in Old School Friday: It’s My Birthday…Year! on Conversations With Marva
Three excellent choices. My favorite part of "Just My Imagination" is when the music builds and then Paul Williams sings the line, "Every night on my knees I pray".
"Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology") was a staple in my house back in the day. The entire "What's Going On" album is one that is solid from beginning to end.
It's hard to top Gladys Knight when it comes to conveying heartbreak in a song. My favorite line in "If I Were Your Woman" is, "You're like a diamond
and she treats you like glass".

I can see that you and I could have a really cool movie marathon. Whenever I think of "American History X", I think of the scene with Edward Norton, the black guy, and the curb... shudder!
For the Postman Always Rings Twice, is that the orig. with John Garfield and Lana Turner or the remake with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange? I've seen the excellent original version, but not the remake.

Last week still seems a bit surreal, but less so as we get closer to January 20th. By the way, props to the artist(s) responsible for that picture from Essence.com.

I was doing more than my share of pacing leading up to Obama's victory. I caught the Keith Olbermann piece the other night and thought it was right on point. It reminded me of an email I received that posed some "what if" questions about this year's President race. If you haven't seen it and would like to, let me know and I will forward it to you.

I know I'm late as hell, but you know how it goes.
#9: I thought that was Nicole Scherzinger of The Pussycat Dolls in that Nike ad with Lebron James. I know they will airing the hell out of that throughout the season.
#8: Slapping is too good for that fool!
#7: I wonder if Kwame is putting on a brave face for the public or if he's really that arrogant and clueless.
#6: That first dog has chills... and they are multiplying!
#5: My niece Pjazzy posted about this disgrace to his race this past summer. It would be interesting to know if he has lost chruch members due to his anti-Obama sentiments.
#3: That candid shot is beautiful!
#1: I am currently reading "Dreams From My Father". I purchased it last week after reading some anti-Obama posts that took quotes from it out of context in an effort to portray the President-Elect as a racist. I'll bet those anti-Obama bloggers hate the fact that their smear led somebody to buy his book.

Excellent selections! I almost chose "Fight the Power" myself. I like the disclaimer you added about being respectful of other OSFers regardless of their views. I'm going to add it to mine.

Like Pjazzy and Shae-Shae said, Club Nouveau are members of the two-hit wonder club. "Why You Treat Me So Bad" is a forgotten gem from the 80s though.

I'm so glad you chose the Elton John/Mary J. Blige version of "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues". I have that album (One Night Only), but haven't listened to it in awhile. When I saw that it was one of your selections, I took my CD with me so that I can listen to it at work.

I didn't realize that Beyonce' and Jay-Z's marriage was a secret. When I saw links to stories about her coming clean about their relationship, I was puzzled. I seem to remember reading somewhere that they had jumped the broom.
Good points on #4. By the way, did you get a load of James T. Harris (the black conservative radio talk show host who begged McCain to go after Obama)?

Even if we were allowed to choose 10 of our favorite Prince songs, it still would have been hard to narrow down the list. That's how bad the boy is. Excellent choices on your part and a good way to start Friday.

10. I've never given John Mayer much thought, but I liked that song you posted.
9. The old dude may want to rethink his strategy unless he wants the Obama camp to bring up the circumstances surrounding him leaving his first wife.
8. There is no way the judicial system is letting O.J. slip through its fingers again.
7. Warren earns major props from me for his DWTS stint
5. Curtis Conway is one lucky man!
2. I love a nice, round ass on a woman.

I am really digging your 10Spot feature!
10. Even though I knew Paul Newman was gravely ill, the news of his death still shook me a bit. I did a post about him as well. By the way, Liz Taylor was arguably at her hottest in "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof".
9. I caught most of the debate last night. Afterwards, I was watching ABC, CNN, and the Fox News Channel to see what their analysts had to say. Of course, FNC ran with the fact that Obama said he agreed with McCain on several occasions. I wished that he didn't say it as much. Still, I don't think there was a clear cut winner.
8. This is an SNL skit just waiting to be made. Katie Couric had a "lady you don't know what the hell you're talking about" look on her face as Palin stumbled through her answer.
7. Great photo! Of course the conservative bloggers who say the Obama marriage is in trouble would disagree.
6. Hopefully there will be some You Tube clips of Chris Rock's HBO special. I was lucky enough to see him live a few years ago. My stomach muscles got a good workout that night.
5. Props to you for doing what was needed for the cause even though it's not your thing.
4. Every list that VH-1 comes out with is jacked up. You can look at their lists of the 100 Greatest Child Stars or 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders and quickly figure out that they don't have a clue.

Excellent post.
9. Your Chester the Molester reference made me laugh. I can't believe R. said that. Like Shelley "The Machine" Levene said in "Glengarry Glen Ross", "If you can't think on your feet, keep your mouth shut."
4. Hell yes I have wanted to haul off and smack someone.
I guess you don't find Cedric too "entertaining", lol.
If I could, I'd watch black and white dramas/mysteries from the 30s, 40s, and 50s all weekend.
As for pizza toppings, I am a meat and cheese man.
1. I couldn't agree with you more. I just read a story where a white supremacist group distributed anti-Obama flyers in NJ. Although most of the racist incidents won't be this blatant, it'll still be a lot of ugliness bubbling to the top.

Heart is on the list of acts that I wanna see live one of these days. Nancy Wilson can still do those kicks and spins when she's playing her guitar.
Maybe it's just me, but Xscape seems to get overlooked in discussions about female R&B groups of the 90s. Good choice.

Thanks for writing a post about MJ and focusing on what's really important... the music. For some people, all they wanna focus on is Mike's personal life and some of the odd things he's done.
Because I was so busy last week, MJ's birthday snuck up on me and I didn't get around to writing a 50th b-day post. However, I did write one for his 49th last year. Here is the link if you wanna check it out.

I came this close to choosing a Tony! Toni! Tone! song. Your song choice is a good one! The album it came from (The Revival) had some jams on it. I wish I had made the effort to check Tony! Toni! Tone! and the other acts out on the New Jack Reunion Tour.

One of the best parts of adding 90s music to my radio show is that I get the chance to play artists like Maxwell! Did you hear that Maxwell is scheduled to release a trilogy of albums (Black Summers' Night) over the next 3 years? Black should be coming out sometime this year, with Summers' due in 2009, and Night set to drop in 2010. You can hear a snippet of a track from the album "Black" (Pretty Wings) on his MySpace page:

in Old School Friday: Social/Political Songs on Conversations With Marva
Excellent song choice and clip find! "You Haven't Done Nothin" is unfortunately one of those songs that will remain timeless because there will always be a politician who doesn't have our best interests at heart.
It was cool to see Gladys and the Pips, Marvin Hamlisch, and Phoebe Snow getting down in the audience. Even though it was probably rehearsed, I am still impressed with Andy Williams' ability to "hit the post" (radio jargon for talking over the intro of a song and finishing right before the vocals start).
