Is it terribly surprising that if you give people something to do that they will visit? Brand recognition plus entertainment is a pretty good recipe for success. Telstra is about the only corp that has really kenned SL's true potential. Renting out space to vendors at the Dome was the true master stroke. Not only do they get inworld revenue but it adds to the traffic. Whoever thought of that deserves a big fat bonus.

There is already a group of people that meet frequently at the sandbox. Maybe an open-air cafe-type situation - with stage if you want to do gigs - might work.

Rollback seems to have fixed it.

It does make me wonder if the sandbox is more trouble than it's worth. While I've heard various theories that it may not be the 'smoking gun' in this case of vandalism, as a former ABC Admin, vandalism and griefing are a daily (sometimes hourly) occurrence in the ABC sim because of the sandbox. It was certainly the cause of the Unearthed Club's destruction albeit inadvertently. Why does the ABC need a sandbox? Is it just to inflate the traffic figures? If so, what is the ABC's purpose in Second Life?

Just some thoughts.

Actually the figure quoted is $20k to $40k all up. And you really need to have a group hug. It's a major selling point in the real world. I hear that places like Google have GroupHug lessons and that if you fail them you can't work there =).

Actually the builder is quite talented, but lacks a portfolio. It's the old chicken and egg thing.

In the video industry it's common to see backyard operators doing jobs for ridiculously low prices. One guy I know does rl weddings for $A200. Given the amount of time he takes that's well below the minimum hourly rate. But he gets work because most of his clients don't care about the quality. For some customers price is the only thing that counts. They just want a video.

Same thing can apply in sl. Some people just want a building...any building...as long as it doesn't look bad it's fine.

Of course in the case that Bret mentioned I know the people involved and the clients wanted more than they could afford. They have pretentions and very little else.

Heh, Spectoral all those pale in comparison to Perth's Bell Tower. The turn of the century ferries. The CAT buses that leave just as you arrive. The pay-as-much-as-you-like Indian restaurant. The Black Swan scultures - except instead of being black, they're bronzy-kinda coloured. Now there is a major Australian iconic drawcard =).

Clearly these businesses have been ill-advised. The whole 'if you build it they will come' mentality doesn't work in sl. It's just like 1994 again when companies were coming to grips with this new internet thing. Many in the commenteriat back then wrote it off as a fad too (inhabited only by fanboys), in fact I remember one boldly declaring that 'nobody will make any money off the internet'. History has proven just how wrong they were. Same will happen with SL (or if LL don't get a clue, it's successor). The rules for business have changed. When the Wells Fargos and Aloft's work that out they'll be back.

The best thing for us is that now businesses can search for what they want (building, scripting, machinima, etc) rather than being confronted with only a list of names.

If the unit is a requirement to successfully complete the course then I guess they fail. Just because someone has a personal belief doesn't abrogate them from the requirements needed fulfill the necessary criteria. Otherwise what's to stop someone from having a personal belief that prevents them from being examined or assessed? If you make a choice to believe in something then you need to also be responsible for dealing with the problems associated with that choice.
