in The Great Photo Sharing Conundrum on Creeva's World 2.0
Hilarious! Actually, your mom kinda falls into the somewhat-older generation, at least she's asking for pictures via email. When it comes to my soon-to-be 79-year-old father, I have to print copies and send them snail mail. But I don't mind. ;-)
I hope she takes a look at Flickr, I bet she'll get a real kick out of it (assuming she has access to a broadband connection).
Oh and OMG ADORABLE BABY btw!!

in Obama’s First Mistake In My Eyes on Creeva's World 2.0
You have a valid argument for not delaying, and I might even agree with you, except for one thing. The government program that sends people coupons to use when buying converter boxes has run out of money as of January 4. If you request a coupon now, you are put on a "waiting list." And I think for that reason alone they need to delay the roll-out.
It's very surprising to me how many people are still receiving analog TV over the air, through an antenna. Apparently it is surprising to the government, as well. ;-)

The problem is that it will always be a problem of not protecting everyone. They extend this for 20 years and there will still be people with analog TVs that attempt to get over the air transmissions.
It's also not the governments job to make sure everyone can reach and have TV. I'm sure that I sound callous, but when you are looking at an over arching issue such as this it's always better to take yourself out of the problem.
People with cable, they are fine - people with Satelite - they are fine. In most of the Ohio people actually don't have the capability anyways to get OTA signals - I live in a black out area where I can get one channel that doesn't really come in.
If the govenment is truly worried about the people that have not migrated over - give them PBS - since PBS gets government money - let them exist past the cut off date. All major networks should be forced to migrate over - emergency information can still be passed over by PBS.
If major broadcasters and advertisers are worried about loosing viewers because of the change, maybe they would kick in money for the converter boxes to save their own bottom line. The longer we wait the problem won't be solved - only faced with adversity do people actually change - the fear of adversity just scares people into thinking they may have to change. They then complain and espouse fears of doom and gloom instead of rationally looking at the problem. By giving them the actual pain things can change.

in A Month With Mom - Part 20 - I Want It, So You Can’t Have It on Creeva's World 2.0
I've been reading these all along and I have to say they're fascinating, though maybe not for the reasons that you think. I'll just summarize my thoughts so far:
1. Your mom is obviously a very shallow person. It also sounds like she was a little too selfish and self-centered to be a very good mom.
2. On the other hand, you were all fed, clothed, received medical care, etc., etc, growing up yes? My point being - she may not be a very good mom, but there are much WORSE moms.
3. A lot of your complaints about her sound pretty nit-picky to a third party. I'm sure that to you, just about everything she does is annoying and obnoxious and irritating. But to an outsider, a lot of the things she does sound like...things that middle-aged women do. However...
4. Your opinion and view of her has obviously been colored by the truly negative things she HAS done in the past, and therefore every one of her transgressions is magnified to you.
5. Your mom seems to have a bad habit of using people, but remember: people allow themselves to be used. Your grandparents in particular seem to have no problem allowing her to manipulate them. Is it right? No. Are they adults, and capable of deciding for themselves whether to allow this? Yes (at least as far as we know - if at some point due to age or health they become unable to make these decisions on their own, then there would be a real problem).
I think in general you're handling the mom situation the right way, which is to just let her do her own thing, as long as it's not hurting you or your own family. I feel pretty bad about some of the things she said about, to, and in front of your sister. That passive-aggressive shit is not cool, not from anyone, and especially not from a mother. But what can you do about that, other than give your sister your emotional support and help her do her own thing as well? Nothing.
People suck, don't they?

in My Estranged Mother E-mails Me to Say - I Told You So on Creeva's World 2.0
Wow. Obviously I have no idea what happened between you and your mother and why you're estranged, but it does seem very sad. Sometimes people let us down, and it's always hardest to forgive when those people are family. Speaking from my own experience, one of my biggest regrets in life are the years that I spent somewhat distant from my own mother, because I blamed her for a lot of the emotional problems that I was dealing with in therapy. I wish now that I'd found a way to forgive and try to understand her sooner, so that I could have had more time with her as an adult, before her tragically untimely death from breast cancer in 1994.
Naturally, you know what's best for you and for your child. But I hope you keep an open mind.

I'll be focusing some stories in November on my mother. Maybe some people will understand, maybe some people will just tell me I'm in the wrong - if they do think I am in the wrong - that's fine - doesn't mean I'll change how I will handle things.
To give you a brief synopsis - things my mother taught me for life.
A person is not to be judged by what they do, they are to be judged by how they appear. A good person owns nice thing. It's better to buy things for your house before buying things for your kids, since you are giving them a nice house to live after all. It's better to have friends that don't care about you, but make you feel good about yourself instead of people you can get emotionally involved with. Your never wrong so don't admit to it. Even if their is a credible witness everyone will believe you, because why would you be lying.
You can treat your children badly and call them names, but heaven help you if they call you the same names. Your children should respect you and love you because they gave birth to you, not because you have to earn it at - so don't bother earning it.
That's just some of what my mother has taught me. Through this whole thing she thinks it's my father (her ex) that turned me against her. Nothing could be further from the truth. My father has actually encouraged me to make good with her - she just can't believe that she is in the wrong or at fault for anything.

Ok I'll vent into some upcoming blog posts on this, then maybe I can put it behind me again.

in Can Anyone Name This Movie For Me? on Creeva's World 2.0
Gah! This very movie was discussed in "Ask the AV Club" (http://www.avclub.com/content/topics/Ask_The_A....) this summer. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the movie, and just browsing through the last few months of columns, I couldn't find the reference to it. But if you have time, you can probably find it in the archive there.

in Visting Commentors Sites | Creeva's World 2.0 on Creeva's World 2.0
I do the same! However, I get so few comments on my blog, it's not hard to pay attention to the ones that are there. Let me revise that: I get so few GENUINE comments on my blog. Spam comments, on the other hand, are abundant - thank goodness for Akismet. It really freaks me out that spammers are still posting hundreds of comments a week on random blogs, hoping to get their latest scam or ad out there.
(BTW I had to revise this comment...the first time I did it, I guess I mentioned one of the "herbal" products that the spammers often advertise...and the site thought I was a spammer! HA HA!)

in Suggestion Box on The Flog
Felicia - website looks GREAT! And I must admit, you got me hooked on Twitter too. Between you and Merlin Mann and Kottke and so son, there's a lot of great stuff to read in short little snippets throughout the day. I love that!
Anyway, I'd love to read some stuff about your background, if you don't mind sharing. How you got into acting, writing, etc.; what was it like to work on Buffy; what are some of your favorite past projects and why; etc. (If you've already covered material like this I'm sorry - I didn't see it here but would love a pointer to it.)
I also like the suggestion for a quick video blog every month or so. You're hilarious and charming on camera and all your fans would eat it up for sure.

in 20:07 contest winner - and one more chance to win on Shooting Down Pictures
The funny thing is, that first screengrab looks SO familiar to me. I definitely recognize the two men and one women at the right of the screen. I'm sure whatever film this is from, I've seen it. I just can't place it. Frustrating...someone hurry up and guess correctly!

I couldn't begin to guess on most of these, but I'm dying to know the answers. I'll be watching for the results!
Thanks , we like him - besides the 60 day return policy has already passed, so I guess we're stuck with him
