in A Coming Paradigm Shift in (Online) Music? on Continuations
This pretty much encapsulates what I would want to say on the matter. If you want to ignore the last 50 years, go back even further. Prior to recorded music, composers often changed what they wrote to please their patrons (for a simple example, watch Ammadeus). Just like in the art world when now-famous artists would subsidize their artistic endeavors with commercial portraiture (for example), musicians for thousands of years have sold their skill to the highest bidder to allow them to do the things that they want.
Sometimes, that is awful for music. But, other times, it fuels the same innovation and creativity that drives technology or business. The Beatles directly impacted works by the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys. It made them make choices they might not have made in order to compete in that marketplace. Art doesn't exist in some vacuum, and that is particularly true in our world today.

Even digital sales make less money overall, the profit margins are significantly higher because there is no cost for CD duplication or distribution. It won't make up for the entire difference, but it does make a difference.
