in 18 WordPress Plugins for RSS Management and Tweaks on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I use WordPress as a CMS and rather than turning off feeds, I've got a plugin that adds pages (feeds just include posts by default) to the feed. Feeds are not just for those with feed readers. They can be used to shared content with many sites.

in Google My Tracks for Android on Ali Kuru's personal weblog
It's funny. The thing that you think is the "best part" I actually consider to be the worst part :-) I'd want to know that I can access a map of my area without a cell signal or data connection. It'd be cool if you could download an area beforehand and truly not need a separate GPS.

I'm off to check out MyMotion which you mentioned!

Ali Kuru Caching maps would be great if it's your first time and you don't know anything about the area, I agree. That's exactly what MyMotion does, which also allows user to transfer his tracks to/from Google Earth, according to the developer.

Hope it works for you, I'm still searching for something useful.

in 2008/05/20/techmeme-search-makes-me-remember-technorati-for-a-split-second/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Technorati has certainly failed to keep up with expectations, but I'd say it's broader focus is still an important feature that we shouldn't give up in place of a system that effectively eliminates non-mainstream sites.

in Scaling Yourself on Chris Brogan
Great post! However, I'd argue that much of this is less about scaling and more about focusing on the important tasks. If you were truly scaling, you'd be accomplishing more in less time. Sort of like what's described in the 4 Hour Workweek book.

in 10 Reasons You Should be Using Thunderbird on Marketing Pilgrim
Thunderbird is close to being good and I'm eagerly awaiting the day I can make the switch, but the main alternative on Windows (Outlook) is still superior. While the "intelligent" spam filtering should work in theory, after training it against thousands of e-mails, it still failed pretty miserably. I tried giving Cloudmark's plug-in a try (which works very well with Outlook), but I failed to get it to work properly.

in Month of Madness: Will I Make $1,300 in One Month with Paid Reviews? on Vlad Zabblotskyy - A politically Incorrect Blogger
Check out John Chow's site. He makes more than $1300 per month on reviews. I think at last count he hit $4500. I don't think he's an average blogger, but still proof that it can be done.

in How Much Time Does It Take To Blog? on Instigator Blog
When people tell me they don't have the time to blog I respond with a question about how much time they spend watching TV. I then suggest they cut that in half and spend that time reading something. That's what I do and often a blog post pours out almost instantly after reading a magazine article or a few pages of a book.

in Carbon Dioxide and Global Warming on The Marketing Technology Blog
Doug,

You've got to give us more time to reply when over an hour's investment is needed! I'm still only 55 minutes in to the video.

I unfortunately can't say with certainty which side is right on this one. I simply don't know enough to see through inaccuracies, intentional or otherwise. However, I do think I'd be ready to accept that human-caused global warming is bunk, but that doesn't mean I don't want to protect wildlife and keep the world "clean".

I am glad that we have people making counter arguments though. They don't all get the same airplay, but at least they're available. Thanks for mentioning this one.

Douglas Karr Marios,

I don't disagree. I guess the truth is that we don't know what we don't know about the climate. We do know; however, some of these gases aren't healthy for humans - so we should always strive to help one another and get them cleaned up!

Thanks!

in Intuit TurboTax Makes the IRS Look Good on The Marketing Technology Blog
I've been a fan of TurboTax (desktop edition) for several years now too. How does the online edition handle multiple tax returns? That is, do you have to pay per tax return?

Remember a couple of years ago when Intuit used product activation to stop multiple installations from one CD? Sounded good on paper, but it annoyed all the families (couples) that expected to be able to do their taxes from their respective computers. Hopefully the online version is flexible in this regard.

Douglas Karr Hi Mario,

To tell you the truth, I'm not sure! I only (thankfully) had one to worry about. I don't think I'll switch back to the desktop after using the online! No installs, and all my data is accessible online from here on! (You are able to save all your tax forms via PDF to have a record).

Regards,
Doug

in Removing Snap Link Preview Pop-up on Marketing Pilgrim
They don't do anything for me. Half the time they pop up while I'm moving my mouse and not actually looking to click on the link. Some good link text surrounded by good context is more than enough information. A thumbnail doesn't add value.

in Is it Safe to Upgrade to Firefox 2? on Marketing Pilgrim
You could always get the portable version of FireFox 2. Doesn't need to be installed, won't mess up your existing install of FireFox, and can be easily deleted if you have problems with it.

I've been using version 2 for a while now. No problems with Flash, plugins, or crashes.

in Is Technorati a Scraper? on Plagiarism Today
I've taken to adding the nofollow attribute to my blog's technorati tags. I figure if they are going to put the attribute on links back to my site, then I might as well too. No need to "boost" their site without a return favor.

Two things I still need to work out are:

1) Will the nofollow attribute apply to Technorati's spider?

2) If I don't actually get much traffic from Technorati then is there any point in having the tags at all on my site?

Lastly, if you happen to be using the Simpletags Wordpress plugin for this site, it's a quick change to add the nofollow code in.

in 5. When All Else Fails - PlagiarismToday on Plagiarism Today
One other aspect to using shame to deal with plagiarists is that you can go after their egos with a little SEO. What I mean is that if you determine the plagiarist is an identifiable person or company, you can improve the effectiveness of your shaming attempts by making sure you use SEO to get your page describing the plagiarism to the top of search engine results. Eventually, the person or someone who knows the person will come across your page because search engine use is so common. That's the tactic I'm trying now.

in 1. How to Find Plagiarism - PlagiarismToday on Plagiarism Today
First off, great info! I recently found a couple of other sites that had plagiarized my content. I used Google to find these sites by picking out a phrase from a page that I figured sounded unique enough not to return too many results.

Copyscape is a service that can help with people that are willing to pay for the service. They use Google's database apparently.
