What would also be cool would be the ability to display a screen overlay of text with the photographer's name, photo title, and description if any. Also the license info. I haven't looked at the app yet so I don't know if it already does this.

The Gallery application does something like this for paintings. It has descriptive text overlays. You can see it On Demand on Comcast.

Flickr also needs to make sharing for CC licensed photos easier.

When someone chooses to share their photo with a CC license, flickr needs to make available the HTML code so someone can copy that and share the photo.

This HTML code should include the attribution that the photographer wants, like Name, a link back, and the CC license displayed.

I called Mike on his cellphone at 11:45 the other night with what to me was an urgent request... I had uploaded a video and scheduled to auto-post the next night at 7:00 PM. This was a behind the scenes video of my mom on ABC World News. :-)

When I posted it to blip.tv, the status said the cross-post was processing...

To me that could have meant that when it was done with the flash conversion, it would auto-post that night... I had agreed to hold off until the ABC report aired, so I didn't want it to go live until then.

So I left Mike a voice message and he called back within 5 minutes.

He explained that the auto-post process would check to see the criteria on my upload and wait until my go live time of 7:00 the next night.

He also apologized for not picking up the phone intitially... Whoa.

No apology needed.

Another example of excellent service by Mike Hudack and blip.tv.

Hi,
I saw you comment on my mom's blog. That was really nice. It's so cool that so many more people can see how excited she is by learning new things and meeting new people.

She was just telling me that when she started blogging, she had no fear. Like Arinana Huffington, my mom is fearless!

As for the Hyatt San Jose, this MOTEL was a big dissapointment. The staff was frazzled and didn't care. It was the small things and that big things that that failed at.

No morning newspaper at my door, internet connection in the room was broken for my whole stay.

One last thing, my mom read the onine reviews and told be before we checked in that people saw cockroaches here.

I saw a cockroach the size of a Buick walking down the hallway. Hyatt should be ashamed to have their brand on this hotel.

Nice post.

When I started my blog, there was no need to limit it to a certain category.

It was just a blog about 'what we talked about at lunch.'

Same goes for my videoblog. I'm comfortable having my blog be about everything and anything.

I have recently started cross posting a show, Vlog Soup, to it's own blog becuase people ahve asled for an easy way to find all those episodes, but I'll still blog about everything and anything.

Make sure you sign up first, if you are going to sign up, because if you create a video and then choose to sign up, you loose what you were just working on.

In my case, I lost my first test, but I like the second test better since it has a theme of Gary Vaynerchuk.

From Qik:

The problem with the N95 is that the US version can't switch between 3G and GSM without crashing the phone if there is a load on the DSP (like there is when Qik is running), even if Qik is using WiFi.

The solution is to lock it into 3G mode (which should be fine anywhere in AT&T's 3G coverage cities). In rural areas it can be locked into GSM instead.

Go into tools -> settings -> phone -> network -> network mode -- set to "UMTS" (not "dual mode"). This locks it into 3G mode and prevents it from crashing while streaming when the phone gets the bright idea to switch networks (which it should not be doing so much to begin with). You can also lock it into GSM mode if you're someplace outside AT&T's 3G map.

Great story. I just backed up with SuperDuper! too. It restored my failed MacBook Pro to a replacement MacBook Pro with Migration Assistant when the new replacement system was Leopard. All I had to do was add in a few serial #'s.

Can you explain the part where you say you can't boot? I backup to an external Firewire dirve. Shouldn't it be bootable?

But what if you jut backup to a drive that is not partitioned? Isn't the the whole drive a partition?

Can you talk more about Image Files? What are they? I use the default settings. What kind of backup is SuperDuper! making in that case?

I also would like to hear about version control, because I was wondering if I could buy a new drive and have a second backup in case the first fails...

It's easier for me to ask here, but if you want me to take these questions over to the SuperDuper! forum I can... Maybe SuperDuper! folks will chime in here.

I'm happy for them but can they take a moment and support TypePad users by adding paging to category view.

For those of us who have been blogging for years, when you call up a category view with lots of posts, it takes a long time for ALL the posts to display.

They need to implement paging for categories where you can designate how many posts per page to display.

I've told Mena this directly.

Flickr is great in their support of Creative Commons, but they do not go far enough. Have you noticed that if you want to get HTML from one of YOUR OWN photos you can, BUT you can't get the same HTML from anyone else's photo?

Flickr needs to provide access to HTML embed code for all photos that are CC licensed AND they need to include the license info in the HTML, ex: CC BY-NC-SA, like that.

They are aware of the request, I posted it to their message board a long time ago, but they have not moved on it.

Also, the Creative Commons people are in full support of this enhancement to Flickr.

If anyone reading this has access to decision makers over at Flickr, I'd love to hear an update.

Funny how hard it is to find those that will honestly give you even 20%, but when you do find them, you hold on to them like gold.

Actually hold on to the relationship, so you can share it with others.

I've got a list of companies that I recommend without hesitation because I know how they will treat their customers. You mentioned a few.

When I watch videos, I watch people. When I deal with companies, I deal with people.

You say that you have 93 subscribers, but you don't really know that. Remember when I told you that the number that feedburner lists is the number of people who grabbed your feed that day?

When people subscribe to your feed you don't get a record of that. They don't send in their email address to you. You actually have no idea of how many subscribers you have.

93 people turned on their computer and fired up their aggregator to day and pinged your feed. Other than that, you don't really know.

Getting on Ze Frank's the show really makes the whole Podcamp experience complete. We had a room full of people share their ideas and then come together to make a video for Ze, which he ended up using on today's show.

It's just a small example of what the future of collaborative media making could be like.

What if television thought about their viewers as creative participants?

This idea of a future where we are all participants just became a lot clearer to me. We are experimenting with the future right now, and moments like this bring it into focus.

Although we can't see the future, I think we've just seen a glimpse.

If you click on the title you go to the blog entry in Grazr. they are working on the interface for videos.

This video really captures an amazing moment that I wanted to share with people. That is what video blogging is all about.

It's also exciting for what it demonstrates. If you read this morning's Boston Globe, you don't get the sense of what was happening there.

Last night on the news, you got a clip of Deval being interviewed after the speech in the middle of a package about waht both candidates were doing yesterday.

I don't want to hear what repoters said hapened, I want to see it myself. That's why I felt it was important to get this specific clip up.

Deval's blog is sadly out of date with the last entry September 25, 2006. His Brightcove video page is better, but as of this morning there is no video of yesterday's speech.

The front page is blog like but has no permalinks to link to.

Like Dave Winer says, blogging is like making dinner. We don't get paid to make dinner. I didn't get paid to shoot and post this video.

It's just something I do.

The Deval Patrick campaign is already set up to shoot and post video. I hope to see more on their site real soon.

I think I'm doing the same thing with vlogs. I watch most of them in an aggregator and only head over to the website when I want to leave a comment.

To start 2007 off, the Boston Media Makers are going to 'make a movie'

We'll be meeting on Sunday Jan 7th at Sweet Finnish in JP and make a video of Sweet Finnish. After that we are going to help pucsh Ravi's car into the new Axiom art studio at Green Street and film that too.

There's going to be lots of cameras and computers and video making...

Rob - I haven't jumped on board with John Edwards, although my 'reporting' is not objective either. I bring to my video and text posts my own feelings which I think make my posts different from MSM, who has to maintain a presentation of not being biased.

I'll admit that I like John Edwards. In my blog post I've outlined things that he might want to consider doing differently on future blogger meetings. I don't agree with him on gay marriage, but I'm also not a one issue voter. Part of the reason I went up to New Hampshire was to see my good friend Chuck Olsen and Robert Scoble. I was interested inteh back story behind the YouTube video, and I got that story on video.

I'm interested in the behind the scenes operations of events like this.

I'll tell you right now that I also like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. I hope they both decide to get into the race and I'd be happy to go shoot video when they head up to New Hampshire or visit Boston.

Right now, they supply HTML code that you can copy and paste for your own photos, but not for others.

You close with:

The solution is to make the event "ours", like David Weinberger says, and not something you put on and document for "us."

The answer that we are all giving is that we need to do more than watch, we need to be included. Dave Weinberger calls it 'ours." It's not media being broadcast at us, it's us being involved in the broadcast in some way.

In the blog world where 1% of the people create and around 9% contribute, what does that mean for the other 90%?

That answer is the flavor of the month, but I'm getting uncomfortable giving it. There's something else going on right now. It's like a new wave of creativity. I'll be interested to see where it leads...

It has a very nice interface and user experience too. When it started rendering the video, it gave me a message that said it might take a while and that I could go outside , leave whatever, and not worry since my video would be in my account and a link would be mailed to me. Very nice.

I'm passionate about Creative Commons and making sure that photos with Creative Commons licenses are used in an appropriate manner.

In your presentation you say, "All photos were found on flickr and were licensed under the Creative Commons license"

Which ones?

NC?

SA?

By your statement you are giving the impression that if it's on flicr and has a CC license, anyone can use it. That's not right.

Each photo has a specific license on it and there are many to choose from.

We've talked about this before and I had a chance to talk with
Mike Linksvsyer from Creative Commons about it when I was recently in SF.

We talked about the definition of Commercial Use. Some people think it just means that when it says Non Commercial use it means you can't resell someone's photo. I think it means you can't use it in business without getting express permission from the photographer.

I think we can all agree that it's ill defined.

I'm gathering people's perspectives on the issue...

BTW, in Mark's presentation, he puts the person's name and URL to the photo right on the presentation... and he's the guy who runs Creative Commons...

One thing you could do to allow people to visit the photos is to make the links on this post clickable.

Chris,
Creative Commons has different flavors. By doing a search for "CC licensed", you are not excluding those that prohibit commercial use.

Lan says, "I always use flickr’s advanced search and make sure I find photos that only need attribution." When you use those photos the issue of commercial use does not apply.

You have speaking engagements and post to this blog as a part of marketing yourself. To me, that's a business use.

If you flew somewhere to speak, did you expense the air and hotel as a business expense?

If you did that, then I'd guess that the presentation was a commercial use.

Great! We've made progress.

Now the next item on the agenda is getting flickr to change.

Flickr needs to provide HTML code on each photo that has a CC license on it. This HTML code should include links back to the flickr photo page, and any attribution and CC license so the user doesn't have to code it all themselves.

It would make is so much easier to adhere to attribution requirements of photo owners when blogging...

When I go to a certain size photo of mine, I am presented with the HTML to copy and paste onto a web page.

Not so for other people's pictures...

At the Podcast and New Media Expo "Julius" asked a question in one of the sessions to enable him to go up to the panel and hand each person a red envelope.

At the time I felt it took away an opportunity for someone with a 'real' question to ask it.

The Red Monday page is now 100 times better than the page that was there during the expo. That page required an email address before showing you anything.

So you know what I did after after arriving at the page?

Hi Chris,
Good job on photo credit. People are able to follow the link to flickr and comment and/or see the CC license I have on it.

One more thing that would make it perfect would be to have CC BY-NC-SA right beside my name, since the license actually requires that you put the same CC license on you photo that I have on mine.

As for David Maister's book, I recently finished it, and loved the leadership chapter too. It's a great read and a good lens for examining the presidential candidates through.

If you get together with David, maybe you can make it an open meet up where more people can come too.

Thanks for linking to that guy's photo. Flickr does not make it easy for you to do it in the manner specified by his CC license, BY.

What Flickr needs to do is to include HTML code for photos other than your own, so that it's easier to link to.

Plus, they also need to include in that code, links back to the creator AND CC License information.

It would be SO easy for them to do this. I've discussed this with the Creative Commons people, and we agree.

Now only to get Flickr to add this feature.

Happy Birthday, Chris!

I HAD to be the 4th person in a row to say that. Ha ha.

I love looking towards the future. I look at things as they are and work towards getting them to the next level.

So far this year I've been involved in some exciting projects including live mobile broadcasting. I brought Qik together with both Seesmic and Mogulus to produce some groundbreaking election coverage. That excites me.

I'm exploring the differences between all the streaming services and am writing up a post about how they all compare to each other.

I'm also looking into the convergence of personal, mobile and broadcast video.

I'll be speaking at Streaming Media East and New Media Expo this. I lo
ve speaking at conferences and getting a chance to meet so many people that I only know online, and also love the opportunity to see people I only see once or twice a year.

I also enjoy getting people together to talk about what they are doing in the media space. Boston Media Makers is going strong and I'm happy to see it spread to other cities including Phoenix, Washington, D.C., Denver, Providence, R.I. and London.

I'm interested in the future of personal content and how we'll be able to share and keep track of it all.

Carol and I enjoy producing The Carol and Steve Show. As you know it enhances the experiences we have. Recent travel episodes have been very popular and we are working on development of that into something more.

I love how you have a book at the proposal stage... Ha ha. Me too. Doesn't everybody?

I like how you have identified three projects to focus on in 2008-2009. That's a good idea.

My blog is called Off On A Tangent. It was started back in November of 2000 when I was on a consulting contract at the Boston Phoenix.

I started it to share and research the interesting things we talked about at lunch.

Over time it's turned into a blog about things I find interesting about news, pop culture and technology. I also point to things I'm involved in and media I create.

That's a long was of saying that my blog is about me. Anyone I do business with is entering into a relationship with me and my blog is a reflection of who I am.

One more thing. In the past I've used my blog as a link blog. Now those links end up on twitter, and I'm taking the time to write longer posts on the blog.

@Paul - My comment is genuine. For a while I have defined myself by the tools I use. A videoblogger puts videos on a blog.

I've always had in interest in reporting. In fact the second video I put up on my blog was a local news story.

I've done reporting for citizen journalism sites including Rocketboom and The UpTake.

Over the past few years I've imagined a future where the tools of broadcasting would become available to anyone on the street. Those tools are now here.

I recently spoke at the New England Newspaper Association conference in Boston and some of those newspapers are now broadcasting live reports from cell phones to their websites.

Now I'm exploring how viewers and listeners can have a voice.

It's more than just enabling the existing media to use new tools and technology.

What I find exciting is the prospect of having a larger conversation.

Good start on the issue of personal branding.

One thing that's a pet peeve of mine is when people use secret identities. That puts me in the position of having to look at their name and figure out who they are.

Another problem is when people read off a list of websites they have created and want you to visit them all. It's ok to have a bunch of websites, but don't make me have to write them all down.

Give me one central location where I can use as a starting point to see everything you are doing.

I've been complaining about the Boston Globe's lack of links out for years... Adam Gaffin and I had a meeting with them a few years ago to give them ideas on how to improve.

Nothing changed.

I see the Globe now has a few blogs, but they still don't allow comments on articles.

In an article about blogs, they've at least got to link out to the blogs mentioned in the article.

They even have the URL in there...

On a related note, the Globe searches the web for local video content and hosts it on their site using technology from Everyzing.

I've been talking to the Globe and Everyzing about getting a link back on that content and hear that that feature should roll out this week.

On a more positive note, the Globe has linked out to my video blog a number of times this year from the front page of Boston.com, and that has provided thousands of hits.

@Kai - You bring up a good point which also reminds me of another problem that newspapers have. When they make a mistake, the archived version of hte story s not changed, a correction is posted in another place, and hte incorrect information lives on, being searchable by Google forever....

Hey Chris,

Why are bloggers different than TV Shows?

When I used to watch Alias, you'd see them zip around a fast corner, and then zoom in and linger on a shot of the (insert name of car company brand here) . When I used to see that, I'd say "Oh man. Product placement." It's obvious and I'm sure they disclosed it in the credits at the end of the show.

But, they didn't interrupt the stream, and pop up and say, "This car furnished by " in the middle of a car chase.

I'm in a number of blogger programs. I post that information on my main site, http://stevegarfield.com, so if people are interested, they can check over there. It's kind of like my credits page.

In addition, I'll disclose the relationship in certain blog posts like this one:

"Steve’s 2007 Most Memorable New Product Launch Picks: iPhone, Nikon D40/D80 (blogger program participant), NOKIA N95 (blogger program participant),"

In that case I'm honestly recommending the product, and also want people to know that the companies had sent me evaluation products...

Other times I might write something like this:

"Thanks to Nikon for sending me D80. That's what made most of these photos possible. I love the aperture priority on it and the compact size of the 18-135mm ..."

While other times I'll post:

"The D80 has fine detail in the image with great color. ... Benefits of the iPhone / N82 over the D80, is that you are connected via the cell network or WiFi ..."

When in public, if someone asks me about a product I'm using, I'll usually say that sent me this one, and them tell them my thoughts...

Sadly my D80's evaluation period has expired and I have to send it back.

I really enjoyed the D80 and am thinking about upgrading to a higher model that is better in low light situations without a flash.

I'm still perplexed about which HD video camera to buy and haven't had a chance to evaluate any of them. ;-)

Hi Chris,

Considering the amount of money people pay consultants to design websites for them, this looks like something to seriously consider.

If he's got all the code in there, all you need to do is customize the design to the client's preference. Do you know a good Boston area designer?

For that matter, do you know a good Boston area Wordpress coder?

How about someone who knows both? That is the holy grail.

Sometimes I just want to pass off website design and support to someone I know will handle the initial install and customization, and then be there for ongoing support.

It doesn't even have to be someone local, but I'd be interested in finding out if there is someone local like this.

One thing to keep in mind when moving to a Wordpress.org site like this is that you need to handle all the upgrades and backups...

If you aren't prepared to do that http://wordpress.org is a good alternative, among others.

Just this morning I was looking around for a keyboard skin and found these guys.

They'll put a skin on almost anything AND you can upoad your own image. I like that.

I also upoaded a custom image on my Dunkin Donuts card. It's fun to use because the people in the store are almost always excited about seeig what I've done.

In addition to getting the cool image on my card, the Dunkin Donuts support people called me on the phone to make sure I was happy after having to reprint my card because of a design issue.

The G1 is a fun camera because it's really small compared to a full sized Canon or Nikon. I've also used both.

The G1's intelligent mode was fun to use. It's like a little computer person is in there helping you. "Please turn on the flash." So nice.

I added a comment on my blog post with second impresions of the HD camera with links to 4 videos, including two of Jimmy Fallon and one of me wearning the HD video scuba mask.

@chrisbrogan We didn't even get to really shoot a video together. We'll have to make plans to do it in Boston or some other city we travel to together.

Wow. I've been a loyal blogger user since day one. Although I could do all the technical work, I like how blogger is a hosted platform. I also use Typepad and like that it's hosted too. This post though is making me think about moving one of my blogs over. Maybe I'll try Wordpress 2.7 on a new blog and see how it goes, then decide if I want to migrate my blogger blog over... I suppose you'll compress it with something like H.264 and them make your content available in many different flavors so people will be able to comsume it however and where ever they'd like.

The largest files will be downloaded to my computer while I sleep by some type of aggregator which may or may not make use of a bit torrent type of protocol.

There'll be a special feed you'll have to distribute your content to third parties who will then distribute your content to me via some type of connected TV device like Akimbo, XBOX, Playstation, or computer.

Then you'll also make content available in a Flash/QT/WMV format for people who want to subscribe via RSS 2.0 or watch online.

And you'll probably want to make some cell phone / mobile device content too.

I'm sure there will be other formats too...

A couple of notes:

1. I shot this with a Nokis N93 cellphone that I've got on trial right now. The video on this is amazing.

2. I basically took all the footage and lined it up and then put in an opening, close and some music. Just the footage is enough to convey the feeling of going up in a balloon ride for the first time, but I like to package my moment showing footage.

3. I got a free ride since last year when I went the ride was closed and I put up some video of that.

4. Nothing was scripted and the owner wanted to talk about business opportunities for people. I could have cut that out, but I left it in. It's waht happened and he's a nice guy. It also gives people an idea of ways to incorporate advertising without having to actually create ads. It's user generated advertising. The future is huge for this type of thing as long as it's transparent. If it's not, I'd be questioning what is real. I dosclose everything on the blog post.

I've used Democracy player, the developers are friends of mine, but Democracy is no FireAnt. ;-)

The playlist looks nice and the feature where you can click to make it full screen is cool too.

I'd prefer it if when viewing the playlist in full screen you could also view the video in it's default size. I don't like the pixelation that occurs when videos get stretched from their original upload size.

Democracy player gives you no way to link back to the permalink of the post that the video comes from.

It needs to have a way to get back to the blog to be able to leave comments and have a conversation.

I've mentioned this to them.

The short description doesn't include live links from the blog post.

Democracy might be a nice video player, but it lacks the features of FireAnt.

Call me when it provides a link back, and a description that isn't shortened and that includes live links.

I agree too. I emailed Mike about a feature that I thought Blip.tv should have. It was about displaying a 3GP file type instead of saying 'other' on the video's display page.

He emailed me back seven minutes later saying that he had made the fix and it was live on the site.

Blip.tv is the opposite of a nameless faceless hosting service.

Real people work there AND they get back to you.

Podcast is a misnomer in the fact the you don't need a Pod to view or listen to the media.

The 'cast' part comes in when media is sent down an RSS feed.

So I usually try to differentiate between a Video Blog and a Video Podcast.

You can watch video on a videoblog and have it delivered in a video podcast.

But if we are to stop using the word podcast, head over to YouTube and listen to what the kids are calling what they do.

They are putting up and recording vlogs. Although they are not really making a new vlog each time they record a video. That would entail going somewhere like blogger or typepad and creating a new vlog with header, entries, blah blah blah.

Hi Robert,
I blogged about that Boston Globe article.

The whole article is about the Nashville bloggers and the posts they wrote, BUT the Globe doesn't link to either the bloggers or their posts.

The Globe does not even print their URL's in the paper.

I've even been at the Boston Globe in person in a meeting with them to explain why they need to link out, but they still do not do it.

I hope they start linking out to blogs in 2007.

Hi Robert,

On a technical note, you say, "You can see her in this Kyte video that I shot with my Nokia N95 (which is why the video is a bit small and blurry)."

That is not the reason that the video is "small and blurry."

When I shoot video, I use the primary camera on the N95 and choose 640x480 at 30 fps. The videos come out big and clear.

Hey Robert congratulations!

My experience up in NH covering the primary with Qik really got me excited all over again about the PARTICIPATORY aspect of this. I love that it's one of hte things you are focusing on.

I've experimented with Mogulus and hope to try some LIVE broadcasting with it. Finding the right technical solution that works is the tricky part here. I've tried a lot of the live streaming solutions at Boston Media Makers meetings and most times there have been issues that keep the stream from working. Computer issues, configuration issues, bandwith issues... I'll be experimenting more with these technologies to find something that works for me all the time.

And finally Seesmic. Although the videos are recorded, they are live. Alive with people, and timely. On New Years Eve Carol and I had dinner with the world as we watched everyone celebrate and recorded our own toast.

2008 is going to be an exciting year.

Hi Robert,
I was able to get in and test it.

To answer your points:

"1. The service doesn’t work. Says “Yahoo! Live is an experimental release. We’ve experienced heavy traffic and are taking a breather to tune things up a bit.”"

Can you give Yahoo! a break? It was on NewTeeVee, TechCrunch and Digg. The service didn't work for you when you tried it. It worked for me when I did.

There were some issues, but it's the first day. I was able to get online and get a chat going. The problems I experienced were:

- Wouldn't recognize MacBook Pro Microphone.
- Had to switch between iSight and DV Cam a few times to get the video to catch. Same with audio.
- Could only hear other video broadcasters in my tray intermittently.
- Crash the browser a few times

"2. It doesn’t work on cell phones like Qik does."

- OK, so maybe they planned to have it work online like all the other streaming services. Do you also think Ustream, Justin.tv,r BlogTV, and Stickcam. are bad because they don't support broadcasting from a cellphone? Broadcasting from a cellphone is great, but does everyone have to do it?

"3. It doesn’t record live sessions."

I chatted with them about this and it will...

When an error is made in a newspaper article and it's web counterpart, the hard copy article can never be corrected AND the electronic version NEVER is.

That's bad.

People searching the archives and/or Google will always find the original uncorrected article.

I watch both shows too and wish there was more teaching on Hell's Kitchen. Too bad they stack the deck with the less talented chefs for the sake of 'reality.'

I love Padma on Top Chef. Nice choice for a host. I think on that show we get to learn more about cooking techniques from the participants.

I love yelling "they're all actors" at the TV, when the "guests arrive for dinner."

That was a fun ride. When I started showing some people the video they told me that in addition to doing an assemble edit where you just line up the clips one after another, you can also trim the individual clips...

Hi,
The most creative thing I did when I first got the N95 was teach myself how to edit, using the N95, while on a 15 minute train ride. So I shot some video, added titles and credits and a music track. Then when I got to WiFi, I uploaded to the web.

I like how Steve Capus says, "There is nothing like being there, up close and personal, when it comes to covering a presidential election."

I'd love to have the campaigns realize this too and start putting out more personal videos from the candidates. of course I care about where they stand on the issues, but I'd also like to learn more about them as people.

What are they really like when they aren't giving soundbites? How do they manage? are they micro managers or delegators.

i'm really interested to see what comes of this...
