in Stumbling onto “new” things on Jeff's Tool Shed
Jeff,
Finding these 'new' things is where I think the documentation lacks. The bigger features are easy enough to figure out for the most part, but its these small little features that get greatly overlooked, but are of substantial use from time to time.

in I’m gonna kill Mike… on Jeff's Tool Shed
Jeff,
Just think, this next Solidworks World you get to go as a normal person, and not as a VAR puppet! I'm also planning to stay in Orlando until the following Monday so I can spend 3 days at the theme parks, and possibly go to the Daytona 500 if it all works out. I have never been to Orlando, and I'm a Disney fan, so it should be fun. Plus I'm working on some new methods of reporting from the conference itself!
**Very true, Mike. Actually, I'm hoping to be attending as I did in '07...a member of the press.
For what it's worth, I wouldn't actually kill you. Buying a round or two would garner you forgiveness.**

in Ask the Reader: What Version of SolidWorks Are You Using? (Oh, and Tips.) on SolidSmack
Josh,

The only people I know still using 2007 are companies that arent on a subscription, or companies whoes IT department hasnt been around to upgrade the software. Certainly by SP4.0 there is no reason not to upgrade, and those that are stubbornly resisting 2008 just because of pride, are not benefitting from the performance enhancements available to them in 2008. What I find funny in the 2009 beta forums are the people that were so vocal about 2008, now posting comments about 2009 saying they wish it was working like 2008! Some people will never be happy!

Anyhow on a lighter note, see you in Barcelona! I will be arriving early on Wednesday, and I'm staying behind and flying home on Sunday. It should be a fun time!

in SolidWorks 2008: Virtual Components? on GabiJack.com
Gabi,

I use Virtual Comps everyday. All of our mold designs are done top-down, and V.C. has been a big time saver. Since our molds are usually one-off items, we never assign part numbers until the design is finished. With V.C. we can finish the design, then assign names (file names) without having to do it in SW Explorer. V.C. are a good feature if you use them correctly!

in MAc Addict Alert! How To Use SolidWorks on a Mac on SolidSmack
It always amazes me that Mac fans run out and the first piece of software they buy is a program that allows them to run Windows! It seems to me they are basically paying 2-3 times as much for a computer just to have a neat looking case, a neat light up logo, or a fun to play with dock thingy.

When asked, most Mac users site that Macs are virus proof. Well according to a recently held contest the Mac Book Air running Leopard was the first O/S to fail virus attempts within hours of being subjected to everyday virus attempts (malicious website or link in an email). In fact, it took another day, and a further relaxing of the rules before Vista, and then Linux finally gave in a submitted to the virus. The team hacking the Mac was the only team that was able to win the full prize money because it was easier to hack then the Vista or Linux machines.

William Carr " the first O/S to fail virus attempts within hours of being subjected to everyday virus attempts (malicious website or link in an email)"

Perhaps you should get someone to explain to you what a "virus" is.

The hacking contest you refer to did try to affect the computers remotely and failed in all instances.

Only on the second day, after being allowed to touch the computer and surf to a rigged website was the Mac laptop compromised. And it went first only because the hacker specifically WANTED the Mac laptop.

He went on to say that he could have hacked any browser but Chrome, no matter what the operating system or the manufacturer of the computer.

Now, the important part: this is NOT a virus. This is a web browser exploit.

Not a virus, see? A virus is a self-replicating program that can compromise a computer, generally without needing to trick the user into loading the virus.

If the hacker had come up with a virus that can affect OS X, that WOULD be impressive. But he didn't.
bway al there once was a turd from Nantucket
His first name was mike and his last name was puckett
his cell phone was old
his computer had mold
and his software was all in a bucket

in SolidSmack Turns 1 Year Old: Still Cute, But a Bit Sassy on SolidSmack
Josh,

Congrats on the milestone. Isn't it fun to do this stuff? Personaly I enjoy getting called a Solidworks Shil, and being told that I need to have a claw tub full of ice water dumped on me all in the span of a week! I'm still trying to figure what a claw tub is by the way! Anyhow, heres looking forward to another fun year, before you know it we'll be in Orlando!

in Product Review: Hands-on With the 3DConnexion SpaceExplorer on SolidSmack
I have used some sort of 'spaceball' product for about 5-6 years now, and I'm lost when I don't have one. Currently I have a Space Pilot at work, a Space Navigator at home, and I have a second Space Navigator that goes with my laptops when I travel.

My biggest suggestion would be to give the product a chance before deciding it doesnt work. Once you get the work flow down, and get accustom to the feel, you will wonder how you ever worked without it. The 3DConnexion products are the only product demo's we do at our user group meetings.

in Installing SolidWorks On Vista Must Read on SolidSmack
It's funny how moving from XP to Vista is similar to moving from SW2007 to SW2008. Once you make the move and get used to the new look, you wonder why you waited so long. For anyone making the switch, I would recomend using the Vista 4 Xperts program that you linked to a few months back (it shows up under your related posts above). I used that on every Vista machine I have, and it realy solves some of the more annoying interface issues right off the bat.

in I see a hole out there on GabiJack.com
Gabi,

240kb to over 500 kb is not that big of a jump in number, considering its approx 1/4 of a MB. While it did technically double the file size, in a more complex part, the percentage would dramatically drop. What I would like to know is which one rebuilds faster? In todays world where a 500gb drive is $100, storage is not an issue. Speed of opening parts, and rebuilding them is.

in User Groups - You know what they are, right? on Jeff's Tool Shed
Jeff,
I would only be so lucky to have someone like you at one of our local VARS. We have two of the biggest ones in our area, and neither one wants anything to do with our group. Its a shame, but it always comes down to money for them.
**Sadly, Mike, even if I were there there'd be little I could do if I were working for one of your VARs. It sounds to me, like that's just how they operate. Thankfully, I work for one who has no problems supporting the local group.**

in The Iterative Process of Learning on GabiJack.com
Gabi,

After using Solidworks for 7 years now, I still think I know less than 75% of what it has to offer. One of the best, and worst things about Solidworks is that if there is one way to do something, there are 100 ways to do it. No one way is right or wrong. I'm just glad that we are given options to do things in different ways, so we can get comfortable with our processes.

Those are great tips. I love the context bar, but didnt know about the #3 tip. I will use that from now on. The overall pop-up menu functions in 2008 sure have left my command manager buttons awefully lonely!

Josh,

You will be excited to hear that your site is also iPhone friendly, with the exception of the flash based videos like The Blade. Apple in all its wisdom chose to highlight the fact it did youtube, but not the fact that it only will play the small number of non flash youtube videos available!

in 10 New Backgrounds for SolidWorks 2008 Drawings on SolidSmack
When I wrote about this earlier, I was envisioning a repository of images available for users to download, and to also upload. Looks like you got it started! I kind of pictured it like how the iPhone third party apps provide a somewhat endless list of custom backrounds. Perhaps a site to list them, and make them available is something that could be done by someone? www.solidworksbackrounds.com??? Or maybe over at Solidmentor? I will write an update to my post next week.
