Seems to me that automatically launching flares might not always be the brightest idea. What if you were on a product tanker that broke in half and has left a slick of jet fuel over the water? I guess there's some situations where flares might not go over so hot (or maybe it would depending on how you look at it).

Well I guess I'm not first but I'm guessing that's a fiber optic cable similar to the 17mm cable that's going to be laid between Sydney and Hawaii.

in Russian Nuclear Icebreakers: to the North Pole! on gCaptain
I just was looking at this online a couple days ago. For ~$22k (plus airfare to moscow) you can take a 14 day cruise on one of the icebreakers to the North Pole. Sounds like something to put on my "Things to do once I'm a Pilot and have lots of money" list.

in The Best Knives for the Pro-Mariner on gCaptain
When I worked on tall ships I used to carry one of Myerchin's sheath rigging knives. It was a great blade that stood up pretty well. I've also used their folding knives before. The blade is excellent and the marlinspike is good for light use. However, if you're going to be using the marlinspike for heavier duty actions like breaking shakles I wouldn't reccomend it, I always feel like I'm going to break it off every time I put pressure on it.
