@cecily - I agree with you 100% on everything especially too since I am African American and I use a Mac.
I also appreciate you comment on @blackweb20's blog about black people who live in one part of the country and another. I have lived in Iowa City (midwest), Atlanta (south) and New York City, Washington, DC (East Coast) and hardly anyone understands where I am coming from at times because of how I understand the different regions of how I have experienced living life there as a minority a a black and as a woman.
My issue with all of this is that if I am going to download and use this browser - will all my actions be recorded and documented as a black person using the web? What internet marketers are going to be spamming me knowing that oh - this lady is at IP address etc. and they are *black* b/c they downloaded the blackbird and I think this new [insert product here] will do wonders for them b/c they are black and I know black people buy, etc.

Wow, I had no clue people were sending spam like this! I've been on Twitter since April 2007 but I have never received a DM like that from a new follower. I am private so I screen every1 before I even allow them into my orbit. Recently, I've been denying a lot of people who don't even have any twitter conversations and all they are promoting is an RSS feed. I usually choose the RSS feeds I want to follow on but if I had to get a DM telling me to go to someone's website, I think I will scream if I am not interested.

@Corvida passed this along to me and this is interesting because I am ADDICTED to colors that make me calm and happy. I had posted a comment to Tom on myspace informing him that I was having a HEART ATTACK every time I saw a RED face get mad on my mood indicator so it would be great to see pretty colors like yours that you could be calming and produce a song!! Ooh..I am SO EXCITED.

Freedom of speech in the media especially in blog land is still in a quandary.

With the issues of content at question it makes you wonder how can a platform such as blogger, sixpart, etc. could police so many blogs every day and then what is considered objectable-content?

From my eyes as a black woman I see a lot of things I disagree with but I enjoy that I can choose not read it or not. However, I know some people have issues with my own content with is factual from the newspaper (and other credible sources) about incidents. So I do not know what is again "objectable-content?"

I am curious to know what is going to happen these next couple of years as more bloggers share and challenge what is "objectable-content?"

Thank you for sharing because I like Songza too. However, I see some PROBLEMS with the website considering the issues with copyrights on the internet.

The only reason why I mention this is because some artists such as Prince are in a copyright dispute with music that he produced with his record company (Warner Brothers) because he does not own those master tapes for Warner Brothers does. This is part of the reason for his lawsuits that are going on all over the web.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Sorry about your issues with Webkinz. My neighbor bought a few for her niece but informed me that she was on a wait list for 2 months to even receive her product. I had no idea that there was this obstacle too.

On this topic I have so many views but the one main thing is that in life you should have an elevator speech. I mentor a few young people and I try to give them language and ideas of professions they may be interested. I dislike it when a prospective mentee says **i duh know what I want out of life**.

I met a young lady on twitter who TRULY impressed me because she loves the internet/social media and technology and she has shared with me many of the things that she wants to do but now she has to FINISH college school. I told her to keep this passion and to network as much as she can. So, I have hope! [Her website SheGeeks.net]

Thank you AGAIN for making it clear as to why technologically there is NOTHING innovative about this browser. I appreciate the clarity. I can't use it because I use a MAC but i am not inclined to use it because I make my OWN black filters in how I use a search engine. I appreciate the help that a browser such as blackbird could bring but it does not fit my tastes from everything I am reading about how it functions. And, I cannot test it out because I have a MAC. b) exchanging web links of anything that comes to mind
c) creating friendships/business partnerships online
d) u cannot explain twitter but you have to jump into it to understand it

To me, social media is about being sincere in sharing and getting the word out about someone or something that may be beneficial to your business. If people fail to share, then I don't find them to be very helpful in social circle. It is a tricky situation on the web in sharing but in the end it usually works out where individuals who are sincere will share and give you due credit for the information. Informative post. Wow! I am speechless! I wonder though if the other residence halls will be renovated to be green?!

I haven't been down to Spelman (c/o'96 here) since 2006 and I remember seeing a lot of construction work but not to sure what was going on. When I graduated, the Cosby Center had been constructed and was opened to the public in 1996 so I am really observing so much change for the 21st century.

Thank you for the update on this RSS feed issue. I was speaking with @koa on twitter awhile ago sharing how it is easier to read an RSS feed than to receive so much email that will be deleted and not read. RSS feeds are much easier to manage in deciding whether to read the content or not.

That is a good point that you raise about Kanye West.

I know for me that I was introduced to a particular artist on twitter but after a year of following them and reading some tweets that made me *smh* (thanks Angela for teaching me what that means) I realized that people are people. However, some people need to be careful of the image that they are trying to portray if they want potential fans.

@Lynne d Johnson : I am agreement with everything you have said and even with @Markus. I did not use #blck because I did not like how some people used it without the black context and that is why I was so opposed to it.

But, if it is used correctly then maybe I will reconsider it. My main issue as with others though is that some of us did not want to be targeted by internet marketers for some assume that as a black consumer I may be interested in that product.

I am on the net not as a seller of anything but as an activist in sharing who I am and my interests. I am exchanging thought and only trying to share respect for one another. That is why when I saw the #blck discussion out of context I was becoming infuriated because I felt it was going to be abused.

Therefore, I am thankful for @negrophile and @blackweb20 who always use the black discussion in context and they don't have to use a tag. I know following their twitter streams that I am enlightened!

However like @markus said it helped him find some other cool people who are even McCain supporters. I love knowing stories like this.

Thank you for the explanation from everyone. It has helped me make sense of how some feel too.

When I first received an email address in 1996, it was through AOL and I was a regular reader of Black Voices section of AOL. I used to also use their chat room. However, after about 9 months my interest was not there anymore but I always give Black Voices credit for my introduction to black culture on the web.

Thank you for the lesson on how BlackVoices.com is able to get their audience.

There is an entity on myspace - www.myblackamerica.com - who is an avid reader and sharer of the information of BlacKVoices.com blogs and that is where I am able to sometimes know what is going on in Black America from them for they have a loyal following on myspace.

@tnvboy that is an excellent point. I know I have quite a few people who respond to me through twitter then another half that does not. I have no idea if they benefit from me either for these individuals never engage in conversation nor share links. I do check their blogs but we are not in social media for the same reasons (I think). Since I cannot *physically* read them then I have to read their blogs to see if they benefit from anything I say? Since I am not gaining from them that is when I decide it is best to un-follow? I appreciate you pointing this out.

Since February 2007 I have been using last.fm primarily to listen to my own extensive music collection then recently I realized that you can "streamline" an album to the last.fm system and listen to it in its entirety. That is the glue as to why last.fm works best for me because if I want the album, I can either buy it from www.iTunes.com, www.emusic.com or wherever my heart desires.

I have discovered a lot of artists this way and I even have made some wonderful friendships with people all over the world through last.fm who have introduced to new artists.

Radio feature wise I prefer www.pandora.com only because it is easier to use. I enjoy reading the notes on the attributes of the albums, songs and artists that I am listening too. I am just an average joe and not a musician but I now understand how some artists "listen" and "feel" music.

Great perspectives. However, I wonder minority wise where do some of us fit?

Blackplanet.com was a start but then some left after a year or two (1999)Net Noir was there in the beginning but I have not kept up (1997).That is the same with Black Voices (1997).

Everyone I met minority wise when I first became acquainted with the online world has not found a community for themselves anymore. Some tend to create own networks from schools before even face book was thought about.

I worked with BET's (when it was known as msbet.com) first website in 1997 so it was interesting to see how that entire community has evolved. I do not follow it like I used to but I know a lot of teenagers enjoy the site for their gossip.

Very proud of your accomplishments for I have read a lot about you since you first befriended me on twitter. But I had actually never listened to your "singing" music until last night. You know I still had that hip hop flair in my head and was kind of like ohhhhhh. But, when I realized you could sing, my impression of you changed immediately and I am glad I still kept my hope for you.

I was pretty much impressed with your vibe, musical arrangements. You have many assets in reaching the American market such as your international/worldwide flair for all the diversity here.

I will continue to explore your SINGING music but I must say I felt like I was on an island listening to Legendary. In fact, I was dreaming of what does Ghana look like? South America? As I listened to your music knowing you LOVE Brazil!

What impresses me the most about you though is your business mind and all you are doing in merchandising and selling items that will bring you income.

In one of your tweets you said that in the future people may not buy music which is very true but I do have to say that if artists could get some type of compensation from the internet radio stations that play your music when they do then that may be a beginning? I do not know.

Consumers still want to make that connect with the artists but now you just have to be more creative online on how you can make money from that fan base. I may have some deas. I'll talk with ya.

Well that is beyond insanity to me why they do this BUTTTTTTTT on last.fm, you can get around this with the coding.

So if I want to do a music blog, I usually do it on last.fm to embed videos but those companies that do not allow it then I find other sources for the video. Or I just say click on the link if I want to continue to highlight that artist.

My last employer provided a blackberry for me but after my experience with one, I do not want to be that accessible by my boss again. It drove me nuts. So, I prefer getting connected when I am at my desk or at home. I am the type now that I just do not want to be bothered but sometimes I wonder what online life is when I am mobile. I am too scared to try because I may be too hooked! ;)

If it were not for Twitter, Chris, I would not have found you.

Further, since I work from home, this post does not really apply to me but it helps me in speaking to others in the work force about the importance of some social networks.

If companies do not want these social networks being used in their work place then the company manual/policy should outline no social networks and include each one by name so that the employees will know where they should not be.

However, some companies do not realize the value of twitter or technology forums which can help these companies be productive.

Fortunately today on Twitter, HRBlock is following me and they called me out on their twitter feed because they knew I was trying to be in touch with them.

I had another incident today where a friend was sharing some a copyright infringement with use of her photos on flickr and I wish I had someone who was into copyright law to back me up on what I was saying to her.

Forgot to add something. There is a situation going on a another social/music website that I use called http://www.last.fm. An entire musical label (Funkcartel) from the UK was banned for no proof of harrassment that a user Ana Gori had complained about.

In reading the Terms of last.fm, they can ban you from their website without just cause. Their words exactly from their Terms and Policy : you agree that Last.fm including any appointed personnel may at any time without notice:

* move or suspend the Website in whole or in part; and

* disclose any material or content contained on the Website if it considers it necessary to enforce these Terms and Conditions.

These terms can be read into many ways and I feel there can be other ways to resolve situations like this.

If I had the time, I could analyze the case from the terms of use as a user/artist and label but I do not have the time or resources.

But if anyone else gets into a similar situation just know to go through these stepss. So you know your rights. I just wonder if there are any precedent cases like this on last.fm or from other music websites.

Thank you for highlighting our conversation, and you are very on point in sharing how twitter ad other venues may be used for communication. However, the main point is that both parties have to be open, receptive and patient with one another.

There is so much untapped talent in the world and I commend you for sharing Zoe Keating with me. I immediately bought her live album from emusic.com and have enjoyed it. I plan to explore more of her music.

Great question. For me, when I first received my first email address and signed up for the net then that is when my social media experiment started.

As a student in my last year of college, I was on a few list serves sharing information on a variety of issues when it came to finding out about graduate school. I was in touch with a few people for I met up with Tayari Jones who shared with me her experiences in Iowa and her opinion of going to school there. http://www.tayarijones.com/ [this is Tayari Jones] We were introduced by Dr. Donna Akiba Harper who was our professor at Spelman college (www.spelman.edu). Dr. Harper always sent me information via email about law schools and students from my college who were in law school so I valued her opinion. [There was not a social networking community now of lawyers who were a graduate of my school but now we have one via the NING community]

I took a year off before starting law school but during that time I used the internet a lot to find out more about law school and students who went to the schools I was interested in. Further, I was hired by MSBET.com (BET's first web site) to work with their first web site in 1996 and my first assignment was to help create a social community to help spread the word about the website.

Now with how technology has changed I am so happy for twitter and many other social communities because those layers I had to go through back then were extremely time consuming. However, now I am more focused on what I need to achieve on a daily basis. Sad thing though is trying to explain social media to many people who do not get it. Now, that is frustrating!

I admire you sharing your thoughts here for I have a lot of projects on my plate now and like you, I have my priorities on those projects.

Pleasing others is what some of us hope to achieve but we have to think in the long run, how will it benefit you? Will it take time away from your overall agenda? Will that person give you the time that you also invest in them?

Thank you for sharing. I used to work with the Hotel Association in Washington, DC (http://www.hawdc.com) and I participated in helping to negotiate the labor union contracts between the Hotel Managers and the employees. It was a very stressful time for all us although I had to be neutral about everything. The same issues were wanted by the workers - better wages, health benefits, etc.

Every 2 years I believe the contracts for the employees in Washington, DC are being questioned and then there are protests like this.

I hope that when conventions for Podcamp or anything in social media are going to be a state convention center that you realize that you may be in the middle of experiencing protests every so often!

I do not mind following established news sources that uses robots to share news such as the New York Times and The Washington Post. HOWEVER, I do not care for robots that do not share information that is not substantive. There was a twitter account selling Lionel Trains and other toys all run by robots. I was not interested and I was so tired of them that I blocked them from being my friend.

I have about 30 messages on my voice mail that I have neglected to listen to because I do not have the time and some people refuse to be brief with voice mail message even when I have indicated in my greeting *please leave a BRIEF message.* But like Jeff Sass said earlier I usually do not answer the phone unless it is an important telephone call.

I've used Jott but I have not been very successful in incorporating it into my daily routine which I will reconsider now!

I agree with you on so many points. With twitter I try to keep up with a select few who I have made an effort to get to know. I cannot know and be everything to everybody. It is IMPOSSIBLE.

I have a twitter checklist too but now it is getting a little hard for me now where people in other social networks want to add me on twitter and I have to remember from what network do I know them from.

I do twitter a lot and maybe that is why people want to add me because they know I am always on twitter which in reality is a real drawback.

I have halted my blogging for awhile to have a better strategy to approach all the requests that I am getting to blog or just read someone's blog post.

I am like you overwhelmed and this is when you have to set limits on what works best for you.

Further, I refuse to use my real professional contacts for people who I do not know at all. I have had some very bizarre requests from some asking me to help them to connect to others and I do not know who they are at all.

Wow..many people this week have had more gripes with this Auto DM response. I agree with everything. Tired of it.

I do unfollow anyone (I don't have the urge. I unfollow and BLOCK so they cannot re-add me again!) who sends me an automatic DM especially if they call themselves an expert on twitter and they have only 50 or less tweets.

Yesterday, I received an automatic DM from a new follower who had about 3000 tweets and the were sharing their free PDF book on how to use twitter for beginners.

If this individual actually took notice of my updates, I have over 20,000. Hmm..I am not saying I am an expert on twitter but I am not a beginner on twitter. That rubbed me the wrong way : /

This is one of the many reasons why I left twitter because of how some companies market themselves and it is to me an unauthentic voice. I even was unfollowing people who were using twit later (I think that is the name) where it was a robotic response. It drove me insane.

I prefer being an observer and reading blogs now instead of using twitter as much as I did.

Like you, I have only read his first book, "Dreams of My Father" and I was impressed with him because of his willingness and him actually working with the people.
What surprises me though is how people keep on saying that they like him but that tney do not think he is going to win. If we actually take action on our dreams then the man will win so let's continue to be positive!

Horrible but again this is why I don't put my name and password from twitter into every application that is out there. In fact, I only use name and password for twitter. I don't use all these applications that everyone swears by. I prefer twitter on my computer and not even on my phone. I don't even use tweetdeck. Not to sure if I want that distraction despite the fact that I received a Blackberry for Christmas. And, thank you @julie for your observation. Red flag.

[I hate to truly highlight myself] I studied a lot of poetry in college for I was an English major and the tips offered here for reading poetry are so true. I found my writing voice in poetry studying a lot of Langston Hughes and Nikki Giovanni. Great poetry to read out loud and perform too! Great blog!

Have you tried Utterz.com?! I was introduced to it 2 weeks ago. All you do is use your phone or cell phone and call in the audio. Sound quality is not bad I guess depending on your connection.

Excellent resource especially with what I found recently. Are you familiar with this website - www.futureofmusic.org ?

I appreciate him highlighting to know your CRAFT as a musician. It is IMPERATIVE in my book for a musician to know an instrument and even HOW to read music. You need to know the musical language in some circles to just even be heard seriously by others. I think the real musicians will shine more in the future than those who rely on technology to produce the sounds for them. You need to know though how to use technology to your advantage and to be conversant in web 2.0.

Building a social community through your appreciators is the key. If you do not have appreciators who sincerely want to help promote you and see you grow, FORGET IT!

The performer and the appreciator need to be able to work together in appreciating and acknowledging one another. I see this is the key of Amel Larrieux's success with her website (http://www.blisslife.com) and her fan base. This goes the same for Prince but when he let his website go (http://www.3121.com), his fan sites replaced the NPG online but still his fans are dedicated. It is interesting to witness the vibe from those artists who are independent and those who are on major labels and how their fan bases talk and discuss their artists.

I've been active in a few music web communities and it is really a family like environment in a lot of these music circles for the music is very personal and dear to us. Many of us try to blog and share positive insights on the musicians to help get a positive vibe in the air and to remind people it's all about the music!

I adore CD's too! I just don't feel as though I own or have a personal stake in the music unless I can touch it, have a booklet w/ lyrics and background information so therefore, I want a CD. I honestly never cared for iTunes and the more I find out about their questionable business structure, I am not to sure if I could support it. I prefer my CD in my hands and not virtually!

You know we all have had challenges like this to some extent. My parents were told certain things that they could not accomplish but they were successful and even myself. I always think of this teacher who told my mother I should not attend a particular summer camp because it was for the *smart kids* and I did not fit in that category, I was in the 1st grade at this time and THANK GOD my mother took me out of that school.

I don't understand why teachers those who are supposed to be our role models can be so hurtful like this. now, our children in schools everywhere when they hear these stories now they can turn to Barack Obama's story.

When we are challenged at any stage of our life I think some of us take the challenge and take it to the next level.

Also, Lil Wayne's name in almost any social circle is going to make it hot. Though I am not that familiar with Lil Wayne's music I am very curious to stream the song to see what all the fuss is about. The curiosity now has taken over me because I honestly don't know his music!! But, see the buzz helps.

I wonder if Lil Wayne did a track with Yo Yo Ma (the cellist) if that would be downloaded as much? Have you seen this?

Well at least you have to purchase a ticket to see them perform and then you get the music. LIVE music definitely the future of the music industry. If you can't perform live, I think your career is either one over or you won't have one.

I wonder if other artists are going to catch on to this concept.

Michael Jackson is going on tour supposedly this summer. I wonder if he would do this to his music but then he holds a tight reign over the Beatles catalog until his death. Did you see where he wrote in his will that when he dies that the music will be given to Paul McCartney. Question there is who will outlive whom!

Thank you for your insight because I honestly wondered how someone at a corporate company felt about what is going on. I've been seeing this trend for a long time too re: social network.

I worked with BET's first website back in 1997 in helping to try to build a web community but we had NO IDEA & NO CLUE of what we were doing. After we received our first TOS (terms of service) violation for hmm spamming email addresses, that is when I realized oh, we are doing something WRONG. But we had no clue of how to community build then. I had to leave only b/c I was realizing I needed a little more education to tackle online world so I went to law school?! [why?! I did that to myself I don't know?! Not practicing at the current moment]

Since I have been more active in social media for the past 2 years, I have created my own communities (they are kinda disconnected but I have them) too that is something that I cherish tremendously! However, I cannot get everyone to join the social community tools I use each day [re: twitter/myspace and sometimes plurk, rejaw, etc.]! It can be a real test of my patience trying to get someone to join twitter or even set up a blog but they still find me online somehow and want to talk!

I appreciate reading what you do on twitter and thank you so much for sharing! 8) I am excited to be a part of your community too!
