I've been hearing about people threatened with arrest for helping to clean up the spill. Public safety is great, but threats may not be the best way to pursue it.

All the more reason for all of us to keep our cameras close at hand as much as possible. And all the more reason to get out of the oil game as soon as possible.

-Oscar

Re: Vloggie Victory! Mostly we deal with food, ecology, and the crossover between the two. Occasionally we stray into issues of green lifestyle, business and architecture.

We throw in a lot of fun graphics, interviews, and loads of beautiful food photography. Food. Fantastic, beautiful, sustainably sourced food is a great way to pull people into the fold. Food (where it comes from, how it's made) is a huge issue, ecologically speaking, and a great place to do some fun and engaging environmental work.

Oscar

Director, Freshtopia.net

Re: We Can't Make This Stuff Up Dept.: One Cup or Two Sugar Mug

cute? yes. pointless? probably. a waste of energy? almost certainly.

Refined sugar is a processed food - throughout most of human evolution, the amount of calories that would be burned harvesting that much natural sugar (finding, picking, eating the veg/fruit, etc.), would have warranted the consumption of the sugar. Now though, you can buy pounds of it for practically nothing. Our food is flooded with refined sugar, and our increasing diabetes and belt lines in America reflect this.

According to a 2002 study from Princeton, sugar triggers the brains production of opioids, which are addictive.

http://www.princeton.edu/pr/news/02/q2/0620-hoe...>

Yes, there is sugar in maple syrup, and agave. However the glycemic index of M syrup is somewhat lower than refined sugar, and the G index of agave syrup is considerably lower. I'm successfully fighting off 'terminal' brain cancer, primarily [but not solely] by lowering my [natural] sugar intake, and dropping my refined sugar intake entirely.

Health and Happiness to all,

Oscar

Re: UnTreeHugger: Bamboo Feed N' Toss Pet Bowls

I appreciate the idea of not giving bad companies press. However, I still think it's worth while to point out when a company is doing wrong, even if it garners them some attention. I feel the same is true for companies employing sweat shops for example; to uncover the companie's practices and try to effect change, one must mention the company.

Thanks for the article Jasmine, and providing a link to the company allows us to contact the company make suggestions.

Best,

Oscar

Re: Taking the Train

My partner Tanja and I are taking the California Zephyr next week to Ann Arbor Michigan. It takes about 2.5 days and I find it a complete joy, especially after driving roughly the same trail twice. This will be the third time we've taken this trip via rail, and there are few better ways to see America. We'll be video blogging our trip again; the last trip was one of our most popular episodes... and was even featured here on Treehugger!

Happy Holidays,

Oscar

Director, Freshtopia.net

Re: Rusty Green Canoe Club By Sarah Wigglesworth

Oh how I love honest, rich materials! I really dissagree with the notion that opinion shouldn't be used in the absence of data. We do this all the time as a people. Assumption, opinion, and extrapolation NEED to happen to have a functioning society.

It would be great to make all of my decisions based on perfect knowledge and flawless data, but that's a long time in the making. A year ago I was give four months to live, via brain cancer. If I waited for the results of the most recent cinical trials to come in before deciding on a course of action, I probably wouldn't be here now. Instead I acted on what 'felt' right, because I had to. Now, I'm not only alive a year later, I'm feeling better than I've felt in 20+ years.

In a world without perfect data (a.k.a., ours) we must make decisions based on incomplete information. True, it causes problems some times, but it's also unavoidable, and is the stuff of life. Yes, there is an actual, scientific answer to this question, but who knows when it might surface? In the mean time decisions may have to be made on the subject without the clinical results. At that point we do what we 'think' is right.

What do you think?

Oscar

::Authors Note::

Well said Oscar- glad you are still here with us.

Re: California To Require Net Zero Energy Buildings

"...and many of them are forcing their clients to get on board as well."

Implies to me that the client is paying for it, and as such Mr. Alter's statement still holds.
