in Thesis Framework, 24 hours later on Mathew Packer
Rock on! Glad you're liking it. I hate it when people try to get into Thesis and think it sucks because it does things differently to previous themes. Good that you were flexible enough not to have that problem!

Look forward to seeing what you do with it.

matpacker I spent a little bit of time reading various threads on the Thesis Forum yesterday and found a few people bitching and moaning about how static and strict Thesis is, how 'every' Thesis website looks the same, etc....bah that's bollocks.

Yeh I've seen quite a few that are very obviously Thesis, but there's quite a few that would take a very very trained eye to tell they were Thesis.

What I've found so far is that you should really learn what hooks are and where they are, and you should stick to original design guides, ie. you can do pretty well anything you like, sketch it up on a notepad, design it up in Photoshop, then start writing the CSS and tweak tweak tweak! At least that is the way I work..

I've got a bunch of sketches that I'm working through at the moment, got some ideas that I'm exploring, and have a couple of cracker ideas that I think I will put out to the Thesis community.

in Facebook Vanity URL’s for Everyone! on Mathew Packer
Clever! and I guess in a way it would work for almost anything... not that I can think of another good use for it at this moment. :-P

New blog design since last time I was here too. Nice one!

matpacker You know I thought the exact same thing, but as I worked my way through the social networks I belong to I discovered that it is pretty well only facebook who are restrictive on the vanity url.. Guess they'll eventually release them to the general populous, till then this is an easy work around I think.

Wish there was some way to add some SEO or keywords to it.....hrmmm

in Gmail Tasks On The Desktop on Quiddle
Thanks for this! I'd never seen Fluid before. Very cool.

Looks like the mobile version of Tasks doesn't have a link to the related email like it does in Gmail :( Did you find that?

The Quiddler's picture
The Quiddler You're welcome!

I've yet to see the 'related email' link, but I think it'll show up some day--Google recently updated the app, so it displays links to the mobile versions of Gmail and Calendar, so here's hoping!

in 5 Hilarious Christian Comedian Videos on Matt Flies - Blog
HA! I liked Michael Junior. John Gray was great too and the rest were pretty good. Kind of a shame that Mark Lowry perpetuates a very poor argument for the existence of God, but his delivery was right on. ;-)

Matt Langford Yeah, I actually think the Lowry video is the weakest of those I posted, but any Christian Comedian collection has to include him! There were better ones to choose from, but the video quality wasn't so great in the 80s/90s!

All in all, reasonably requests I reckon.

I have a footer tutorial that might help you utilise that space. ;)

Nifty! I haven't really started using the alert and note classes yet, but I'll keep this in mind if I do.
Nicely done. :)

in Time to set some goals on Mathew Packer
Hey, sounds like we both had a good year for blogging. I didn't make any goals for my blog, but I got similar results to you regarding hits and subs. My visits also went up again recently thanks to the growing Thesis community.

So you say "more content", how do you feel about the quality of your content? I'm not saying that I think it was bad, I didn't have time to read even my favourite blogs for the second half of 2008. Just from my own blogging perspective and having looked over the last year of my posts, I think they took a step up in quality and usefulness. I'm pretty happy with that.

Happy New Year! Best of luck.

I've been at PR4 for a couple of years now and stayed that way. S'ok I guess. :)

in Are Premium WordPress Plugins/Themes Unethical? on OMNINOGGIN
Thanks for your reply Thaya.

Matt Mullenweg uses one rule of thumb to determine if something is a derivative work. The rule is, “If you take WordPress away, will the plugin / theme work?” In most cases they will not. That’s why it’s a WordPress plugin / theme.

I think this is a poorly conceived rule of thumb. Most websites wouldn't run without Apache and/or PHP running on their server; applications wouldn't run without computer operating systems. As far as I know that doesn't usually determine their license.
Even if the end answer is still that themes should be GPL, I'd like a better reason than this. :)

Matt is a stand up guy, but he has laid forth the guidelines for which he expects theme authors or plugin authors to follow in order to garner the support of not only himself but the wordpress project through the corresponding repositories.

Did he do that before this week and before your podcast (haven't listened yet, hope to tonight)? Until recently I had never heard of non-open themes being against the license. I'd heard some words against them, but thought it was purely opinion that it was against the open-ness of the WP community. Having read the license, it definitely is not clear what constitutes a derived work. It would make it a lot easier if there was an added paragraph that said something to the effect of "We do [or do not] consider themes and plugins that hook into WordPress functions to be derived works."

Hopefully I'll get an answer to that in your interview. :)

Any derivative works will be forced to be GPL compliant, so copycats cannot just copy the code and sell it for personal profits.

This is a contradiction. It is completely within the GPL to sell redistributed, unmodified copies of software and it is against the GPL to prevent someone from doing so. I think you probably covered this in your update at the bottom, thanks for the link to the podcast will definitely listen.

Confusion arouse from people not understanding GPL, or from people trying to create loop-holes/made-up-gray-areas for personal gains.

Mmm, partly, but to me the confusion is not at all what the GPL stipulates, but what constitutes a derivative work. If you're not adding your plugin/theme to the package and distributing WordPress with it or distributing a modified core, I'm still not 100% convinced that it counts as derivative. Maybe Matt's statements in the podcast will change my mind.

in Colour Palette decisions on Mathew Packer
Yeah, a touch of red with the second could work. I really like the blue and grey in the second one, so that could be good.

I like the third. I agree with Neil that the red is a little harsh, but for me it doesn't have a medical feel without it. Perhaps the red just be used very sparingly? For hover links and a small logo or something?

in Thunder bolt and lightning, very very frightning on Mathew Packer
Yup, sounds like a good place to start. It's probably what many of my shots turned out to be, approximately. Wasn't sure though and didn't want to miss the storm! Next time I'll know ;)

I was glad to get one shot though. For a while I thought the only way to catch lightning was with a light trigger.

Very nice! I was wishing I had a fisheye during the storm because I wasn't sure where the lightning was going to come from.

30s exposure makes sense too. I had mine on bulb at f/9 (I think). I got one good shot. It turns out that my remote wireless trigger doesn't do bulb :(

Anywho, all good fun, and no power outage!

in Premium WordPress themes, where for art thou? on Mathew Packer
Aw, no DIY themes?

I do like Brian Gardner's coding. He does a top job of keeping things simple. Did you know he's going GPL with a whole new range of "revolution" themes? Not sure why he just doesn't change the name since they're going to be new designs. Anywho, it's pretty exciting. I *really* like the look of the photoblog style one (only a preview at this point).

I like the Woo themes. The prices were very difficult to find though!

Good idea! Heh, lots at the Cambridge hotel. That the best place for local gigs?

I can't decide what to do with my photos. Flickr has a good community thing going on, but I quite like how I've designed my photoblog, but I also wouldn't mind having it all under WordPress... guess I'll try to figure it out when I'm on holidays!
