in MORE “BE CAREFUL” on The District Weekly
Brava LB City Girl as well as Theo the Man. The "usual suspects" cannot stay on any topic without grinding the same old same old. Do you have a proven connection between someone drinking in a 2nd street bar and then committing this crime? Rapists are not looking for sex, they are battering women with their personal weapon. Being "careful" won't cut it with these men.

sunshine Alcohol's Role in Sexual Assault: At least one-half of all violent crimes involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, the victim, or both (Collins and Messerschmidt 1993). Sexual assault fits this pattern. Thus, across the disparate populations studied, researchers consistently have found that approximately one-half of all sexual assaults are committed by men who have been drinking alcohol. Depending on the sample studied and the measures used, the estimates for alcohol use among perpetrators have ranged from 34 to 74 percent (Abbey et al. 1994; Crowell and Burgess 1996). Similarly, approximately one-half of all sexual assault victims report that they were drinking alcohol at the time of the assault, with estimates ranging from 30 to 79 percent (Abbey et al. 1994; Crowell and Burgess 1996). It is important to emphasize, however, that although a woman's alcohol consumption may place her at increased risk of sexual assault, she is in no way responsible for the assault. The perpetrators are legally and morally responsible for their behavior.

How about just give the cash, Snoop - an "inkind cash" donation is an oxymoron, the donation isn't cash upfront - its the presumption of the success of the record and concert. Don't cash in on this yourself for career reasons, just do the right thing.

I think SH Petroleum has also altered the routes for this testing - to major streets, not residential areas. If E.T. doesn't ring a bell, and you are a Simpsons fan, you'll think Truckosaurus has landed.

I like the fact that this blog gets so overwhelmed with blithering of the usual suspects that part of the text is down to about 5 spaces across. (at least on my screen) Evidently, an internal filter takes over and makes this same old-same old unreadable. A clue for us to go back to reading a good book, or doing a good deed. Thanks "Hal."

"Stop offering homeless services and the homeless will move on."

your words.

lbresident I guess we disagree on what benefits are. Homeless services in my mind is charity. The gov't shouldn't be telling people how much charity to give and who to give it to.

Stop rattling a sword over the head of the guy in the park and wake up to the growing army of "working poor" who are one pay check, one friend's couch, away from being homeless. These are women and children. Denying them benefits for affordable childcare, health care and vocational training will not encourage them to "move on" just move them into an even lower rung on every ladder. The term "homeless" is changing and needs to stop meaning just the chronic problem, but the situational state. Get off this bandwagon. Get off your computer. Go volunteer someplace. Make a difference, not just a noise.

Bravo! Except for the part about Joan Rivers. If you movie stars and famous journalists would quit marrying blond models, older women wouldn't be trudging fruitlessly toward the fountain of youth and parking in plastic surgeons waiting rooms.

Living in view of the airport gets "interesting" sometimes. This news explains the horn blasts from Boeing for about 2 minutes yesterday before a C-17 landed, followed by three large military helicopters. I guess I can calm down now and take the duct tape off the windows.

Gees, Jason, cut back on the caffeine. You might want to read your second sentence aloud in front of a mirror.

The article is well thought out and brings up some valid points. Don't we have enough war in the name of religion in the world already?

in TEXT OF E-MAIL FROM “CHILDREN TODAY’S THERESA BIXBY AND JOSH LOWENTHAL” SUPPORTING GARCIA’S COUNCIL CAMPAIGN on The District Weekly
It's not about Robert Garcia. He's a good guy. It's about supporters linking a noble cause with an individual citizen's name repeatedly in a message about that candidate. Why even mention Children today? What was the intent of it even being in the subject line so people will open it? Subliminal politics have arrived. People in the nonprofit world have made an agreement with the government that to receive tax exempt privileges they agree to steer clear of political campaigns and endorsements. This means the future to an agency which won't get donations when foundations and individuals no longer receive a tax deduction for their gift. It's not just got to be right, it's got to look right.

It is an important point. Campaign for who you believe in. Use your own reputation. Don't risk the future of an agency who must remain neutral. It does matter.

Now, everybody settle down. Give Wielenga a break.

in BACK AND FORTH ON SARAH PALIN’S BABY MAMA DRAMA on The District Weekly
The poor daughter, raised on fire, brimstone and abstinence could hardly ask her mother about birth control. She was going to be sexually active either way, why not give her the "choice" early on to manage her future? Those "hockey mom" posters make me laugh. It's not Sarah - it seems to be the daughter who gets to inherit the title since the dad is a local hockey star.

John B: You go. Who says idealism is dead? I wish the "Who" lyrics about "meeting the new boss....." weren't rattling around in my head now.

We'll all end up pretty tired "demanding" all the things the city should be doing. Maybe next we could demand our legislators get the budget passed?

Maybe we need to "demand" the city find that money LB got from the hotel tax for housing, but can't seem to find it was credited to any fund. The homeless have no voice to make "demands" - maybe you could look into this.

The election in 1968 was on my birthday. I voted for the first time and finally felt the gloom lift that had hovered since the day JFK was shot and childhood beliefs in fairness ended. But, getting up the next day it crashed back in again when the first thing we heard was that another Kennedy had been shot.

I hope the idealism that is powering the Obama bandwagon continues and does take the country back to a positive place. It's about time.

Gees, for once I'm too young to remember something (or too old to recall) - Dimys rings no bell. Now Eddies Jr.....I always wondered that. I lived near one of the early ones on 4th and the owner was killed in a shootout with a robber. Broke a lot of hearts since he was also said to be running a book out of there. But his name was Earl. (How often do you get to work that into a comment?)

in WHAT I LEARNED FROM CARL KARCHER | The District Weekly on The District Weekly
I'm sooo old, I remember driving all over town for fast food. There wasn't something on every corner. There was Oscar's drive in for the best hamburgers. (For us Wilson types). There was a very early Taco Bell clear out on Carson (probably actually rang that bell), and a Pup and Taco in North Long Beach. They would have specials: 4 hotdogs or tacos for a dollar. I've probably cut years off my life span with all those early trans fat laden foods. But, as your mother might have written - they were mighty toothsome.
