in Is it time that there was a patching team? on Bladewatch
While many would love to do this, I think it's unfortunate that most IT shops won't. And it won't be out of a lack of budget either, it'll be out of a lack of understanding, motivation and time from Management required to drive something so proactive.

Maybe I'm being cynical, but instead you see IT departments getting yelled at, then yelling at their respective vendors.

To the Managers out there - BE PROACTIVE

in IT spending to fall? on Bladewatch
Of course spending will be down in that vertical - they're going broke! Another analyst trying to make a name for themselves... if anything, IT spending has become even more focused as companies, after shredding IT dept's apart for years and following the dot com crash, now realise how much value they get out of their IT teams...

in Government isn’t that good at IT you know.. on Bladewatch
Unfouranetly, anything remotely involving Goverment departments these days tends to result in a politically charged project that veers off to the left of its intended target 9 out of 10 times...

in Vista me up one might say - Part 2 on Bladewatch
Well first off I have to say, Welcome to Vista! :D

We've been testing Vista out for some time on our laptops and while it has been a bumpy ride, there are some nice things:

The good points I like:

* Suspend to RAM (Suspend as opposed to Hibernate) is much, much easier and quicker
* EFI boot support - great for my Macbook Pro for when I'm fed up with OS X
* Windows Search - makes searching for applications in your start menu, let alone documents, much easier
* Add/Remove Programs (or Programs and Features as its now known) seems to update better
* Performance Monitor - gold! About time!

What I don't like:
* Windows Search - takes some getting used to and isn't as robust as it used to be, also can be a pain when attempting to search in a directory (as windows search is integrated into every windows explorer menu)
* Sidebar - useless on laptops

Also, is it me or does Vista appear to cache items in memory at every opportunity?

in Boot Camp works with Vista on Bladewatch
Boot Camp, even while Apple wouldn't admit it, worked fine with Vista in v1.1 (I now run Vista full time on this macbook pro until I can get a larger hard drive to put OSX back on, or wait for OSX 10.5)

in Vista makes me emotional on Bladewatch
What I see might be similar - when you copy/delete/move, there's a slight lag of 1-3 seconds before it performs the actual operation. This can occur regardless of what's happening on the box.

I've also seen quite a bit of degradation in copying files to/from Samba shares as well (as opposed to a Windows File Server, which admittedly run much quicker under Vista now, or so I think.)

in Which HP/Compaq servers have ILO? on Bladewatch
Thanks Martin! Very handy to keep in mind which ones are ILO equipped, especially when you're out at a new customer's site and don't know what's in place yet :)
