in Buying Social Votes Misses The Point, Or Why My Vote Is Not For Sale. Or Loan. Or Lease. on Free Traffic Tips
If votes could be purchased all meaning of the votes is lost. Yes giving a look-see to mates submissions is cool but that's as far as it goes.

in Googlebot Just Got The Boot. on Sage Blogger
There is always robots="noindex, follow" which might be worth a thought (although the tag in question spits out all spiders).

Personally I think you deserve a cultural icon status for "sticking to the man" so to speak. Google may have become old and slow and so in time a new predator will rise to bite it in the neck. Why do you think they, like yahoo, are diversifying with investments?

in OpenAds Testing: Help Me Out And Click That Banner on Sage Blogger
Open Ads does give you very much the raw data without any prettying up that some companies use. I run awstats in addition to the OpenAds server and the two together provide a very nice overview. Awstats gives me a clue as to what is going on as a whole while OpenAds is better at the zone to zone stuff.

I use OpenAds as the delivery agent for all my adverts it makes adding adverts to lots of sites much simpler. It also means that if an affiliate partner from DGM stops being active I can drop them at one location and that's all the work I need to do.

As tools go I have to say it is useful if not especially well coded and by that I mean the code works very well but is no fun at all to edit.

in Is BlogRush A Waste Of Your Time? on Vlad Zabblotskyy - A politically Incorrect Blogger
In my not exactly humble opinion the only thing that is shocking is the amount of horse manure that has been written on the subject. It is a shiny web 0.9 product - back in the day it did not work and not a lot has changed. A web 2.0 looking traffic/surf exchange would be more productive (but only just).

in How Would You Improve Your Blog Or Blogging? on Andy Beard - Internet Business Systems Discussion
(in this comment I have used () instead of html pointies as I was not sure what your comment system would do to it).

Your best bet(s) for the headline is to create a custom plugin.

In Nucleus I would create a string such as $br$ that would contextually change to a real br or simply be removed. I would probably create a "skinvar" so that I can use the new tag to out put the br version but everywhere else show no br.

In wordpress I believe the theme engine is direct php so you could create a function wp_br_header();

There is a second very cool option that would work with the wp_br_header() suggestion - assume that when you type the ":" in a title you are doing a multi level title and use str_replace to swap ":" for ":(br /)" which would only happen where your template requested the specially formatted headline but would be "normal" in all other places.

In other news you might be well advised to move some of the under post disclaimer into the side bar. The reason is that it is a long scroll to comment and a skip to comments #link would cause the text to be skipped. I know I have developed an ad blindness to everything between the post and the comment box other than the Don't Be An Idiot badge.

However with all these things it could just be me...

I experienced something similar and the effect lasted all month. I actually need to upgrade my server to cope with the new traffic level. I wrote a post called "how to Andy Beard your blog" to look at how to... well Andy Beard it.

in How Akismet Hosed My WordPress Blog on The Habitation of Justice
It does not help you too much but the NucleusCMS community have no commercial core and so is more "classically open source". The anti spam community got together and simply wrote plugins, piles of em in every form imaginable. There are two good captcha the one the core writers made and one I made that uses RE:Captcha. Some guys even came up with an anti-spam API that is in core for CVS (meaning next release it's part of the framework) and the result is that a sort of survival of the fittest kicked in and for say the three or four plugs that sucked one or two ruled. Of those some had keen developers and others were picked up on by better coders and expanded.

I'm thinking WP needs far more competing plugins for spam. While Akismet is known to be very effective it is not the only game in town and as a default is very privacy intrusive.

Just my 0.02 * 4 worth.
