save. Man, woman do not choose God. John 6:44, 65

Thus, those who are uncalled, unchosen, unelected will serve Satan in Hell, as they now serve him on earth.

Many say they are Christian, but they are not. Mt 7:13-14, 22-23

Similarly, many say they are atheists and are not. Ro 1:19-20

Regarding forgiveness when the debt has already been paid, Christ's execution had many purposes. Another purpose was to establish a "blood" covenant with the 'chosen'. Many will try to enter this covenant of vows and baptism, but again God makes the rules, and has decided to give His Spirit only to the 'chosen'. Mt 22:14

You DO NOT belong to Christ and you have NO PLACE in His Kingdom, if His Spirit is not living in your body and leading your heart. Rom 8:9

Thus, the death of Christ DOES NOT substitute for your spiritual death, and it is certain you will be condemned to eternal Hell by God's Law. Mt 13:41-42

When one of the 'chosen' sins, he is out of covenant with Christ. He must first grant forgiveness to others before he asks for forgiveness from God for his own sin. Mt 6:14-15

Christ does not shed blood again. He never gets out of covenant with His chosen.

BTW, why would God lie to you? Men lie because of fear or to gain. What does God fear, and what does He not already have?

It seems folly to me to put such stock in the atheist opinions of men who die, but have trouble putting stock in Jesus, who as God, has certain knowledge. Jn 1:1-3, 14

After all, He came down from Heaven (Jn 6:38), was executed, resurrected, seen by hundreds (1 Cor 15:6), returned to Heaven, and is alive today.

Why would so many disciples endure torture and death to substantiate a lie?

I doubt any 'proof' would suffice for you, yet you believe in magnetic power because you see its results, but don't see its lines of force.

MySQL and Apache? I assume you are trying to install on Linux? What distro and what version? Unfortunately, books on Open Source software can get out of date fast. But also, if you just want to get up and going fast, you should consider using the precompiled packages for the distro of Linux you are using. Let me know a little more and I might be able to stear you in the right direction.

I get paid to do this stuff actually. But being an admin is definitly not working in solitude for very long!

I have always thought Taylor had the least ability singing wise of say the top 6 finalists. But his attitude seems to have carried him. Kate has one of the best voices but she seldom nails a performance. But I think she might have taken more criticism than anyone else. I don't see her talking back that much, I guess I didn't notice it that much. I thought she did pretty good with taking a lot of criticism. But I will be surprised if she wins. I think the definition you offer is a great start, although I'm not sure quite how "happy" we all are really (should this be part of the actal definition?)

I think bloggers have a role to play, but maybe less directly than you are suggesting. A journalist, with access to existing audiences of readers programmed to respond to their suggestions, such as those of key magazines and newspapers, is very different from a blogger who in general is trying to build a small community of like-minded readers and, hopefully, contributors.

I would suggest that there are two important things missing here:

1. Blogging is SUPPOSED to be interactive; whether readers respond or not, they can. Well written blogs tend to engender loyalty and, through that, a discussion. Well written articles might make people think, but they do not have the chance to disuss.

2. Blogging's effect will be felt not just in the ability of one or more to influence sales, but the cumulative opportunity they offer for more people to feel comfortable exploring wines. It is much harder to measure of course, but I think this is important and it could have an effect on total sales. My own blog tries to explore the "Wine Conversation" (or lack of it) happening around the world but mainly in the UK.

I look forward to seeing how this develops and contributing what I can. I already feel a blog post coming on ... !

At the risk of pre-empting your post, my view is:

Yes, but it is not enough to target one or two blogs as you might do with the traditional press. The point is you have to find a way to reach a number of bloggers who collectively can create the buzz the winery is looking for. That means offering them something they want to bother talking about - not just a good wine, but a good story that is easy to tell and each can interpret in their own way (matching with food, value for money, wine tourism, regional, etc.)

One way to get that story out, in turn, is for them to set up their own blogs.

I'm not sure if it is limited to Rioja, but certainly you can get a "sorbete" in a number of places I've been to in Logroño and it is a bit like a slushy. You could make the sorbet with the cava itself, but it is nicer to pour the cava over the lemon sorbet and get the slushy mix which is very refreshing.

There is such a thing as red txakoli apparently, something I discovered when touring Bilbao on the way to Rioja with a particular wine expert. When we asked the barman about it he gave it the ultimate insult - "it would ruin a good coke!"

Good idea, but lots of work!

I happen to know that you will be visiting Dinastia Vivanco on your trip to Rioja. They have 222 varietals (4 plants of each) from across the world planted in the Bacchus Garden in front of the museum. You may need to come back in September and October if you want to take photos of each bunch, but you are more than welcome. Also, these list most known aliases for each plant, so might help with checking against other regions of Spain and the world.

You might even have a word with the Dinastia Vivanco Foundation as this sounds right up their street as a project to support the spread of wine culture (they could be encouraged to send you the materials above so you don't have to re-type them for a start!)

erm, glad to say that my other half has a similar world-view to mine and therefore no such peer-pressure applies - we like to try local delicacies but try not to go too far off-beam. We did stray too far once on a trip to Burgundy. Have you tried <a href="andouillettes? " target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andouillette">andouillettes? I quote a small paragraph from the article:

"French andouillette, on the other hand, is an acquired taste and can be an interesting challenge even for adventurous eaters who don't object to the taste or aroma of feces."

I must point out that the term "faeces" or anything related, was not found on the dishes description on the menu when we ordered it. Although I managed to eat most of mine, I can reflect back on the occasion and recall the sort of aromas they refer to.

good question. I have also said on many occasions that only bloggers post comments - partly to draw traffic and goodwill from being seen on the other blog (of course I am not doing this here, only participating in this conversation), but partly because they are most familiar with how & why to do this.

In fact I pointed this out the other night on my blog when a particular post created a bit of a stir on a subject of contemporary note.

I am looking for a template for my blog that incorporates comments into the post a lot more and does not simply treat them as afterthoughts or notes in the margin. Have you come across anything like this? Can you imagine how it might work? I don't want to turn a blog into a forum exactly, but there must be some way to bring the comments more into view?

Anyway, nice having a conversation with you :)

went out for a (very rare) date with my wife last Saturday

we went to a local "gastropub" (the best one from 2007, apparently) that happened to have a very nice wine list

I ate a pig's head roullade and ostrich steak, so needed something unusual for the pairing

I chose Tilenus Crianza 2003 from Bierzo - a lovely expression of Mencia that had just the right baked fruit taste for the meat, but excellent acidity for the side dishes too. Lovely! I don't know much about Mencia, Bierzo or Tilenus, so it was a good (and lucky) discovery

I think these are very valid points. I have been thinking much the same as Marco in his second point. I almost always skip over the tasting element of tasting notes, looking for the general information on the winery and its business instead. The tasting is irrelevant if I cannot find the wine in this market.

I REALLY like the idea of <a href="Domaine547" target="_blank">http://domaine547.com/">Domaine547where she puts together packs for bloggers and based on bloggers reviews. I think that has real potential for the future. If there could be some way to get hold of the wines reviewed around the world and order a selection based on that, I'd buy it in a snap.

Of course shipping laws and costs currently make this almost impossible, but yet ...

However, I am a blogger and not the target of the question. I am sure others out there have their own thoughts.

Unfortunately I have not tried it, and I suspect many others out there who have heard of this, like me, have not yet felt inclined to do so, so maybe we can comment on why not too?

I'll be honest and say I never felt I was the target. I'm not sure I'd say it was for "women" (such plans are doomed anyway), but I'm guessing that the marketing plan's consumer segmentation would have been "anyone who does not already drink port".

My big problem with this would be that I decided long ago that there are only so many alcohol units I can, or should, consume. I love wine, and so why waste those units on spirits, beers and high alcohol beverages when I don't need to? There will always be an occasion where these are appropriate (like an occasional G&T, refreshing pint or rich after dinner port), but what is the occasion for pink port? It is too alcoholic (even if it was integrated) for a refreshing summer drink - it'll put me to sleep in no time. In any case, there are plenty of non fortified wines that meet that need better. Is it supposed to replace other ports as an after-dinner drink? I don't think so.

This is a neat idea looking for customers, not a solution to an existing demand.

Natürlich hat jede Person das Recht, Vorkehrungen im Einklang mit ihrem persönlichen Glauben zu treffen. Wie dem auch sei: Im Sinne dessen, wer die Person einmal war, sollte man sie mit der entsprechenden Würde behandeln.

Aristoteles' Vorstellung von der Seele ist in diesem Zusammenhang übrigens sehr aktuell: Sie Seele eines Organismus ist die Summe seiner Fähigkeiten, die durch seine besondere Beschaffenheit entstehen. Der Mensch ist eine eintigartige Integration von Substanz und Form, die ihm vielfältige Vermögen verleiht, z.B. das Vermögen der Nahrungsaufnahme, der Wahrnehmung, des Strebens, der Ortsbewegung und des Denkens.

"Wenn wir etwas anführen wollen, dass jeder Art von Seele gemeinsam ist, dann wird es dies sein, dass sie die erste Verwirklichung eines natürlichen organischen Körpers ist." (Aristoteles)

"Etwas hat eine Seele, wenn es ein natürlicher organischer Körper ist, der tatsächlich fähig ist zu funktionieren." (Erklärung der A. Vorstellung von J. Barnes in Aristoteles - Eine Einführung, Reclam)

Unter diesem Aspekt läßt sich auch der Fall von Frau Schivao betrachten. Da ich kein Mediziner bin, kann ich Ihnen keine Belge für ihren genauen physiologischen und psychologischen Zustand vorlegen. Aber es wird hier doch einsichtig, dass in dem Maße, in dem die gesunde Integration der organischen Funktionen nicht mehr vorhanden ist, die Seele, die Persönlichkeit mit beeinträchtigt werden.

Ich halte die Erklärung des Aristoteles für sehr wissenschftlich, überhaupt nicht abiträr, und ebensowenig für "menschenverachtend" - ganz im Gegenteil! Dies gilt meiner Ansicht nach ebensosehr für die Aussagen von Robert Tracinski.

Der Pontifikator wiederholt praktisch die Lehre von der Seele, die ich geschildert habe, dann fügt er ihr eine christliche Bedeutung bei - und in dem Maße wird das Ganze verwaschen.

Ich bin nicht religiös, der wahre Ansatz einer Kritik von mit ist also ein sehr grundlegender; eine Argumentation über so etwas Spezifisches wie die Moral der Euthanasie etc. würde zwangsläufig zu Diskussionen über Grundsatzfragen führen, wo ich vermutlich häufig anderer Meinung sein werde als sie.

Das sollten sie wissen, damit sie meine Argumente richtig einschätzen können. Die Seite, auf die sie ihr Tackback bezogen haben, ist sehr stark von einer atheistischen Philosophie, dem Objektivismus von Ayn Rand, geprägt. Ich wollte sie mit meinem Kommentar vor allem auf die Möglichkeit aufmerksam machen, dass atheistisch, naturwissenschaftlich fundierte Sichtweisen ein sehr positives Menschenbild haben können. The problem is that many people think that gas will ALWAYS remain at $3 a gallon. What will they say when it will reach 6 or 8 buck a gallon ? In 20 years from now you will have to sell your house to pay for the same fuel tank.
20 years ago, you had not many people driving cars in India, China, Eastern Europe and the ex-USSR. Not to think other emerging markets. Today these nations want the same ever-shrinking quantity of petrol. Now think about having a little wind turbine or solar panels that will give you FREE energy for your vehicule, that is why Teslamotors has a future. "Normal humans" will accept the fact that in order to commute they have to plug-in their cars. "$uper humans" will likely pay $600 000.00 to fill up their cars and show off how much "in a hurry" they are.

@meikah: Just a point of clarification, what I meant was that if an organisation has an ISO9001 compliant management system installed then there is a requirement for continuous improvement to be demonstrated within this framework. For me six sigma provides a means of evaluating how the ISO9001 system is improving business processes; if an ISO9001 system completely assured quality within a company then there would be no need for six sigma. Clearly it does not so there is a need for the six sigma process. Does this make sense?

As for Chipotle being the "only chain the would even consider their voice," that just doesn't bare out in reality. Chipotle has refused to so much as talk to the CIW on the phone, while Yum! Brands (parent company of KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Long John Silvers and A&W;) and McDonald's (Chipotle's former owner)--the two largest fast-food companies in the world--have (as a result of hard-fought campaigns) signed legally-binding agreements with the CIW.

I had a similar problem. Without explanation, Windows XP professional SP1 stopped running commands like ipconfig from the console window (but still runs them directly from Start | Run). The result of PATH at the cmd prompt listed system variables not expanded, e.g. "Path = %systemroot%\System32..." instead of "Path = c:\Windows\System32..." I repaired this problem by removing all expandable variables from PATH, replacing them by their expanded value (i.e. I hardcoded the path), commands then were able to be ran from the cmd window. Then I tried to bring back the initial value of PATH, restoring the expandable variables to see if the problem would come back. I don't know why, but the problem wasn't anymore. At the cmd prompt, the Path was then listed as "Path = c:\Windows\System32..." and commands like ipconfig were ok!!

Perhpas the type of the variable in the registry has been change by the system to expandable string with the insertion of new expandable strings in the PATH variable. I don't know what it had been before. I just reached Kevin explanation when I was searching for the detail of the expansion mechanism to understand the reasons of my problem.

(To change the PATH value, I right-clicked My Computer and then selected Advanced and Environment Variables. Then I used the Edit button to change the appropriate line in the System list.)

I had a Reserve YN3 who lived about 3 hours away (in good weather) who wanted to leave her drill weekend at 2pm because of a snow/ice storm. The LT told her that a lot of people had to drive in this weather so essentially she couldn't be a special case. Luckily she made it home o.k. but it took her almost 6 hours. It has stuck with me now for over 1 year. That was poor leadership in my opinion.

I work for a large organization, and we're all drowning. When returning from a week off, one coworker had 1000 unread messages. It passed being ridiculous a long time ago.

Here, as with most other organizations, the real barriers to change seem to be our old friends: fear and inertia. One of the problems is so many organizational decision-makers entered the business world in the 1970s and 1980s.

Back then, work was much more adversarial than it is today. Being a jerk was a good way to protect your turf and get ahead. Collaboration meant allowing yourself to be vulnerable with a potential adversary.

Thankfully, we're no longer in the Dark Ages, but many mid- and upper-level managers still feel this way about collaboration and openness. That is, one's organizational power is expressed as control. Giving up control means giving up power.

We have a small Wiki that's been growing in size and popularity over the past two years. Now that it's becoming popular (and therefore better and more useful), management is considering locking it down to "prevent vandalism".

More academic research is needed in this area to demonstrate to management the value of letting go.

I've always kind of been a "Grudzielanek Booster" and, especially considering his recent surgery, he's made some serious adjustments. He had said in the postgame that he felt he had been too impatient with Schilling in the past. Adding that to Schil's general spottiness, it was easy for Grudzie to sit back and wait for it. If Beckett attacks like we know he can and if Matsuzaka attacks like we think he does, then Grudzielanek might not get another hit this series.

Meche did a fantastic job of setting up his pitches, but what most impressed me was the speed with which he settled down. That it appeared Manny particularly but also Papi and Lugo were kind of not concentrating on "this game, right now" just made it seem more pronounced. Once he got into his rhythm, that was that. The Sox were in general (again, Lugo in particular) way too anxious about everything, if two of Meche's ks had become BBs, then we might be talking about a profoundly different outcome. Papi and Tek swung at some bad pitches.

The bullpen is so much better already this year. I can very easily ignore Okajima's first pitch for the time being, just no more first pitch fastballs for him, k?

The Sox are not nearly that bad. I loved Drew's patience and I think I can expect to see increased patience from Lugo, Papi, Manny, and Coco. I hope to see increased patience from Tek. Pedroia and Youk both looked good but, again, over-anxiousness got the better of them.

The Royals looked good. Grudzielanek, Pena, Sweeney all looked improved and in the case of pena, he might well flourish given the opportunity for a full season. Their worst-in-the-bigs pen even looked better, although it's difficult to imagine a situation where it could get worse. So, the Sox are not nearly as bad and the Royals, yes them, might actually be something like that good.

I think "Per Second" is Wheat's best album. I also think it's one of the best pop albums of the past ten years. "Medeiros" and "Hope and Adams" have their moments, but Wheat seems to be holding back on those discs, as if making grand pop songs like they do on "Per Second" would be a form of selling out, so they opted to just keep it kinda quiet and not change the melodies or tempos too much from song to song. I like the variety on "Per Second" a lot more, but then I've always liked bands who step up to the plate and deliver spectacular singles that SHOULD be played on the radio even if radio stations don't see it that way. I have a feeling the new album will be a big disappointment for fans like myself who fell in love with Wheat via "Per Second."

I like most everything about Ubuntu but it's color scheme. One of the first things I do is change the theme for the boot, usplash, and login screens. There is a problem changing the usplash screen in 8.10. If you try to replace the default usplash screen, then all you get is text instead of a different uslpash screen.

In the Synaptic Manager I would like to have a button that would the search field.

Once upon a time schools opened after Labor Day and commenced at the end of May before Memorial Day. Kids used to have a real Summer for three months to have fun and be kids.

Perhaps our School Boards need to understand that it's not how much time a student spend in the classroom but what happens during the time the student is in the classroom.

Our educational system in Indiana has been reduced to teaching students HOW to pass a test. Real education has taken a back seat to ISTEP.

Oddly enough, many of us were able to survive going to school for 9 months and still be able to go on to college and gras school which in turn allowed us to get good jobs. All without air conditioning.

Year round school and starting school during the heat death days of August will achieve nothing.

Congratulations - I just got my Reg and didn't pass - 64. My first part ever taken, I'm 41 and have finally decided to get my letters after almost 20 years in start-up accounting. I am taking this one as a learning experience.

I'm studying for FAR and am MUCH more familiar with the material. I think I'll try Yaegar cram for REG next time.

Glad to see you get it. For years, lots of us have taken this mission seriously only to be characterized as fire chasers, etc. There is a greater motivation to what we do. Most of our EDS professionsals are not here by accident but feel called to this unique ministry, jsut as you are to yours. We get to minister to people on possibly teh worst time in their life. We take the Founders challenge to "do seomething" seriously and belive totaly that you can't sepak to a man about his soul while he is hungry and has nowhere to sleep.

To many times the upper brass see us as a sideline or stepchild program of the organization, when in fact we are one of the only ministries still taking it to the streets. Do your best to help the other leaders understand why we should be doing this and doing it right.

If we are to live up to our new branding, then we can Do the Most Good if we only commit to it Not in an on again off again fashion as we have done in the past. Help us achieve the support and commitrment of top leadership that is equal to that of our many volunteers who have sacrificially served in this and many other disasters.

God will continue to bless our efforts if we continue to do it with commiment and excellence and make it the priority it deserves to be. The public's financial support of EDS proves they believe in us wqhen it comes to this ministry.

current one is better than any of those. i've been around some time but still find myself admiring its calm simplicity and effectiveness from time to time. its also got the benefit of not being too elaborate/styled (speaking of indie).

the new ones might look better on first sight because they're ~new and got more details, but think about it, i bet you've seen those styles somewhere already (maybe even years ago) and more detail is definitely going to get boring fast.

i'd vote for the current one.

Why was the EPIC contest judged by someone in business of producing leather shoes in far away countries like Poland, Portugal and China? That is not a green business at all! I read some negative comments on the internet regarding greenpan. I also found a lot of good ones. I bought a black set when they newly arrived in C&B. They worked fine... and they still do. It's a heavy set of pans that I bought. Don't remember the name of the range anymore. For me, the fact that they do not use those harmful chemicals is the main point why I would buy them again.

Very simple - keeping someone from walking down the stairs into a sliding drawer at night because it was left open. The raised cap on the upper stairs is a safety feature to be used anytime any drawer is open.

The biggest problem with drawers in stairs is safety and liability. For instance, there are regulations regarding stair design and evenness of tread and riser because people need stairs to be predictable. A stair which changes configuration presents unique issues.

I like drawers in stairs. I also never want to hurt myself because I stepped into a drawer.

The last couple of comments are correct, the concept of the free-piston engine is not new. The technology was developed and utilized heavily in the early oil industry to run sucker rods off of a large fly wheel. These engines burned the natural gas that seeped from the nearby oil wells. I find the warped codes pretty hard to read - I think that sometimes it goes a bit over the score?

I'm just starting to get spam on my guestbook - I pre-check all entries at the moment, but I'm thinking of putting a simple graphic code checker in (easy to read) and writing a filter script that will automatically change any anchor tags entered to point to different domains, like crayola.com or disney.com, etc. That will give visitors a bit of fun before I delete the offending entries.

Not good if you're getting a *lot* of spam comments, right enough.

I got the security code wrong on the first attempt... way to hard for me to read :(...

Jack Layton debated pretty well; the thing I liked was when he suggested that either Harper didn't care or is incompetent.

Elizabeth May has excellent debating skills although I wouldn't vote for a party whose name implies their focus is on 1 thing and one thing only. Do you magine the "Economy Party", or the "Health-Care Party"?

Gilles Duceppe was also a good debater. Not much to say here.

Overall, that debate was pretty useless considering most of the candidates had memorized answers to the questions. We know damn well none of them will do what they say they will. By now, most Canadians (I hope) realize that they're full of crap.

So, I still have no idea for what idiot I should vote for. What about you?

The Kur'an was written thousands of years ago so I think it may be normal that there are some questionable contents in there.But you're implying they changed their mentality, when this is totally wrong. Had they changed their mentality, you wouldn't see women veiling themselves with hijabs and burqas. You wouldn't see news of stonings of women on TV. And all that in the name of their god.

And you mentioned the Bible. Like I said before, the old testament is obsolete; no one follows that. and even if they did, there is no indication that you have to be violent (what you do see are stories where god is being not nice) whereas the kur'an actually preaches violence like the quotes say it

Not that I'm defending or attacking any religion...I don't believe I have the right to tell them what to believe in.When their beliefs involve hating/wishing death for you, I think you should be concerned.

The point is, our Western society is clearly blinded by our idea of freedom, being open to everything and political correctness.

These concepts are truly laudable concepts; however, one must keep in mind that openness and political correctness is pretty useless when dealing with people who:

1) claim to be peaceful (which I actually believe. I think most Muslims aren't violent), but on the other hand, won't accept any criticism of their religion

2) will only shout foul when something as silly as cartoons being published but never say a word when terrorist acts happen, when women are stoned or when a dude is killed because he chose another religion over Islam, in their countries.

I still don't fathom how peaceful Muslims still can call themselves that after reading their own holy book and listening to the speeches of Muslim clerics.

2:89 "the curse of Allah is on disbelievers"

2:90 "for disbelievers is a shameful doom."

2:98 "Allah (Himself) is an enemy to the disbelievers."

2:104 "For disbelievers is a painful doom."

2:216 "Warfare is ordained for you, though it is hateful unto you"

And those are just a few quotes from chapter 2.

Those who are out of touch with the religion are actually those who do not perform acts of violence.

There is no such thing as: "terrorists have hijacked the religion" like President Bush suggested. The terrorists merely followed the teachings of Islam.. That's the scary part.

I remember at some point, I even got into a debate on a bus with some who was trying to convince an old lady how Islam promises heaven for everyone before I reminded him the verse in the Kur'an that says that women were promised hell [chapter 70, verse 1-30].

It's really frustrating to see people defend this "religion of peace" when they have no idea what they're talking about.

I think we have a problem here in our civilized countries. This problem is called "political correctness".

People would openly criticize Christianity (it has recently become some sort of sport) or Judaism. But, as soon as you even mention Islam, you're labeled islamophobe.

Of course they're islamophobe! We should all be too considering all the crap that's written in the Kur'an.

The only reason why there are "moderate muslims" is simply because they do not actually follow the teaching of the Kur'an, which proscribe, among other things, death for non-believers.

And you can't say that all religions are the same. No Christian/Jew/Buddhist/.. could do horrific violent acts and point to their holy book to justify their acts. In contrast, any idiot could point to any verse in the Kur'an and find violence (not just a description of violent acts like is sometimes found in the Old Testament, but violence prescription). Even the few non-violent quotes of the Kur'an were actually abrogated by the "prophet" and replaced by the "verses of the sword".

The fact that people fear for their lives when they dare criticize Islam shows how peaceful of a religion it is.

Although one might think that Obama would be made worse off in the campaign because of his skin color, I don't think this is still the case in 2008.

In fact, it seems to me that the media doesn't screw over Obama as much as the other candidates (especially Clinton) because they don't want to enter this grey area where racist claims are easily put forward.

Now, as much as we might want to be neutral about the fact that Obama is African-American, Clinton is a women, we just can't and that will influence people's decision at the ballot.

I think the reason why that's happening is because the candidates don't stress enough who they are and what they stand for. All they give us is a whole load of crap that's too good to be true and unrealistic expectations about how they're going to change America when, in fact, they couldn't care less.

I agree. Canada is not as good as it seems, and not only in relation with politics.

Health Care System
A few days ago, I saw a tv show about doctors who migrated to Canada only to be told they would have to pass many tests to become doctors in Canada. Even when they do pass those tests, they weren't allowed to practice in Canada, for no given reason. And then, they say we have a shortage of doctors.

Environment
In my opinion, Canada is as bad (if not worse) than the United States in terms of environment. Each year, 19.2 tonnes of CO2 are produced per person in Canada. Only one tonne more is produced in the US. In France, they only use 6.8 tonnes. While in Europe, the CO2 has been going down, in Canada it's been increasing ridiculously. Yes, we signed the Kioto report, but we're not even respecting the damn thing. At least, the US didn't hypocritically sign as we did.

People, try to explain more than just a simple sentence that sounds catchy because, most often that not, the sentence means absolutely nothing and the attempt to look smart fails horribly. But, since I know pretty much nothing about that fart (er, i mean PET), I'll just say that you can't necessarily judge people by only looking at the aspects of their life that are more convenient to you. And from the comments, I don't understand why Anh Khoi is the only one giving the things that PET did right. The others were basically putting down the article without any argument at all.

The current system in Canada sucks big time. The waiting lines are horrible. I keep hearing that crap about it being free. Waiting hours in the hospital isn't worth it.

About the Americanization thing, I agree with Anh Khoi, it's not really Americanization. And even if it was, people should remove that feeling of hatred towards everything America does just because they hate the US.

Having the best of both worlds is a good idea.

To those saying nate was a good person from a good family and that he is innocent untill proven guilty need to get a grip on reality. The night he killed my friend amy for no reason he was a demon possessed devil. He has no idea the ripple effect he has caused by his actions. Amy was a beautiful person. Talented and intelligent. She did not deserve to die. She had so much potential and I know she would have pulled through her current state of being. Nate admitted strangling her for 5 minutes. Forensic team determined she was killed in his apartment and then moved. There is no doubt he did this.

I hesitantly bought my Vista laptop after my XP system was sent for repairs (hardware, not software). Vista does "weird things", but it hasn't disabled me...yet. That said, why is it that I feel the need to have an XP system, a Linux system (on an old Pentium 2, no less), and my school's G4 iBook? I thought Vista was the standalone answer to all life's troubles!

Even as a teacher, I'm guilty of this. I don't text throughout the night, and I've done my best to turn off notifications/sounds at night, but my cellphone is definitely my main mode of communication.
With students already not getting enough sleep because of homework, sports, extracurricular clubs, and trying to have a social life, the electronics-interruptions just add to the problems.

Our filtering, unfortunately, is done at the Intermediate Unit for our area. That means, not only do the teachers not have control, but the district itself does not have complete control!
I've used YouTube and iDesktop.tv to download the videos and show them offline. I use sms to connect to Twitter for help/polls/advice. And thankfully blogs are for the most part not blocked, but commenting on them is.
I agree that education of safe internet use (and how to "wash your hands" should you encounter dirt or sewage) MUST be taught, whether the schools filter it out or not.

I think DOPA is in the Commerce Committee because that committee tends to deal a lot with technology issues. And there is a pretty significant commercial side to DOPA too -- it insulates web services like MySpace from a huge part of its market base, and that will really affect thye bottom line of those web sites. I wonder if getting in touch with the operators of some of the web services affected by DOPA might not be a bad move for educators at this point.

I don't want to start a "Microsoft vs. ___" flamewar or anything, but I wanted to reply to solveig's comments on my original comment. (Follow that?)

I didn't say OO doesn't have frills. I'm saying that at least in my experience, the "frills" -- things like commenting and graphics -- for OO aren't compatible with similar frills in MS Office. Since the publishers I've worked with use Word, and they really really like the commenting capabilities of Word and use them all the time, using a word processor for which those comments aren't compatible isn't an option.

Hence the actual statement I made: For no-frills everyday use, OO is fine. That is, if you aren't using or don't care about the advanced functionality, then use OO. But as for me, I need that stuff and need it to work out of the box. Hence I'm using Office.

I also want to reiterate the last point I made, which is that -- for whatever reason -- the Mac OSX version of MS Office seems a lot smoother and full-featured than the Windows version. I absolutely cannot say the same about NeoOffice, the OSX version of OO, which is way behind the Windows/Linux version of OO.

That said, again, I used OO for years in a highly document-intensive environment with little or no problems. So solveig's advice is god -- give it a shot, and see if you like it. Heck, it's free, so why not?

I used OpenOffice for 2-3 years after switching from using Windows to using Linux back in 2002. It's... OK. As an office package used for performing basic, everyday tasks with no frills -- like basic word processing and spreadsheet work -- it's perfectly adequate, and I used it to collaborate with colleagues in a Windows-only environment for three years without any major problems.

But when you move beyond the basics, OO starts to lose its luster. Last year, for example, I wrote a test bank for a math book; the publisher sent me Word versions of the textbook chapters and I wrote up the tests in OO Writer. There were a lot of compatibility problems with things like commenting, graphics, fonts that are not common to OO and Word (there seem to be a lot of those), and graphics. Especially graphics. It seems that each program handles graphics in completely different ways, and so images in the publisher's proofs of the book came up out of whack, and likewise for my OO Writer images.

Plus, I had a LOT of problems with OO crashing. I mean, lots. One afternoon while I was sweating to get the project done under deadline, OO crashed *nine times*, losing data each time. Because of this I finally converted my work to Word, ditched OO, and went back to Word. I completed the project without a hitch from there.

So, OO is nice to have around, and if has nice features (like native PDF conversion, which Windows programs stupidly don't have) but for mission-critical stuff I just don't trust it. MS Office is a good product and it's worth the money just to have the piece of mind.

Especially if you put it on a Mac. :)

As far as cross-platform issues go: I do a lot of shuttling of files from Mac to WinXP systems and back myself via a flash drive, and I've never encountered problems. Of course, the files themselves must be readable on either system (e.g. you won't be able to launch Keynote programs on the Windows system), and the flash drive needs to be formatted with a FAT32 filesystem and not the Windows-only NTFS file system. Students can just look on the box of the flash drive when they buy it, and it will say something like "PC/Mac" or otherwise indicate that it can be used on either operating system.

And of course, since the Macbooks and the newer-model Mac Minis are based on an intel processor, it's possible to dual-boot both OS X and WinXP using the Boot Camp software. So if worse came to worst, and you/the students really needed a Windows-only software package, you could just load both OS's on the Mac machine and boot into WinXP. Go do a search for "Boot Camp" at Apple's web site and you'll learn all about that.

Really, give these new Macs a look. I switched to a Mac mini at home last fall and now to a Macbook at work a month ago, and I'm never going back. They are great machines for both multimedia stuff and serious math/programming work.

Vicki, is there any particular reason you want a Windows environment in this lab as opposed to Mac? Most of the specs you listed are pretty platform neutral, and the ones that referenced Microsoft products directly (like MS Office) can be done natively in OS X or can be done better with OS X software. For instance:

- I've got MS Office installed on my Macbook, and it works great, even better than the WinXP version.
- Keynote is way better than Power Point.
- Video editing is really easy and user-friendly with the iLife stuff (iMovie, iDVD).
- iWeb, also part of iLife, is supposed to be pretty good for podcasting and web page creation, although I've never used the program myself.

And the newer Macbook laptops (not the Macbook Pro) are a really good buy for the money. I have a Macbook Pro and it's amazing, but pricey. Good for the teacher workstation. :) Apple may have some grant money available too.

Not that I'm trying to be a Mac evangelist or anything. Oh heck, who am I kidding, of course I'm a Mac evangelist.

If so, that really prevents any meaningful interpretation of these numbers unless we could get a similar chart with the spam removed from the data. The facts are these chris was driving illegally (no LICENCE no INSURANCE and over the legal ALCOHOL limit) he richly deserves to go to jail for the new 7yr term imposed on him today. Remorse is all good and well but why commit the crime if you think remorse is the solution. Little miss im sure chris is very sorry that he was CAUGHT and not sorry for what he done. Didnt his parents have the time to TEACH him right from wrong. Maybe if he had killed a member of your family you would view things from a different angle. In relation to his privacy i Agree he is entitled to it as are people entitled to drive on the queens highway without fear of smart asses thinking they are above the law. Chris's best way of showing his remorse would be to go around high schools informing people of the dangers of drinking and driving, like superman he was'nt infallable. On Taleb,

Bill Keane interviewed him on Bloomberg last night (maybe a replay, I am not sure) and called the Black Swan "rambling", basically trashing it WHILE interviewing Taleb.

He did previously state that "Fooled by Randomness" was a classic or masterpiece (something like that), so I don't know how Taleb took it.

And he immediately went to a commercial break after trashing the Black Swan. Funny stuff.

Also, FWIW, the price action today would lead me to believe that a rise in the VIX is more likely than a decline, at least in the short term.

Additionally, I seem to remember a trader on Options Doggy's blog mentioning that he/she had reviewed all buys/sells that were over $1 Mil and the success rate was something like 70%-80%. As I recall, this was a comment to a post by BD. I never thoroughly checked that number, but the few multi-million trades I did review seemed to demonstrate a very high success rate.

With that VIX trade clocking in at $7Mil, I tend to believe that there must be a very savvy operator behind that trade. Sure, it could be a hedge, but that still implies that someone was willing to make a very large bet over a very short time frame to protect the rest of their portfolio.

If this volatility keeps up, that trade is going to take some serious heat tomorrow. Interesting.

Still though, if one can stand the heat, the VIX will likely be below 23 by September.

Thanks for the recommendations! Bill Cara's WIR is mandatory.

While some have a bone to pick with Bill due to his perceived bearishness, his analysis cuts to the core of the markets every weekend. If he is cautious, it is most likely because he has been in this business a long time. You don't last as long as he has in the capital markets by chasing every momo name and being a perma-bull.

I visited Fallond's Picks a few times, but will certainly check his chart reviews and recs. Thanks!

I have noticed that the last several (recent) market declines have been preceded by an unusual level of what appears to be VIX call buys.

The last "correction" before this most recent event, I noticed that approximately 100,000 VIX calls traded the day prior.

Have you noticed this as well? Do you track this in any way? I recognize that it can be difficult to tell who is buying or selling on the day (unless you can watch big blocks go off at the ask, which can be difficult to monitor), but I have confirmed that these were buys by tracking the open interest in the past. Today there seemed to be at least one big block of Jun 20's and many smaller blocks. However, I don't know if that means much given the relatively low cost of those calls. Also, at 15K, that is hardly significant.

I simply point this out to determine if this could be another potential VIX "tell" as to the short term prospects of the broader market.

Excellent post, as always.

Sorry to refer to Echo Volatility as "aftershocks", it just seemed fitting at the time of the comment.

From your analysis, what time frame was echo volatility the most prevalent? Was there a strong possibility of echo volatility immediately following a VIX spike (1-2 weeks) and a strong mean reverting move? Or did your research simply suggest that it was more likely in the more distant weeks that follow the spike?

I don't know if you have any opinion or information in this regard, just curious as to your take.

Also, it sure seems the VIX is doing it's best to make those VIX callers come up empty and make those spreads you described profitable. Not that the amount of calls on the VIX has anything to do with the likelihood of a volatility "event", still, it is interesting.

I doubt Posada will retire until his contract is up. I'm fine with him for now anyway. I can see maybe getting Mauer and not signing Matsui, Molina and using Mauer as a DH and catching. Or if Boston wants him I can see the Yankees pulling another A-Rod Tex kind of deal scooping him in. I would like him in the lineup though.

lol at the posada hater. How does Posada give up 6 runs? Burnett gave up 6 runs. If you watch the game you can see him have no control whatsoever. You can clearly see Posada setting up for the ball and Burnett missing the target by a mile. And no it's not because Posada is catching. That myth that pitchers can't pitch to Posada is busted. I just met Phil Hughes today. After the game he did a signing in Roosevelt Field Mall (for the Steiner store) and got a picture with him and a ball signed. He's pretty tall. That's my highlight for today.

I like Melky on the team. He can hit the ball well and he is also a switch hitter and out of all the yankees OF he has the best arm. His accuracy can be improved but he can throw well unlike the rest. From a defense point of view I would say keep him for now.

Nothing would make me happier than to see Joba back in the bullpen BUT they are most likely not going to move Hughes since he is doing so well. Also right now they don't have a choice to move him out of the rotation being Wang is on the DL.

I do agree with what Sam said. I also thought when the Yankees got Teixeria it would boost them that much more.

Boston can beat us all they want in the regular season but it's the post-season what counts. We dominated Cleveland in 07 but in the post season the Yankees got their ass handed to them.

I agree with the grades for the most part. Maybe a C+ for Swisher being he had a really great start in the beginning of the season with a bunch of home runs and rbi.

I'm sorry Anon you're right. A catcher with 4 world series rings and who caught a perfect game doesn't know how to catch but someone who came out of AA and played 23 games knows how to catch better. Wang should have stayed in AAA until he got his confidence and everything else back up. The SOS call to the bullpen was a bad move. At this point he should go back down until he gets locked in and his confidence is up. In the mean time Phil Hughes should continue to start. You can't put Wang in the bullpen because 1. He's a starter 2. Starting in AAA will only build him back up as a starting pitcher. 3. He is still giving up runs in the MLB every time.

I'm not in favor of getting rid of Wang. He is a great pitcher. He is just not the Chien-Ming Wang we've had since his injury. Before his injury his career record (4 seasons) is 54-20. Add his 3 losses from this year we get 54-23. Still pretty darn good. He gave us many wins in the last 4 years and will give us many more once he is "back"

I use it with no complaints. My older laptop had 512mb of ram with a 2ghz celeron processor and it ran fine. I'm using an intel core2 duo with 1gb of ram and still runs fine. I don't have a good graphics card or sound card either. The only time it doesn't stream well is if your internet connection is really weak. But yea the concept is genius especially if you are away from home for a while but the catch is you always need a broadband connection wherever you go.

Hughes really bombed last year no question which is why his stats show it. If he can be more consistent (which has been a major problem for him) he will bring a lot of quality starts to the team. Joba was lights out as a relief pitcher. I remembered how pumped the crowd and everyone got when he would come in. He got the job done all the time. As a starter I don't get that same feeling at any point and a guy like him in the bullpen can bring a lot. Maybe he just needs more experience then he could be like that again as a starter. Time will tell.

I always thought he should be in the Pen. I believe this because as a starter I think Hughes is better than him and Wang is better than him. That makes Joba the odd man out. The only good start that he gave us that I can think of was last year against Boston. Hughes started a lot less games and has a handful more very good starts. Joba also throws too many pitches. In the future I think he will be better. He's a young guy and will become a fine starter. Right now he should be in the pen.

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions yet with Cervelli. Behind the plate he is doing a great job. As far as his bat he still has to prove himself. We've seen guys like Shelly Duncan come up hot and then fail to adjust which led him to get sent back down. So far I like Cervelli but don't say replace him for posada/molina yet.

I agree it's not the umps fault. Yea it shouldn't have taken over 8 minutes but he should have stopped/slowed down or they should have started warming somebody else up just in case right when the replay started.

I thought Francisco Cervelli did a fantastic job at the plate both defense and offense. You couldn't have asked for a better replacement consider both veteran Yankee catchers are on the DL. This was a big win and if there was a time to get things in motion this game could be that spark we've all been waiting for.

What A-Rod did was wrong no doubt about it. How Selena Roberts cracked the case somehow getting his name she had to have done something illegal THEN she writes a book about it to make a quick buck is wrong. You don't see books biographies about Barry Bonds or Mark McGwire like this. She also started this whole baseball drama about should the other players who failed the test names be shown by singling out A-Rod. A-Rod shamed baseball by using it and Selena Roberts is killing baseball with all this drama. I hope nobody buys her book. IMO

I thought Joe should have taken CC out sooner. But then again the bullpen would have lead all the runners to score that CC would have left on base so it didn't matter. This injury had a good side for A-Rod. Notice how all of the stories went from steroids to about this injury and when will he be back. All of the steroid topics died out for now which is a good thing. It's also good to see he's getting better and no setbacks so far.

I'm glad you enjoy it, because I can see the charm that it could hold for people. You can see a certain level of polish/care went into certain aspects, and that's bound to appeal to a set of people. I'm just not in that set :)

I had it set to Vehicle because all I had at the time was vehicle 'missions'. Yet still got Victory Village, over and over again.

My hunch is that since I'm automatically matched with people of a similar skill level, that there just wasn't any available servers running a vehicle map that had players of my skill level.
I think if I were a newbie, or if I was much higher skill then there probably would have been more servers available.

It's also possible that it was just bugged for a while when I was playing and it's since been fixed.

I am excited about Diablo 3... so excited that I thought about picking up Diablo 2 and playing that again.

However Diablo 2 has crappy 800x600 graphics.

So I looked around for 'Diablo like' games. After some research I decided to give Titan Quest: Immortal Throne a try.... it's AWESOME :)

I've been having a lot of fun playing it. The graphics are great, the game play and character advancement is great, the loot drops are amazing and it's just so much fun.

It's available via Steam by the way, which is how I bought it. If you choose to try it out, buy the package deal where you get both Titan Quest and Titan Quest: Immortal Throne. You'll need to run Titan Quest first, just once, then exit. Then run Titan Quest: Immortal Throne which includes the original game (it just adds another act on the end and new features, bug fixes, etc to the game itself).
I've been playing for several days now, it's still a lot of fun.

You simply must go get a copy of Diablo 2 AND the expansion (it raises resolution up to 800x600)

I was in the same boat a few months ago. I was pretty bored and done for good with WoW.

I decided to give a try Lord of the Rings Online. However after only a few hours of playing, things just didn't "feel" right to me. I was never too much into the Lord of the Rings story, and I had read that much of the game is just a big 'grind' so I stopped.

I gave Dungeon Runners a try. Played that for about two or three days. Realized that there is virtually no point at all to that game since PvP is not really for me and as much as I love a single player game of 'wrestle the random number generator' without a good storyline component (like Diablo 1 and 2 had) I really don't see a point.

I ended up deciding to re-visit Eve online.
This was my THIRD attempt at this game, I had tried it twice over the past several years but it never clicked and didn't put much more than a few hours in at most.
This time however went much better. The graphics are much improved and the tutorials and help is great now. I've been playing that now for about a month and a half and having a good time.
I haven't joined a corporation (where I here the game REALLY becomes fun) yet, but I intend to as soon as I've skilled up a bit more.

If you haven't given Eve a fair try recently, I'd say give it a shot.
Knowing that there is just '1' server and everything you do matters and has an impact on everyone else is just awesome :)

I have a question about grouping entities into a variable-
I’m not sure if you should use “List” or “Sets”-
Suppose your lisp program draws a series of lines, circles, and points…
Now you wish to group these entities in a variable so you can manipulate them…

Second- I am trying to set a point variable from values I have calculated. How do I send this information to a point list (X, Y, and Z)? For example:

Me choca la arrogancia con que te hablan de "números", "de que apagues la televisión si no te gusta", "de lo que vende" y toda esa mierda. Se cagan en los pantalones con los gerentes del canal y no se dan cuenta que no son dueños de una mierda y que se cagan con nadie y se hacen los hombres sacando pecho contra unos pobres diablos que ganan dos pesos.

Está buena la foto.

No tengo muy claro la dimensión artística de Peña, en particular no me gustaba tanto lo que veía, aunque creo que su fuerte era la radio. Tampoco tengo muy claro porque se le ocurrió refregar sus partes en la cara a una espectadora de su obra, evidentemente le gustaba pasarse de la raya. Sin embargo me gustaba ver los reportajes que le hacían. Era un tipo profundo, que le hacía sentir temor al que lo entrevistaba de no poder controlarlo. No hay muchos tipos hoy por hoy, que te hagan reflexionar. Es una pena que se haya muerto, tengo la sensación de que era un buen tipo con un sentido muy claro de justicia y que sabía muy bien en quien cagarse. Recuerdo que cuando yo no sabía quien era, el tipo escupía mierda insistentemente contra el entonces dueño de radio 10, Daniel Hadad, en plena ceremonia del Martín Fierro.

Al mismo tiempo que se muere Peña, los peores excrementos de la televisión argentina se desbordan y se vienen a instalar en esta orilla.

Benito, tengo necesidad de meterme porque es crudo y contundente tu argumento, y es real. Pero yo miro las listas de candidatos a legisladores de los partidos tradicionales y no las veo encabezadas por tipos muy idóneos en materia de crear leyes. Hubo uno, recuerdo, que cuando salió diputado por Canelones decía orgulloso por televisión que lo que iba a hacer a partir de ese momento era trabajar de mandadero de la gente. El nivel general de los políticos bajó muchísimo en general, y para mi punto de vista, no es precisamente el que acuesta de una piña a uno y le dice a otro "pa vos también hay, ladrón!" el que perdió el nivel en mayor grado. No se debería perder la capacidad de sentir asco.

Lo único que falta es que se acuse a los legisladores calentones de que "ventilen los trapitos sucios" o que "no tengan código".

Es una pena tener que estar discutiendo esto. Discutir si es bueno o no que la gente confíe más en legisladores revoltosos y a lo mejor ignorantes pero a lo mejor consecuentes a sus principios frente a otros muy educados para gobernar, pero gente en la que no se podría confiar jamás y que son causal directo, a mi entender, de que hoy haya tanta marginación y violencia. Es verdaderamente penosa la cantidad de ejemplos de hombres y mujeres que no estuvieron a la altura de ser ungidos representantes y utilizaron esa condición para beneficiarse en la vida.

Aclaro para Benito,Flora y Astori.

Cuando me referí un exministro de economía no me referí a él sino al ministro del último gobierno blanco.
Básicamente coincido con los argumentos y las sensaciones que enumeró recién Benito, respecto a Astori.
Pienso no se manejó con la obsecuencia al poder económico que sí tuvieron los anteriores ministros. Y también tuvo actos valientes de coherencia como sostener que nunca había dicho que no pagaría la deuda externa en caso de ser gobierno, cuando otros veletas lo gritaban con euforia buscando el aplauso de la tribuna. Lo distingo con su presencia en el diminuto gremio de los políticos coherentes ( al menos la mayor aproximación posible a ella que pueda tener un político).

Me refería a De Posadas ("no hay que saber economía simplemente hay que aplicar las recetas del fondo monterio internacional"). Me asusta un poco ese retorno de los muertos vivos. La verdad es que prefiero votar a Astori para que tenga un poco de fuerza e incidencia para marcar el rumbo en el futuro gobierno de Mujica.

Respecto a la inútil tercera opción en el fa, me parece que lo que se buscó fue impulsar algún candidato joven (Martínez) y justo calzó el más veterano de los posibles, lo que terminó siendo un error. Al final terminamos en un carnaval electoral con frases como "esperanza" y "futuro" proferidas por figuras desvencijadas con la salud bastante precaria. No transmiten en lo gestual la esperanza y ni el futuro que promueven sus jingles. Creo que se le han cerrado los caminos caprichosamente a la gente joven más capaz. Me doy cuenta que haber elegido a Erlich como candidato a intendente cumplia la función de poner a alguien correcto, de perfil bajo sin caer en el peligro de que se catapultara como un factible candidato a presidente que le pateara el tablero a los ancianos de la tribu. Entonces ahora pasa que cuando decís que Martínez podía ser un buen candidato te dicen "y quien lo conoce?".

Y no hay. Van a seguir manejando los mismos los destinos del país entre cada pausa para tomar la medicación para el Alzheimer.

También por eso arranque comentando para el lado del ballotage entre guatemala y guatepeor. Para mi es importante no regalar votos en blanco y anulados. Sumar votos para gente aproximadamente decorosa y consistente me parece que puede tener mucha importancia en el contralor futuro de un gobierno que pueda no gustarte.

Tenés razón en que algo parecido a mi frase simplona se explota electoralmente, es indudable. Lo que no comprendo es que no te parezca creíble.
Es confesión de parte, un ex ministro te dice que no sabe nada economía (naturalmente canchereando) y que aplica las recetas del fondo sin agregarles medio ejercicio mental. Años después un premio nobel de economía nos desayuna a todos que los países que aplicaron a rajatabla las recetas del fondo fueron los más perjudicados. Por casualidad era lo mismo que venían pregonando una serie de supuestos ignorantes desde hace años.
Entiendo que no nos vamos a poner de acuerdo. Me pasa los domingos en casa.

Flora: Por eso comencé con lo de la trampa del ballotage cuando tenés que optar por dos figuras cuestionadas. Sin ir tan lejos, Alain García en Perú (que ganó la segunda vuelta aun justificando la corrupción de su gobierno con el motivo de su juventud, ya por entonces era el presidente más joven en la vuelta con 36 añitos.

Volviendo al país, hay busquedas naturales del equilibrio, y por motivos claros hoy la balanza está pesando más para el lado de Mujica.
No salen Evos, Chavez y Pepes por generación espontánea. Si te fijás bien ningún rival de Mujica regala entusiasmo, seguramente hay conciencia de que no debe ser tan bueno gobernar para tener contentos a los organismos internacionales de financiamiento en lugar de a la gente que te impulsa al poder.

Todo esto para decir que coincido con tu posteo, aunque a lo mejor yo tengo una visión diferente de lo que es "capacidad" o "incapacidad", siempre hay matices como para que la gente no se ponga de acuerdo en algo.

Más allá que un político deba ganar bien, eso no implica que pueda hacer lo que se le cante con su sueldo, entre otras cosas, donárselo a su partido. También puede no estar de acuerdo y armar lista propia.

El ballotage tiene cosas buenísimas, hacer que no llegue al poder un tipo como Menem, Le Pen y hasta hubiera impedido el segundo gobierno de JMS. Pero se están dando casos en que llegan al ballotage dos personas con altísimo grado de rechazo. Ignoro como se puede cambiar eso, pero estaría bueno cuando menos un ballotage entre un canditado presentable y otro intachable.

Hay gente como yo que no soporta la idea de volver a tener un ministro de economía que se jactaba de no saber economía, ya que no era necesario,según él, porque simplemente había que aplicar las recetas provistas por el fmi. No me importa nada si ganan bien o no ganan bien, no quiero gobernantes así nunca más.

Tengo dos o tres sensaciones sobre estos ninguneadores profesionales.
Primera: Los debe joder la excelente operación de marketing de Chavez y que el libro se haya catapultado en amazon. Hay gente que sangra mucho por el bolsillo.
Segunda: se sienten representados por los cipayos que aparecen en el libro y odian verse reflejados o expuestos de ese modo.
Tercera: estoy seguro que hay una conexión entre la forma de hacerte la corbata y la forma en que pensás.

A lo que voy es que cuando tenés ess formas de vida elementales después es esperar, para el universo un par de miles de años no es nada.

Cacho: Si, me acordé de Funes cuando vi que el tipo tardaba 5 horas en decir el número pi. Pero buscando vi que hay otro Savant, que le tirás fechas y te dice que día de la semana cayeron, y además el tipo de dice lo que comió ese día y lo que hizo. En este caso el tipo era un niño normal y recibió un pelotazo jugando al baseball.
A veces la realidad supera a la ficción, gran frase hecha.

Varias cosas. Primero es que hay que disociar el concepto de vida extraterrestre del de "sobrenatural". Debieramos verlo como lo más natural del mundo. Fijate que en las etapas primarias de la Tierra esto era un gran caldo de rocas fundidas, con volcanes por todas partes(hasta nuestro estable país estaba lleno de volcanes)y la atmósfera estaba saturada de nubes de veneno al lado de las cuales nuestra actual contaminación sería objeto de risa. Una vez que comenzó a generarse el equilibrio, mediante la combinación de un caldo de determinados elementos químicos la vida se gesta (está probado en laboratorio). Arrancás con cadenas de aminoácidos hasta terminar en cosas compejísimas como somos nosotros, por poner un ejemplo. Así se genera la vida aqui y en cualquier lado.
Por otra parte hay en la tierra criaturas simples increiblemente resistentes a las altas temperaturas, radiación, etc. Con que una sola hubiera resistido viva en las entrañas de un meteorito de los que suelen visitar cualquier planeta por carradas, bastaría para que comenzara a replicarse y mutar de llegar en el momento preciso.

Sobre lo que preguntás de la telepatía, no fue un tema en el que profundizara, pero H. me contó que los mensajes eran recibidos por grafografía (en el caso que conté el muchacho recibió imagen y sonido a través de un sueño y no tengo más detalles). Es decir, H. o alguno de sus familiares comenzaban a escribir compulsivamente cosas con sentido sin tener la menor idea de que era lo que escribían. A tal punto que cuenta H. que Oxalc les dijo que debían viajar a Perú y buscar a Sixto Paz para unirse a su grupo. Cuando llegan a Perú para contarle toda la novedad a Sixto Paz, con quien no habían tenido contacto previo, les abre los brazos y les dice que ya sabe quienes son, que vienen de Uruguay y que los estaba esperando.

Te confieso que nunca le pude creer a Sixto Paz, siempre me pareció que fabulaba y también te confieso que si H. diera conferencias por dinero, escribiera libros y viviera la gran vida desconfiaría muchísimo. Pero H. es un tipo austero y basta tratar con él para darse cuenta que es un tipo llano y sencillo.

Es un tema que cuando menos tiene bastante tela por cortar.

Lorena: yo no me refería a lo que hagan las personas mayores, creo que los adultos básicamente podemos decir que hacemos lo que nuestra voluntad nos indica y somos responsables a eso; me referí a la influencia sobre los niños justificando el camino de cualquier forma de prostitución.

Un ser humano tarda suficiente tiempo para darse cuenta que lo que aparece en televisión no tiene por que ser bueno, como para arruinarse la vida bastante en el medio.

En el caso que mencioné la actriz actuaba junto a su hija (para la que logró un cachet si mal no recuerdo de 2 millones y pico de dólares) y tenía que justificarse ante ella porque actuaban juntas y la nena la veía despelotarse adelante de un montón de tipos actuando como energúmenos y supongo que le haría preguntas. Recuerdo que salía a los medios en las campañas publicitarias diciendo que "hacía eso por su hija" y palabras más palabras menos que era un trabajo como cualquier otro.
A mi no me molesta que lo haga, me molesta que lo promueva.
Y en el caso que te conté, de una novela familiar que pasaba canal diez de tarde a mi prima de 13 años se le había instalado la idea de que despelotarse por plata era "un trabajo como cualquier otro". Ojo al piojo con la tele, hoy día habla cualquier caracagada como si fuera un consagrado sin tener la menor conciencia de la inmensa bola de nieve o mierda que está mandando a la sociedad. Si la gente que está en los medios masivos no es cuidadosa con las formas y los mensajes directos o subliminales que se mandan al aire hay que prohibirlos directamente. Se trata de levantar la mira solamente, no de hacer listas negras de gente.

Creo que eso de "televisión para la familia" es un mito muy antiguo. No se si haya alguna familia sentada en el sofá mirando tv a lo familia simpson. Hay encuestas que dicen que mirar televisión se ha tornado un hábito solitario, es común que haya al menos tantas televisiones encendidas como habitantes del hogar. Muchas veces "sintonizando" los mismos canales.

La realidad es que los políticos no le ponen en cascabel al gato porque acceder al poder democrático, con ese poder fáctico en contra es como remontar una catarata en un bote a remos.

La redención de las bailarinas de caño comenzó con Demy Moore hace unos años. Hace un par una novela española se encargó de mostrar que una ama de llaves que de noche salía a bailar para una manada desconocidos babeantes era ejemplar. Mi prima más chica un día cuando yo criticaba esa mierda se puso seria diciéndome que ella estaba haciendo ese sacrificio para ganarse el dinero dignamente.

A mi me descolocó ver una tapa de play boy con la hija de un conductor televisivo argentino, supongo que con 18 años ya cumplidos, desnuda, tetas operadas andando en un triciclo. Si play boy tiene la necesidad de hacer esa invitación violenta a la pedofilia para no fundirse imaginen el resto de competidores desconocidos dispuestos a todo por posicionarse en el mercado. Da mucho asco, la verdad.

Tinelli le dio una inteligente vuelta de tuerca al asunto con el tema de los "sueños", donde la gente vota "famosos" para seguir recaudando para los "sueños", y creo que solo beneficia a uno de ellos con un artículo que necesiten. El resto es recaudación y beneficio para la empresa. La gente lo ve y lo premia y muchos contribuyen por medio de el teléfono. Por algún extraño mecanismo psicológico, mayormente no apagan el televisor.

Respecto a la teletón lo que me golpea particularmente es la promoción de la generosidad, el hecho de fulano de tal o la empresa cual donó tanto efectivo. Es generosidad o lleva otro nombre?
Nos formamos en un mundo donde era un valor la contribución silenciosa y anónima a la resolución de problemas sociales. Contribuir por marketing es directamente repugnante.

Tiene que producir reflexión el hecho de que si uno se cruza con un a madre de 13 años con su niño a cuestas uno mira para otro lado y si se lo suplica Petinatti a los gritos agarra el telefono para poner 200 pesos. Indudablemente la televisión entraña un poder muy estudiado que a mí al menos,me ha hecho optar por dejar de encenderla.

Un apunte. Bizarro para rae es valiente o generoso lo que hace contradictorio el mensaje final para un lector que no viva en el Río de la Plata. Aquí se usa como extravagante y casi en el 100% de los casos para mencionar actos referidos a cosas divulgadas por la televisión en los últimos siete u ocho años.

A todo esto llovió. Lo que no logro descifrar es si el motivo es que rezó esta gente o si Dios lo hizo para joderte el posteo. De todos modos no llovió tanto, fue más bien algo así como un meo.

Sobre los iluminados. Cuando ganó el frente si no recuerdo mal hacía campaña TV y cuando la cosa se complicaba y había que hacer números el único autorizado a hablar era DA.

Creo que funcionó, es decir mayoría parlamentaria. Ahora desde que comenzaron a hacerse oir las voces de la lista más votada del frente comienza a ser tangible un impredecible, hace tan solo semanas, triunfo de los blancos.

No entiendo bien el cambio de estrategia, a menos que suceda que uno cree que es dueño de algo que en definitiva no era tan propio sino ganado a costas de la inteligencia de otro. Me refiero a que tan propios son los votos logrados por el mpp, sin desconocer el buen trabajo de captación de votos que hizo Mujica en las elecciones pasadas (donde no era el protagonista oficial, eso si).

Yo no soy quien para poner en duda que las gallinas de Andrade son muy sagradas y llenas de mística, pero la imagen que me queda a mí de ver los parques cubiertos de plumas negras y tripas y esqueletos de aves (las batarazas por algún motivo parecen ser las grandes perseguidas), carcomidas por las ratas, las palomas y los gatos, es de gente que no tiene el menor compromiso con el resto de la sociedad. Lo tomo como una falta grave de adaptación y de respeto a los demás. Naturalmente tampoco comparto la idea de "sacrificar" seres por la simple razón de que tienen un menor grado de evolución en su sistema nervioso y la práctic resulte bastante menos monstruosa que si se hicieran un sacrificios humanos como se han hecho en todos los continentes hace siglos. O no tanto tiempo atrás. O actualmente como en el caso de las lapidaciones.

Y ojo que uno de los que la pudrió con los sacrificios fue Jehová, hace ya bastante.

Estimado. Cuando decís "la televisión es y fue creada como entretenimiento, no es una herramienta educativa", te faltan las dos tablas de piedra, pelo y barba y me das una imágen bastante bíblica.

El mundo cambió, antes entretenía un ratito. Pibelandia empezaba a las cinco de la tarde. Hoy los guachos miran unos dibujos animados absolutamente calamitosos durante 24 horas. No digo que deje de entretener, pero primero, ponele cota (o coto), entretener no puede ser humillar, no es para nada formativo. Y segundo, ampliá la oferta. Tenemos un medio, usémoslo bien. Lo que digo es que bien se puede usar de soporte para fines un poco superiores. No digo que nadie tenga derecho a entretenerse, pero debieran buscarse caminos para que la gente que no quiere comerse tres horas esperando el ómnibus y viajando mal para ir a la universidad, o no puede venir a montevideo porque vive en bella unión pueda tener acceso al conocimiento. Naturalmente un curso codificado de cálculo o de leyes no sería "exitoso" pero tengo la impresión de que la "herramienta" es cada vez más sofisticada y potencialmente útil y la usamos para matar hormigas a alpargatazos.
Pero pensaba en letra alta nomás.

Tengo la impresión de que la tele está apresurando su defunción con este tipo de mierdas. Como decía el viejo Damiani, para mejorar hay que ponerse peor, y honestamente no creo que se pueda descender hasta mucho más.
Hace unas semanas andaba por el barrio una notera o algo así de un programa dominical tocando timbre en cada casa con la consigna de que si el dueño de casa salía con un papel higiénico en la cabeza lo llenaban de premios. Sentí mucha indignación de intentaran programar a la gente para que se humille por una miserable recompensa. Supongo que luego de esta época de mierda se le dará un adecuado uso a los medios audiovisuales y no para esta bosta inmunda. Por ejemplo, me parece ridículo que uno tenga que trasladarse hasta una universidad para poder estudiar. Es insólito que no haya bases de datos con clases de educación terciaria o técnica disponibles. Tenés terrible infraestructura, tremendos adelantos tecnológicos y los utilizas para educar a la gente sobre la cantidad de veces por semana que coje la vedette argentina de turno o veleidades por el estílo. No puede ser así, esto es tan solo un mal sueño, estoy seguro, lo que ocurre naturalmente es que los que están prendidos de esa teta están tan cagados de miedo que tratan de sacarle el último jugo posible. Pobres diablos....

Also, the reason we went with an external player is to allow the listeners to continue to hear the music while they browse the site, rather than changing the music on every page (like MySpace).
