btw, I noticed your creative use of nofollow here. Like you nofollow the huge "anybeal" go home link on every page and the subscribe buttons etc.

any rhyme or reason?

The CTO from feedburner stopped by and said the trick won't provide accurate results.

I'm a bit confused on their reasoning, but the point is there is more debate to be had on this in the original thread, and the fact that the the CTO commented makes me think we are on to something

I added a creative commons license to the code so feel free to modify it or come up with your own creations. Or a completely new take on it too.

Seems a long shot that one of the cases is having too many links pointing to a site where millions of other links point at.

By your interpretation any blog that has adsense on it would also be penalized since all the pages point at googlesyndication.com

thanks a million for the mention andy.

if you are playing with the api's I found the alexa one to be extremely easy to use, REST and all.

the only downside is they charge some goofy small amount per query, something like .000015 cents.

As for only 60, I will hopefully be adding more each day.

And to the note about the three current metrics, I do plan on upgrading the ranking eventually, I thought I would put something out there and get some initial feedback first (it has been great) and build from there, plus I might like to add my own, like user voting etc. but I went for K.I.S.S and just showed it off as is.

I agree that startups need marketing. However I think it would be a poor investment to spend it on a product unseen with no contact info and a one page website based on hype.

By the same logic startups should spend their money on a Nigerien email scam just because it sounds good ;)

I just visited the site and it's gone already, and no contact info anywhere. Shady.

The problem is not with your site but with the people that are leaving the comments, they are probably blacklisted from Askimet.

There is no easy solution, just keep reporting them as good in Askiment and it should get fixed eventually.

Until then though, every comment on a wordpress blog running askimet, they will probably never see their comment again.

I was blacklisted by askimet a few months ago, it's better now but took a few lost comments and emailing bloggers where I commented to fix it.

Askimet is stupid ;-)

With hype products you want to rank TODAY for the term, hence go write at squidoo.

And the difference between pinging weblogs.com and bumpzee is, bumpzee takes your post title and potentially adds many comments (or content) behind that title, they aren't simply an aggregator only.

I only dispelled the widget myth, the alexa does count elewhere.

I've got firefox search status installed which I believe acts like an alexa bar (it shoes alexa rank when surfing), so that might be helping along with other things.

I think banner blindness happened because visitors no longer found value in the banners. Therefore they ignored them.

I don't see people not finding value in video anytime soon (people actually watch infomercials).

I'm staring at something that looks like a TV set as I type this (my monitor ;-) Video on the web seems very natural to me.

I agree with your opinions on some of the current email marketing methods.

In fact I was rather jaded with email marketing and never considered it because of many of those reasons.

I realized there were "non shady" ways to manage a list after joining aweber and that go me interested in getting into the space.

There will be some hucksters pushing the latest cons as long as it works and then they will move onto the next thing eventually.

My main turn on is the "permission marketing" angle with email marketing. Instead of paying a nickel to get one sale, I can now pay a nickel for the permission to market somebody over and over, because they WANT me to. I want my emails to be valuable of course.

For instance woot.com. Tons of people give their permission to woot.com to market to them via rss and email every day and people LOVE it. Boy would it be nice to be woot ;-)

I quit 8-3-06, I'm coming up on a year shortly.

I found that even after my 100 + 150 day anniversary, I could handle the cravings but they would still come occasionally and strong.

I also started taking a brisk walk for thirty minutes every single day, 7 days a week. I've only missed 2 days in almost a year.

vlad - bummer on your camera

I took the plunge a few weeks ago and purchased a digital video camera

panasonic SDR-H18

it isn't perfect (it takes a second or two to turn on and the color has trouble adjusting a few times) but has been working fine for me and the quality is the same as my digital camera (except now I can record longer than 7 minutes, lol).

remember for 4-500 dollars you are just getting an entry level hard drive camera so don't expect hollywood quality

cool, i think what I'm going to do is just create a few banners that lead to my subscribe page (for email and rss). then anybody that lands on the subscribe page is considered a goal winner ;-)

I can track this super easy with openads. Of course it won't tell me if they actually pull the trigger and subscribe, but neither will the jump page solution.

There is no paranoia, stories of wordpress installs getting hacked are a dime a dozen.

On the other hand, there are very few stories of something like typepad being hacked.

This post was about security that's why i was mentioning the typepad alternative.

I've never had two stats packages track clicks or impressions the same. Who is right? We'll probably never know

I do find that openads tracks on the high side of things though, as if they aren't filtering many of the bots that are making some clicks.

sure they filter them out, but none do it the same. It's also extremely hard to determine what is a human and what is a bot sometimes.

I'm sure everybody tries their best but it's like any statistics package for anything, what's a bot and what's a human?

you can even put sitemeter AND analytics on your site and watch the differences.

heck I get different impression counts from google analytics and google adsense.

Yeah people don't understand the free adserver thing and that is ok.

I've got some cool widgets planned like the social widget I mentioned above that add value to a blogs site and also help bloggers make money.

The next widget like that will be an ad supported blogroll that helps you manage your blogroll and also helps you make money ;)

Even if they don't "get it" now I think they will eventually.

I'm headed to affiliate summit in less than 24 hours so I'm packing etc. but when I get back I will make the prices visible.

However, you will still need to log in to purchase the ad. Without logging in there is no way to track your ad purchases, give you feedback, etc.

Also, it's much MORE work to set up an ad through email than it is to just login, pay, and upload ;)

it only ranks blogs relative to the other blogs in the database. Certainly there are blogs with better stats that would appear higher in the list that exist.

Just email vlad with the ones and he'll add them to the list ;)

As for the algorithm, it's based on google pagerank, technorati, and alexa rank. Nothing is hand calculated.

Each one is weighted differently, and that changes regularly, however there is no secret about what the factors in ranking are, they are google pr, technorati, and alexa.

It is generated from a mixture of alexa, page rank, and technorati rankings. Nothing is hand calculated.

Each factor has their own "weight' that changes often, however it is very public how each blog is ranked, according to their pr, technorati, and alexa. Both are 3 independent rankings that all blogs have.

"GeekRealtors Rank will quickly show you where on the internet to spend your advertising dollars."

That assumes the advertiser is looking for sites with the best independent stats like google pagerank, technorati, and alexa, which GeekRealtors does a better job than any existing site at aggregating all in one place.

Certainly an advertiser has other criteria, however GeekRealtors is a real good start.

About the N/A's, I am rerunning the scripts now. they usually take an hour because I don't want to ping the API's every second.

I manage over 500 blog rankings across multiple sites, there is no way I would take the time to hand calculate any ranking, it's all done based on a script that mixes up the pagerank, alexa rank, and technorati.

any other questions, fire away ;)

Remember, it's less about who ranks #65 or #55 and more about providing a central place to find real estate blogs and see their latest headlines.

Hopefully you find some like minded boggers from the list already ;)

From my experience with my own list, the number one benefit of a central place is it drives a bunch of traffic to the blogs that are on the list, regardless of where they are in rank.

It does actually crawl the sites. It uses their API's which are application programmers interface that returns the data straight from the source.

There are no 3rd party objective measures of traffic, inbound links, etc that are accurate.

Technorati is broken. Yahoo site explorer misses tons of sites.

The list takes the best there is and tries to make the best of it.

As for alexa specifically, it is an objective third party and may not meet your liking for actual raw traffic count they still are a good for seeing trends with website traffic so it does provide value.

There are no objective third party data sources are there? Do you have a solution or just pointing out you don't like things?

Vlad's list is the "best there is" at the moment ;)

That is very wrong. My most highly trafficked site has a gray bar, pr 0. Lower pr pages outrank higher pr pages all day long. do a search.

it's the "weight" of a page shown in Google Search Results:

It takes the 3 most objective measures on the web to rank the websites. If you have a better solution for ranking sites then share it ;)

I've been struggling with the disclosure thing lately indeed. I don't believe my intent is tricking anybody. I just need to get over it.

I don't mean to come across as knocking the (aff) either, I just don't feel that is disclosure for me. And yes I see the point that they could bring attention to the links (which makes me question what else could bring attention to them? little icons next them maybe, for example)

45n5 = 45+5 or 50. That site is my travels to earn 50 per day from the internet. And hopefully help or inspire others to do the same.

For the industry, I have the same question, why did people start putting (aff) next to links, and why (aff) and not (af) of ($$$) etc.

Obviously the industry had a problem with this at one point and (aff) came about. Just a guess.

I am very much looking forward to your niche.

One of the reasons I like marketing, spreading ideas, making money online, etc (to which I'm still a new student) is because it provides extreme power and freedom to those who master it, and I just think it is fun, a great mix.

The hope is that someday I'd be able to use these tools, skill, knowledge, etc to make the world a better place or at least begin changing things. Someday right?

When you pitched your idea I realized in a small way that someday could be today. Even though I wasn't spreading my particular agenda I would be enabling others with good ideas to help them change the world.

Doing a topic you love also helps you stay motivated as opposed to writing about air purifiers or mold cause some keyword tool told you to lol ;)

I did it because it's my blog and it's what I believe. That's the point of a blog.

I think wordpress.org is dangerous to suggest somebody use that isn't a techie. No hype, not twists, no turns. that's what I honestly believe.

I'm 32 ;) And having fun making really bad videos, everybody should try it ;)

The MAJORITY of the feedback i get tells me they read it because it's honest and because I give my straight opinion.
