in Ship, Not In Shape - philadelphia weekly online on philadelphia weekly online
Nice to see some more news. If only the story of the ship could be told on Prime time news, I feel that would be a huge start at getting the public awareness up, and getting the ship noticed once again

I agree however, that she belongs in New York. But honestly, New York, Norfolk, Newport News, Philadelphia, California, to me it does not matter, as long as he is preserved SOMEWHERE. She is a national icon, an engineering marval, a masterpiece of american pride. She is our flagship, the flagship of the United States of America, and she deserves to be admired and live on.

I have always hoped, if her restoration comes, to have her towed out into New York Harbor each year for the 4th of July. Those beautiful Red White and Blue funnels all light up, thats the kind of attention she deserves.

Lee Norberg Will,

You hit it on the head, "The Big U" should be at Pier 86 in New York- her home port which is still on her stern. A few commenters here on this article suggested that nothing should be done, where is one's sense of US pride and American technical maritime expertiese. Apathy will get you nowhere.

Many people helped to design, build, crew and be passengers on this STILL great ship. Let's not foget what she accomplished in her brief seventeen year career.

The ship is on her way for scrapping. According to International Law, the ship must first be decontaminated by a qualified and prepared shipyard, before it can head for a "lesser devolped" country like India

None of these steps have been taken. Which means her owners are breaking International Law. To avoid being tangled up in a court case, Hawaii refused to allow the ship to enter its waters, if it had allowed her to enter, they would be in violation of those laws.

Hence why they will not allow it.

Although our ultimate goal is t see the ship preserved as a floating Hotel/Museum/Whatever else will fit inside, possibly in Honolulu, this is a major step in preventing the Illegal scrapping of this historic ship
