Now if you apply either $1, $4, or $40+ per user per year, that $80MM a year is kinda chump change.
Nice problem to have though.
Ask Adobe or Emmy for total number of Web users. They're within 5-10% of having every user on the web world-wide. They had been public about the numbers in the past.

in welcome to the web, NYT on John's Blog
Actually, NYTimes has a bunch of blogs these days off of WordPress. They spoke at a WordPress conference and was impressed.
I thought they were doing some stuff with SilverLight too. They're pretty far ahead.
What's surprising to me is that they're doing video.

How much is each? And then you have to purchase a separate Windows Vista license right? I guess I could look this up. Install straightforward for both, correct?

Don't do it. If you get one you can probably expense it though right? It's checking out the competition...

I did this a long time ago. http://www.rebron.org/toolbox/email.html
I still kind of follow it.
Good luck. There's a lot of information to parse through on a daily basis.

Great post. You're going to hate me but my question is what's happening with Thunderbird? A decision for it is taking quite long and really want to see what a full team around it could do.

No sighing allowed. You guys are kicking ass. In terms of L10n, keep the products craigslist/google simple. Changes to web site/products are hard to do globally without a strong simple foundation.
Anyway 60 minutes did a segment on Kurdistan recently: http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=2491526n

in kid privacy on John's Blog
I was waiting to see when you were going to bring this up. There isn't a good technical solution here though VOX, flickr, and others try. On my blog, I'm the only guinea pig and I don't blog about family and also usually don't post up pictures of other people in it besides me.
Normal people just email pics of their kids to their friends and family and give updates. Also, the whole kids pictures on Christmas cards is the way to go.
Blogging about your son's childhood probably should be kept private/require log-in. I can understand why parents would want to blog about their kids though. It sucks that people have to think twice about doing it.

in Starbucks, with Chinese Characteristics on John's Blog
Sorry to keep commenting, I just don't get to see you everyday :)
I had this conversation with friends of mine who just became parents. Middle class used to be (?) where one parent could work and the other could stay at home and watch the kids. That's no longer the case for middle-class, certainly in the Bay Area/Valley. If both parents *have to* work, that's not middle class.
Keep going on China if you have more stuff to write. Very interesting. (and ugh, Starbucks).

in moving to wordpress on John's Blog
Gallery would be my choice if it was easier to use. Makes much more sense to store photos on your own server. Flickr and the FAlbum plug-in is my set-up. Easy to upload photos and I'm not sure about integrating into your blog. May have spent way too much time figuring it out.
Anyway you go it's going to be aggravating.
Picasa is interesting and so is SmugMug. Write up what you decide if you end up evaluating the other ones.
I migrated from MovableType a while back. They're good about letting you import/export your data.

Condensing what Anil said: Vox is pretty good and worth checking out. It's a non-geeky version of Live Journal.

Oh. There's migration support for WordPress I believe. Well, I had a MovableType blog and was able to migrate over to WordPress pretty easily. I'm guessing they have one for TypePad.

We'll you've probably already gotten this advice, but WordPress (maybe WordPress.com) might do the trick. It's definitely the most flexible, but not free. WordPress could be a lot of work. I've heard some good things about Vox but haven't played around with it that much.

I hate the web. You just made me spend two minutes looking at a damn bug on Google Maps - resizing, hybrid mode, commenting on this thing. You can't go from Coup in Thailand to Giant Bug in Germany. :)

Forgot. You're right, there really isn't much to be excited about. The cars I mentioned are pretty cool but hybrid cars as mainstream cars are just around the corner.

If not a Lotus, I'd go w/ the Audi A3. Lois Lane drives an Audi A3.
The Lexus IS 350 would make you the cool dad on the block and it's really fast.
BMW 3 or 5 Wagon. Super practical.
Or just spring for the Honda Odyssey which you're destined for anyways. :)
