Certainly, dropping a bad manager is never a bad thing.

Especially in the case of OPM's we've seen programs bring them on because of their popularity, then drop them after a short recruiting period.

And I guess that's ok too. Some affiliates, however, do prefer to work with certain OPMs, and if they build sites based on the fact that a specific OPM is managing a program, they tend to get ticked if they're gone *unexpectedly*.

It's a dangerous premise though. With very few exceptions, OPMs move on quite frequently.

Re: NY Affiliate Legal Fund

And working now. To me, PJ is diametric when considering the stay at home mom (or dad).

I can all but guarantee that you and I don't see eye to eye on many things, and actually, that's great.

It's one of the things that I welcome about an organization, especially one with a backbone and teeth. While I certainly wouldn't wan it to become a witch hunt in any fashion, I would hope that things that PJ does, things that I do, and things that Shareasle does alike will all be visible to the members, and eligible for debate and discussion.

Re: An Open Letter to the Affiliate Marketing Industry Leaders

Thanks for the comments, folks.

Shawn, I was speaking specifically about the well documented speech given by Mr. Calacanis. In it, I think he showed a tremendous level of misunderstanding, even though in some regards he was correct in indicating that there's a lot of bad with the good when you break down what tactics affiliate marketers, email marketers, and loyalty marketers are currently using.

Re: A Framework for Discussing what the Nexus Tax Means

Thanks for the comment.

I didn't go far enough in this post in indicating the importance of the "at will" nature of the contracts involved in affiliate marketing.

If, for whatever reason, someone were to be in favor of internet sales taxes, New York has left a giant out for merchants that they wanted to act as tax collectors for them. Simply eliminate the affiliates, and you eliminate the liability. An unintended effect to be sure, but a glaring one. A merchant is free to terminate any sales affiliate, at any time, for any reason. "At will" indeed.

So it goes without saying, that whether or not you oppose the tax, New York has done a brutal job in:

a.) Writing the tax bill
b.) Explaining it

With the law itself being Strike One, strikes two and 3 sure came quick thereafter.

Re: Unhappy Friday Reading, and a Message to New York State

I'd certainly like more info on the grass roots organization to see what you're working on. As I mentioned, I'm not suggesting that I pick up the torch and run, but rather throw my time at it. I believe that the issues are serious enough now, and will become more serious in short order, that everyone in this industry needs to check their ego at the door, and get things done.

Re: Leveraging Social Media in Affiliate Marketing

I'd like to hear what you consider "tweetable", and what you don't. Many sites have incorporated full RSS to Twitter, and I rarely follow those. Fortunately, most also have a separate Twitter account for the blogger themselves, which I do follow.

I'd like to see what you think about how this kind of medium is being abused in that regards. I tend to call it "over convergence".

Re: It’s not just Trademark Poaching

Often too, they call it Trademark bidding when in fact they haven't trademarked the terms, much less prohibited it in writing. To me, it was a case of so much work for so little real effect. Similar to posting at ABW as much as I do. At the end of the day, for all we've said and done, can we show tangible results in the industry?

Maybe a few... and perhaps a bloggers job is just to point out and educate, but I'd still like to see a bigger impact. Perhaps Brook's post on a "governing body" is an important one.

While we can't police the industry, per se, at least having a coalition might further get the point of what affiliate marketing should and shouldn't be more centralized, and accepted.
