wonderful comments, all!

I love to read - always have - so my kids grew up seeing me read. I've logged a LOT of hours turned around backwards from the front seat of the car (oh seatbelt laws) reading to the backseat as we traveled cross-country with 4 kids.

My youngest is a 5th grade teacher and living at home for the first time in several years - and she still loves it when I read aloud to her!

And I still do voices!

OK, I consider myself to be a relatively bright person - and only understood about 1/3 of what I just diligently read.

A little help please - like an example of how this might be of use to an archaic blogger, preferably with some kind of practical illustration?

Remember - I'm not sure if an MP3 player is the same thing as and iPod and I don't read newspapers of any kind.

I think, then, that I put an RSS possiblity? on my blog and have signed up for same from you and ESI because when you publish something new on this blog, it pops into my email.

Xanga had something similar but you signed up through "subcriptions" to other blogs - and it was lovely because I knew which blogs had been updated so didn't have to go searching through each one separately to see who had updated and where I hadn't left an encouraging comment.

Hey - I think I just read an ESI post on your blog - when did he become an editor?

Seriously - this is a wonderful post and a great encouragement! It is why I do what I do - why I go back to the lab yet again when the data have made no consistent sense for a year, why I keep reading the scientific literature, keep writing grants (very much like Medieval torture for me) and curriculum and trying to learn to be a better teacher.

If I don't investigate, I may never answer a question that benefits people, if I don't teachwell, not only do I not impart the information they need, I don't build the relationships I need so that even earn the opportunity to give them a glimpse of the Christ that I know!

I think that I also feel compelled - just not as often as you - to blog. Not really sure why but since it wells up in me like an itch that needs to be scratched, and I have prayed about it - I'm assuming that's the Holy Spirit - although what He is doing and why He would do it through a blog is beyond me!

So sorry - hope you feel better soon! I have been this way as well for a couple of months and it has taken its toll on many things.

One thing to remember - God had a reason for allowing it to happen, and to happen when it did. So trust Him to make you well in His season - and catch up only what is necessary -

My daughter is a 5th graded (1st year) teacher in a charter school in a rough inner city neighborhood.

When I read your review, my first thought was, maybe I could do a read-a-loud to her students with this book! It would have adventure and fun voices and still get across the truth of scripture - and most of all, what fun to read aloud again and see kids sit on the edge of their seats!

It made me think back to the years when mine were small and I had the great joy of reading fun books aloud to them. So, for me, your ability to evoke the memory makes the book worth looking up!

thanks for the book suggestion - I'll get it for her quickly. And thanks for sharing that there were tears of frustration - she has a "friend" teaching high school chemistry as a 1st year teacher about 800 miles away and he is struggling too - and thinking the mission field in Turkey was much easier if you can imagine.

I love the poem - and truthfully, it actually captures some of what I feel when I sit down at the piano, mine or anyone elses - so I know that you understand something of who I am. This is something I appreciate about poetry - it evokes a response in me that tells me that someone understands something about me and I can identify with another person, the poet.

I love the picture and the story that brings back so many memories - spewed beets, prayers of "God bless the salt, pepper, ketchup........." everything on the table as the food grew cold and the parents impatient. But the youngest is now 23 and I miss those exhausting but more simple days.

Having you ever read "Shepherding a Child's Heart" by Tripp? It's a great resource for 3 year old scoundrels! Training is hard work, no matter what - whether we are training them or God is training us!

They are, by the way, absolutely adorable in their matching outfits!

Makes me remember the time that my Christopher, then about 7, now about 32, was approached by our pastor. He was small, round and very, very serious (and an excellent expositor of the Word!). He leaned down to shake hand with Christopher, who preceeded to give him a sideways high-five just as hard as he could manage (he, his dad and older brother used this as a method of "trading licks") Can you even imagine the look on the very gentle and dignified pastor's face? He didn't hardly know what a high 5 was; I thought I might die and my tombstone would read, "worst mom ever!"

He also used exponential multiplication - one Jesus, a few loaves and fish divided by 12 disciples multiplied to over 5000 - just the way a good virus is supposed to work - a good sneeze should innoculate way more than the one sneezer!

the tipping point was interesting - made me think about what it takes to motivate and move small groups of people too.

a good thought and post Marcus - it is never good to assume or to think we can read minds. Even when the evidence looks most condemning, we need to exhibit grace and ask, hoping for the best answer. How many people have needlessly been "killed" because someone assumed and attacked instead of asked?

Thanks for posting this Marcus. I will be interested in going over and reading what has been going on. I've just come from a conference where, out of 600 or so, I think that I may have been the only believer there. I do have the joy of returning tomorrow to a congregation where I am not the only scientist there - and that is a great blessing indeed.

We have, as a Sunday School class, been studying world views - the major ones anyway - and how that basis alters the way all of life is interpreted. It is so sad to me that most of the Christian community decides that Science is not an unfolding of God's truth, no matter how poorly interpreted by the scientists, but rather somehow antagonistic to faith.

I agree with RSJ, rhetoric and ridicule do not make good arguments for anything, much less one who looks through the lense of logic.
