in Twitter Search Engine Is Very, Very, Broken - louisgray.com on louisgray.com
Even if it worked well, there is some flexibility missing in their search.

For example, on twitter.com, we cannot search profile information. Only user names, first name, last name. As a user, I was trying to find out someone I had followed but forget the name but could not do any search based on the information I remembered.

I see Twitter search like a proof of concept. It has lot of potential but it can't be fully exploited yet.

in Rogers Announces Abusive iPhone Rates in Canada on Fred Brunel

I'm quite sick about all the telcos in Canada.

These Rogers plans for the iPhone are scandalous and disgusting.

Personally, I wanted an iPhone but I'll stick with my Blackberry by principle. I won't encourage Rogers and make them think these rates are a good idea. Because they're not.

I sadly hope that we'll have tons of billing horror stories and that bloggers and traditional media will cover these and put Rogers (and their stock) to shame.

The sad part about Rogers' and other telcos commercial activities is how they are slowing down Canadian technical innovation and entrepreneurship in the mobile space in particular and the telecommunication space in general.

in Why Did Facebook Give Up on Beacon? on AllFacebook
Instead you can now automatically feed items in the mini-feed from other sites in Facebook through the "import" link. They are regularly adding support for other sites.

The wording is strange, but it does what you want to do. However, you have to know to click the "import" link and it's not really well publicized.

Thanks for the quick overview.

Seems quite interesting. It's refreshing to see something really new and innovating from Microsoft.

If they can somehow quickly fulfill this vision to a multitude of devices, it might very well have a bright future.

in Era of blogger’s control is over on Scobleizer
I think this trend might resuscitate the full vs partial feed discussion.

I understand that someone who blog for a living and has original content might be tempted to implement partial feeds. Discussions could still happen somewhere else, but to get the full article a visit to the ad-supported blog would be a must.

Or maybe we will see an increase of sponsored feeds?

I very much prefer the feeds I subscribe to having full content but I understand how it can become problematic for some.

in Microsoft wins Facebook bid? Here’s the insider scoop on why… on Scobleizer
If Microsoft wins this bidding round for Facebook, I think they'll want to keep the platform open.

As they are known to cater to developers, it might just be one of many reasons to really be in the Facebook bandwagon. Being more present in the first successful Web OS is not something to scuff at.

in Microsoft’s new maps are stunning on Scobleizer
Well,

I live in Montreal, Canada and we do not have bird-eye view yet in Live Maps. Bummer!

However, the satellite view on Live Maps for where I live is light-years beyond what Google Maps give. I would say the images and details are about 50 times better on Live Maps. The resolution and color fidelity are incredible.

As a regular Google Maps user (I never use Live Maps), I must say I was pretty stunned.

Also, the usability is pretty good. Well, at least better than Google Map's. When zooming, it actually stops zooming when I'm at the highest zoom level. On Google Maps, if I zoom too much, the map is replaced by a bunch of ugly messages saying "We are sorry, but we don't have imagery at this zoom level for this region. Try zooming out for a broader look". When comparing the 2, if find Google's approach amazingly stupid. Sorry, but if you want to show a message fine, but don't erase the best view I can get!

Weird. I never noticed the Google Maps deficiencies before trying out Live Maps tonight.

However, I doubt that I switch over Live Maps to get directions. Google Maps is on my Blackberry 8800 and works good enough.

in Laughing at Facebook’s “older” users on Scobleizer
I'm using Facebook for business networking. Or maybe I should say I use it to network with people in my industry. I think it works really well. In Montreal, it is becoming quite rare that people I meet do not have a Facebook account. This makes networking easier.

Click on my name for my blog post wrap-up on how it works well for me.

in Danah is confused by Facebook’s fans on Scobleizer

in Danah is confused by Facebook’s fans on Scobleizer
For point #1, will you help me test my Facebook app with 5000 friends? :-)

In my spare time, I'm working for fun on a Facebook app and I currently doubt that it would scale well with 5000 friends. :-( With this possibility in mind, there are some things that I could do with the interface to make it possible. I just want to point out that the problem is not in the scalability of the platform, but in the scalability of the apps being developed. If developers don't take into account that a Facebook member can have many hundreds of friends, it is doubtful it will scale well.

What I think is needed for the platform - and there are rumors they are working on it - is the possibility of defining lists of friends. For the application I have in mind, it wouldn't make sense to use it for up to 5000 friends. It would make sense to use it for a list of predefined friends (family, co-workers, influencers, etc.)

A bit of time off is always a good idea when stressed. Enjoy your time at home, read a book, take a walk and enjoy life.

Take care of yourself.

And when you come back, keep some quality time for you away of the stress. It works for me.

@Rodgers: the point is that Guthrie's department does more than deliver.

He runs the teams that builds IIS, ASP.NET, Atlas, CLR, Compact Framework, Windows Forms, Commerce Server, Visual Web Developer 2005 and Visual Studio Tools for WPF.

.NET and Visual Studio is an area were Microsoft delivers and impresses with true innovation and solid releases.

in Why Microsoft doesn’t deserve Facebook on Scobleizer
At this point, if I ran Facebook, I would sell. Since thing move so fast, you never know what could happen before an IPO. And it would be quite enough money for a lifetime already.

About the other points. I am not sure.

I think Microsoft might be able to get it right. It's exactly what they need. It's a good platform to expand upon. Anyone in the tech industry you tries Facebook, gets it pretty fast on how it is powerful. For that reason, I would give them the benefit of the doubt to improve it. And, with the focus on the API and developers, that segment is at least something Microsoft understands well.

In any case, if they do buy it, Microsoft really need to put all execs on Facebook for a month before touching anything.
