Hmm, you picked a strange part of the passage to give you problems!
I think that verse is yet another reference to Jesus making sure we all know that how we treat people will be a factor in the reward we see in the afterlife....
I've had a problem with the whole parable. I mean, the guy was just plain skuzzy, but Jesus holds him up as someone to imitate...
Weird.
