Chris Brogan's blog in a way inspired me to get it all together so compliments to him for the inspiration.

Why am I telling you this? Because this was my first step in a series of new marketing. I'd planned on creating everything you've outlined here and that first e-book was my test to gauge the level of interaction I might be able to attract.

The result? It works! People engage and comment.

The thing is, if you provide something genuine and valuable, you'll find an audience that will take the time to listen. Though your immediate SOI is of course where you should start.

My advice to others, don't afraid to step out of your comfort zone. If I was able to do it, you can too!

Re: New Program Guidelines - Friday HAHA

Ahh man, that was hilarious!

Re: In San Diego homes are buy one, get one free

All I can say is "wow!" On the front was a screen-shot of my blog with the words "Visit my blog" at the top in bold and the blog address at the bottom in bold. On the back was a screen-shot of one of my posts.

It worked well initially, I met a few local contacts... But yes I could have followed up on it better.

I posted the fliers at the more local coffee houses and distributed them at the local caravans (this was a hit). Oh and Robeks is pretty cool because they have that community bulletin board. I won a free office party :-)

Here's a sample of the flier I created for Bridget Armstrong in Eugene Oregon. She put it this little piece together for her local morning bagel shop (she writes some GREAT community posts).
http://flickr.com/photos/25250804@N03/2438448832/

Re: Blog Flyer

Joseph,

Thanks for the mention.

Bridget should get the credit for the great display though :-)
She writes some excellent localism posts over on Active Rain.
http://activerain.com/eugeneoregonrealestate

Re: The Future of Real Estate For Sale Signs: Digital

As a mortgage practitioner I find it difficult to see the usage behind this (except for maybe showing slides between changing rates and product guidelines...maybe?)... But I will say that in my industry, for a company to regulate social media usage is a detriment to an employees marketing potential. If you're not going to be given the ability to market yourself via social media, maybe it's time you moved elsewhere. But again, this is in "my" industry so I don't speak for all companies.

Re: Marketing Lingo Defined: Filling the Pipeline

You said, "you need more than just clients to grow your business." Little spam and it's a great way to stay in touch professionally with that group of people that you want to maintain contact with. But...as networks expand I definitely agree that it becomes important to differentiate one group of contacts from the next (who you've met and where & the extent of your relationship). It sounds silly, but these things are important!

Though FB is nice because you can interact informally, it's difficult to keep up with everyone! Sure you can mass mail everyone an update or a greeting, but where's the personal interaction in that?

I hesitate to try other social applications like Naymz but hey, if this will get your organized, why not give it a shot?

Re: Spend a Day Reading and Commenting

Isn't that what community and support is all about? The thing is, I like LinkedIn for it's "reputation management" abilities (as you refer to it in your post). It's a great way to connect and engage with others in support of your work. It's very clean and professional and virtually spam free.

The only drawback (if you can call it that) is, have you ever noticed that some of your contacts don't utilize LinkedIn as much as you do? I like to connect on LinkedIn at least once every two weeks. I do so by sending an email through their email system and it's usually business related or a little more personal in nature. It's about connecting with those individuals in my network.

Anyway, I think that if you actively engage with your network, you can grow it and be more effective with it but you have to engage often (I think they call this consistency, lol).

Well, looks like I have some more reading to do so I'll catch you later.

Re: How I Use Facebook

I had joined FB a while ago but never found a reason to get active. I mean it's great to friend people and leave messages back and forth but ultimately I was bombarded with too many silly app requests that I began to find it very unappealing.

I'm not into friending a lot of people that I don't know. I'd like to connect with someone on at least some level before being connected with them. I guess that's why I ultimately ended up siding with LinkedIn. I found it cleaner and more professional and I'm constantly in touch with my connections there.

It isn't until recently that I"m beginning to use FB and even then only to a small extent. I use it to engage with people that I've connected with at some level and I'll continue to do so but I'll shy away from a lot of what I consider to be the useless apps. (Like you said, I'm not talking bad about these apps, they're just not for me).

For now, I think I'll continue to favor LinkedIn but you can still catch me on FB.

Re: Get Faster

I guess that's why I like twitter... People are talking about what's important NOW! It's like my own little news cafe. You know, where you sit and overhear the conversations going on around you...the people walking by (aka tweeting) and you chime in on what you find is important or pertinent.

And if you heard it on Twitter, chances are it's relatively new!

Re: Make Your LinkedIn Profile Work for You

LinkedIn remains my favorite social networking tool. The two things I've found most resourceful for me lately have been 1.) requesting recommendations from those within my network, 2.) answering question in the Q&A forum (it's good quality publicity). Actually, they're both good publicity.

Simply put, recommendations from your colleagues are a strong source of credit to you and your business.

Re: Social Media Starter Moves for Small Town Small Businesses

My favorite social media tool is LinkedIn. But have you ever found that sometimes your connections don't utilize LinkedIn as much as you do (at least sometimes). This is where FB comes in handy.

Think about it, "top of mind" marketing means staying on peoples' minds via various networks: from blogging, to FB, to LInkedIn, to Twitter, etc. But through it all, remember to keep the social element present.

If you're blogging for business and all you're doing is spewing blatant advertisements out, consumers have a keen radar for that sort of thing so they'll be less receptive to your message...so again, just remember to keep it social.

Re: Weezer Gets it All Right

Wow...classic!

At first I didn't think I'd recognize much but I've actually seen a lot of those at some point or other.

Re: Happy Birthday Dad

Happy Birthday Chris' Dad!

Re: The next time a Realtor gets all up in your face about a lack of ethics training in the mortgage biz

Todd,

I think I'm getting neck cramps... It was given to me as a gift...

I was sitting in the outside patio of Starbucks earlier this morning reading the morning paper and coincidentally skimming through this book. A woman was glaring at the title of it as her friends tried to gather a table. Haven't read the whole thing and skimmed it over once or twice I thought, "hey, I'll give her a copy of the book" as a gift just as it was given to me.

I felt a little awkward at first because I wasn't sure how her friends perceived it but after reading this post, I feel a wee bit better. There's a lot of great stuff that speaks volumes in that little book.

If you're ever frustrated by an escrow gone bad, a no-show appointment or just a general bad day at the office, before you blow up on others, remember: “I will speak ill of no man… and speak all the good I know of everybody”

Re: RE BlogWorld - Taking new media marketing to the next level.

Todd,

I'm sure it will build up to be an awesome event! To see everyone stand up for her the way they did (Twitter, Facebook, the overall blog-o-sphere) is simply amazing and speaks volumes as to the ability of the online mediums to gather a community together.

Carol Hian's comments were unprofessional and unnecessary! Quite simply it's not the way to do business. I'd like to say poor Redfin, but judging by the aftermath, it's more like poor Carol (or not). She got what she deserved and I'm sure glad Glenn didn't take the post down. It's been blogged before...you're responsible for managing your reputation both on- and off-line. Carol mis-stepped here and she should be held responsible and accountable for her actions and lack of professionalism.

I'm ashamed that she stands amongst fellow professional Agents but it's also kind of pride inspiring to see how the whole community gathered around her in support. As for Glenn, I gotta say, I like the way he handled it.

Re: Turning Away “Business”…

If it ain't sellin' there's no point in taking it on :-/ It's like you said, they'll find someone to list at the price they want. Am I good enough? But I don't want to sound like an idiot! It takes too much time!

If you made it through '07 and you're still here in '08, you've earned the right to be confident. It's like getting interviewed and hired on the spot. They ask you to come back for training next week on Monday...you've earned the right to walk confidently the next time you're in the office! You got the job...you're the sh*t! (Sorry, I'm trying to emphasize a point).

The point being...you're in Real Estate and if you've been here this long, you're damn great at what you do! So be confident and start writing. The blog-o-sphere is waiting for your contribution :)

So start writing...stay up-to-date on the tools that will create efficiency and always keep your head up!

Re: Leaving The Dark Side – From PC to Mac

So I see Jeff tricked you, I mean, helped you in deciding to get a mac huh? Well don't worry, you'll certainly be pleased with it's functionality. I was concerned too when I made the move to a mac. Primarily because I run my LOS software on it and I really need it to originate loans. But like you mentioned, parallels has allowed me to overcome that obstacle.

If you need tutorials on how to navigate through the mac you know who to contact; none other than Jeff Turner himself! :D

Good luck with the new mac...oh and by the way, thanks for connecting on twitter.

Re: Leaving The Dark Side – From PC to Mac

I started switched to mac full-time about 1.2 years ago now and I'll tell ya, it's easier to navigate through everything. It's speed and functionality is amazing. With a PC I'm afraid I'd just waste too much time (they're slow).

I'll look out for your tutorials.
