Thanks for using my presentation - greatly appreciated :) Apparently Google are now planning on removing Page Rank from their search bar (http://www.searchcowboys.com/google/1145), so I guess we'll have to work out what the 4th P of social media is... Platform perhaps?

Why can't Twitter let you, or people like Scoble follow whoever they want, whereas 99% of Twitter users, including myself, will never follow 10,000 people... I don't need to follow that many people, and I don't really want to either!

Personally I don't think this competition is creating anything positive for 3 as a brand and is essentially a waste of money. Brands should only engage in social media to create meaningful positive conversations... not silly competitions.

And a nice reminder of what I should be doing - leaving more comments!

Google Reader is fab for reading feeds buts its downside is that you have to open a new tab to leave a comment - and it can get a little messy if you read a lot of feeds (currently catching up with 300 unread blog posts!)

Anyhow, I am starting my new resolution right here, right now... more commenting! ;)

Hi Jason,

I just thought I would step in as Michael Litman is a very good friend of mine. In my opinion both social media (whether blogs, Twitter or online communities) can help get a job but offline networking is also useful.

Michael contacted last year via my blog asking me if I could help him get a job in social media. He firstly started freelance as I introduced him to a friend of mine that I met at a netwoking event.
Here we have an offline / online scenario

A few months later one of my Twitter contacts contacted me asking me if I knew anyone who was looking for a job - I referred him to Michael.

Here we have the opposite scenario - online/offline

I think as far as the UK market is concerned, having a social media definitely helps with job hunting and will gradually become more and more important. Out of 5 people in my office and 4 of us blog!

It's really nice post Michael - well done! A lot of websites could do with a face lift - there's nothing worse than being greeted by a homepage that looks like it was built pre-historic times, or on the other hand of the spectrum, a flash download request!

Agencies should ask themselves the following question - what does my brand stand for? What message are we trying to convey? What image does our website convey to potential customers?

I think your blog layout represents you very well - a guy who likes tech, but there's also this feeling of building your brand in the process (paperclips, cellotape etc...)

I really like the Frank website - I really like the handwritten feel to it although the site might be a little confusing to some.

I'll have to get back to you about my fav website at a later stage as nothing comes to mind at the mo! That's a finding in itself I guess!

Great post Mikey - to me this essentially reinforces the need for WOM Marketing/Social Media presence as consumers turn to the net to find information and recommendations about products, as the Internet impacts on the traditional decision-making process.

I'd love to see the brands mentioned in the list get involved with social media/digital PR/ buzz or WOM Marketing...

Thanks to you both for your replies. Zeezat, out of curiosity, do you agree with my comments on wikis, online communities and blogs - let me know what you think!

Eoin, I do agree with each of your points:
- Skype: I definitely to change my settings! Are you a Skype user yourself? What are your thoughts on the 'Skype me' option?

- Wikipedia: I also agree that wikipedia is pretty accurate however I did come accross a number of appalling articles however wikepedia moderators are doing a pretty good job when it comes down to tackling spam and abuse on the posts.

I discovered a new interesting wiki today so a post should follow shortly.

I totally agree - we're only at the beginning of the blogging era - check out www.links.net (created in 1994) or www.scripting.com (created in 1997) who are supposedly the first ever blogs on the net - scary how far we've gone

Yes, blogs can be useful marketing tool for businesses however, think of McDonalds who didn't allow comments and landed in hot waters...

I really do think that banks are partially responsible for the growing amounts of debt in the UK - you’re basically in debt by the time you graduate, add credit cards, mortgages, that’s it you’re bankrupt!

Shane - I totally agree. Myspace arevery clever, and as a myspace user, I particularly enjoy the site's versatility i.e. being able to easily customise my page. Saying that, yes there are lots of inactive pages, lots of inactive blogs which do inflate the metric. I think that with the evolution of the www, the information we look at will have to be re-organised at some stage... More will follow shortly on this

I think you understood what I meant... When l'Oreal changed their catch-phrase 'Because I am worth it' to 'Because you are worth it', that certainly was a clever move. It has become fashionable to use and abuse the 'you' in their adverts, hence the fashion faux-pas.

Thanks for the comment! You are right, brand confusion is a big opportunity. And the decision tree can turn this opportunity into a strength. The decision to purchase or not, is rarely made in-store hence the importance of floor labelling, wobblers, stickers etc to attract consumers' attention.

I find that ads I see on the Tube tend to stick more as they're usually quite original especially when you go up and down the escalators (for e.g. the Maestro campaign).

I use Windows Movie Maker for my video applications and it can be downloaded for free!

Neil, good point! Yes, there sometimes seems to be a certain degree of disconnection between the creative where and how the ad will be positioned.

Going back to the above picture, I think people are meant to look at it on the opposite platform to understand the message. Bother cloever and frustrating.

Neil - I think that if you can say hello, thank you and good-bye in another language, it definitely is an ice-breaker.

The Brits are not good at languages because:

1) You don't learn grammar at school. If you don't know your own grammar, how are you supposed to learn another language?

2) French, Italian and Spanish all derive from Latin and their grammatical structure and vocabulary is quite similar. English grammar is slightly different which makes it harder for Anglo-Saxons to learn foreign languages

3) The rest is simply down to talent and passion!

Metaphorically its like having your keys, you dont feel safe without it - I think that says it all really.

So in essence there is a direct relation with ur phone, different needs, circustances influences the other side of things like functionality and price plans etc.

In psychology taking things deeper, ur friend seems to like the simple things, which reflected in is phone and preference when asked about the car comparison.

Hi Jason,

There are currently a lot of debates happening over here about using cartoons in ads. The Advertising Standards Agency is thinking of banning cartoon characters in commercials aimed at children.

The Paddington bear and Marmite are well-established British icons and do certainly and unlikely yet interesting combination - I can't wait to watch the ad actually!

I read that parody book - it's hilarious!

Hi Phil,

Looks like we are more acvanced in Canada than you are. We've had modems and now the dongles - both do the smae thing but in a slightly different format. All mobile networks have one in their portfolio so we are spoilt for choice. Perhaps too much choice!

I only just recently joined Plurk so it's a little too early for me to comment on this app. Same story ith Jaiku. I would suggest you stick with the one you find most user-friendly and the one where you feel you have the most interesting and engaging community.

Yup - you did go a little Marxist here ;) I think you're a little too harsh with the Wodka website... I personally really like it.

I do agree with you that the ads won't stop binge drinking... I had a heavy night on Saturday and I did feel a little ashamed for drinking too much (luckily I didn't do anything embarrassing) and I kept thinking about the ads this morning... so I guess they did an impact on me and my behaviour.

This Scottish ad has popped up a few times in the last week. I think it’s really nice, and the fact that it was a girl really made me chuckle, not think but chuckle. It’s very like the prodigy video – definitely some influence there.

At times however, I feel that the creative overshadows the message, and this is natural, when the message is hard to deliver, and to a certain extent this is a criticism of some of the binge work… I have thought - ‘ok, nice visual work, funny and a bit shocking’ but that feeling has gone already.

I think Flickr managed to address the integration with other Social Media networks such as Facebook, Wordpress or the Shozu app on my mobile fairly well... I am a happy bunny anyway, that said, you are clearly more involved than I am...

I think there'll be some interesting changes in terms of blog layouts - some wordpress themes already incorporate a lifestreaming widget... I think blogs will become a lot more interactive which will make conversations more lively easier to keep on top of as a result.

Some blogs are setting up FriendFeed rooms where bloggers can debate certain topics relating to a blog / blog post which clearly shows that commenting on blogs need to be improved.

Blogs need to evolve and I am pretty sure we will notice some interesting changes in the coming months...

Lea, I also feel torn. On the one hand, I think it's a great thing for brands to engage with bloggers, but on the other hand I think too many digital PR agencies don't get it, which is why I am a little concerned about this list being made available to hundreds of PR agencies. I have seen too many bad / boring / non-conversational pitches around which is the reason why I am a little sceptical.

Phil, I think they look at both your influence (technorati authotrity, page rank) as well as your various online presences. Big Brother is watching you... :)

Carole - whilst I totally understand that such service can cut down research time, I am concerned that not many PR agencies know how to deal with blogger engagement, and will not bother forging relationships with bloggers...

Welcome! I rarely pay attention to status updates andin fact rarely update mine, which is probably the reason why I don't get bored of Facebook.

Facebook = friends, Twitter = business and networking :)

It just seems to me that iPhone users have got used to using apps, and may not see a real benefit in signing up .

I just wanted to point out once again that I love Twe2 and I feel that it definitely improves the overall Twitter experience.

FriendFeed has been one of these tools that everybody signed up for but never really used; fortunately for FriedFeed, it looks like this is about to change...

I really like the fact FriendFeed helps me cut through the noise and I can now easily follow my favourite blogs from around the world!

I also use Facebook as an RSS Feed - despite my Facebook friends having nothing to do with Social Media, Facebook comes up as one of my top traffic sources.

Now I need to encourage my Facebook/real-life friends to start commenting on my blog! ;)

1) RSS: Some of my friends on Facebook are fellow bloggers. I am currently part of the Bathroom Blogfest group as well as the W-list group - would be really cool indeed if we could have a widget on our blogs to advertise them. That might even drive more bloggers to Facebook!

2) Be nice to outsiders: indeed - I haven't found a nice music player yet to put on my page but it would be pretty cool to be able to export the myspace or trig.com music player

We're doing mobile market research where we ask respondents to text us every time they see a specific ad on TV/radio etc.

Marketing is truly getting mobile - and it's very exciting!

Interesting post - I am currently working on a couple of projects for Sony Ericsson in relation to gaming. Poeple play with their games a few times and then get bored and tend not to play after a few weeks...

Do you think giving away free games tend to keep people interested?

You know what, although the iphone looks great, I would never consider buying one simply because it does not have a keyboard... I stopped using my XDA Orbit 2 because of this and have reverted back to using my old Samsung E900!

Tell me about trying to get friends to join facebook - what a headache! Funnily enough, although I am quite tecchie I still haven't looked into netvibes... well I started but quickly gave up... but yes, there is definitely an opportunity for marketers to send news/freebies etc for people who are into brands... a bit like the favourite pages apps on facebook (hope you know which one I mean!)

I've had a LinkedIn account for ages but only started using it recently as my aim was to get a job in the digital world, and all digital people use LinkedIn (unlike poeple in my previous industry). It's been a useful tool to meet and get introduced to new people. I also like the fact you can ask questions to the community.

The QR code on the Nokia N95 is much better than on the iPhone - personal opinion. QR Codes are slowly appearing on certain newsapaper in the UK. Not many people know what they are about at the moment.

By the way, have you heard of mippin.com? It's a service that mobilizes websites (or a blog) - they also use QR code technology. I met someone from their team at a mobile conference a few weeks ago and told them to get in touch with you ;)

Wow! Facebook certainly have the potential to challenge Twitter with this, although I wonder how many of my non-geek friends will actually change their status 5-10 times a day (equivalent of Twitter updates)... It'll be interesting to observe Facebook behaviours in the coming year...

It's quite expensive because I have to buy out my existing contract in order to sign up for a new contract (£25 per month x 10 months) to get the iPhone + the price of the handset (£140 for a 16GB). I am a little annoyed with O2 for not letting me upgrade early as I have been a customer for the past 9 years... Oh well...
