in Is Credit Suisse Going For Broke With ETFs? on Zero Hedge
Tyler, you said CS is backed up by the Swiss National Bank. I believe CS has avoided taking any capital injections from the Swiss National Bank, and got capital from Middle Eastern investors. You may want to check your facts.

Also, commenter John is right that CS has the ability to create ETF securities for buyers. Anecdotally, happened to one of my clients when they wanted to go long a sector ETF and we chose to trade with CS>

in Why not LDAP? on Lucas Rockwell
It's not a problem with LDAP itself, but whether or not it can scale out. The cost you end up paying in a distributed LDAP server is for consistency, since LDAP is designed with strong consistency in mind, it would likely need to be (a) completely replicated and (b) require some strong ordering mechanism (like Paxos). It's not a problem of scaling up, it's a problem of scaling out. If you have an example of a scaled OUT LDAP system, I'd be interested in seeing it.

lucasrockwell In my current work we use Sun's LDAP proxy server which allows you to very easily scale out LDAP. For instance, if you have 100M users, you could easily split them up into n clusters (at least 2 LDAP servers -- each a multi-master -- in a cluster) of people (maybe 2-10M per cluster), and then the proxy server (based on the DN) would know where the user is located. Of course, if you didn't know where someone was (because you were not doing a base search using an exact DN) then there is more work involved in finding the person.

in Why not LDAP? on Lucas Rockwell
But seriously, LDAP's scalability is *not* performance scalability. In a modern key-value store, being unable to handle tens of thousands of operations per second per node would be completely unacceptable.

lucasrockwell I am not sure what you are suggesting... Are you suggesting that LDAP can not handle tens of thousands of operations per second?

or

On my MacBook, I can get OpenDS 1.3RC6 to do around 7000 requests/second (and this is a Java app). Sun's c-based DS is much faster.

Nice advice, but this one made me laugh:

"Be honest. Under promise and over deliver."

In other words...

"Be honest. Lie."

Some of us cannot access video at our respective work places, yet are super eager to at least know the topic of your post.

Otherwise, if you want to write a play by play of the video, that would be appreciated.

in A Chilly Welcome on Blown Mortgage
You lost me with "While I’m not a numbers person...". I learned last year that it is an open joke in the journalism industry that reporters do not know math and should not be permitted in the same room as a statistic. Until just two years ago, the accreditation standards for schools of journalism had no (zero) math or statistics requirements. The typical journalist stopped taking math after algebra in high school and today, according to one industry survey, has math skills equivalent to a typical middle school student.
Pathetic. And I am not making this up - this is for real.

Most journalists went into writing, in part, because they did not like arithmetic and mathematics.

Because of this, numerous news reports mangle the data and the interpretation beyond measure to the point that "news" becomes fiction.

When I see a journalist admit that she is not a numbers person, and presumably,j does not have the necessary depth of understanding to interpret data and statistics, I stop reading. Trying to write about a finance topic without being a numbers person is lame and pointless.

What we will see instead is stories that "start with the anecdote", follow with a group of "he said, she said" quotes, find a single number to give it the feel of "hard data" and end with a emotional twang about how someone was hurt.

debbie Eric:

You seem like a very serious guy who has some anger issues. Life is way too short to be so pent up.

Maybe you are one of those mortgage folks who no longer has a job thanks to all of the bad practices that have put many people out of house and home these past few years... ???

I became a writer 20+ years ago and I have been quite successful. I write for 20+ publications around the country. I've been lucky enough to have interviewed some very bright businesspeople, CEOs of large companies, celebrities and regular people, too. Heck, I've even won some awards. As for math, I'm not Einstein, but I can balance my check book and figure out stats.

It's a shame you are so defensive and bitter.

in Letter: I'm voting for Obama and Biden on The Eagle-Tribune
Amazing how badly the cons want to make this election about anything _other_ than a referendum on the job they've done for the last eight years.

The simple facts are this: Republicans have screwed over the middle and working class with policies that are skewed to the wealthy and the corporations. They do this every time they seize power, and then try distract the public with non-issues.

Republicans are playing the obstructionism role of in congress with one goal: keep the Democrats from doing the will of the people, and then propagate a lie about a do-nothing congress.

These people are sick to their very core. It's time for a change. Enough is Enough.

in Baby baptized before receiving lifesaving surgery on The Eagle-Tribune
The way I understood it from confirmation class (in a Congregationalist church) is that babies are baptized as a promise to be raised by their parents and community in the Christian faith.

Then, as adults (or high schoolers in most places I know), they are asked to affirm their faith in the church and join the congregation as a member.

Teachings may be different in the Catholic and Baptist churches, but that's what I was taught.

RickMacMerc Mine defaulted to Google--so that's not even a difference. The difference is under the hood and in the interface. You may have to play with it for a while before you notice though.

in McCain runs a cowardly sleazy ad, early (Scripting News) on Scripting News
I was prepared to see a salacious political ad. Instead I saw a typical political ad. Not a very good one IMO.

I'm one of those undecided voters. Maybe I don't see the outrageousness since I'm not drinking anyone's kool-aid.

And Josh Marshall's comparison to Harold Ford is a real stretch. So... the video is supposed to subliminally suggest that Obama's banging Paris Hilton? GTFO
